Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Time for an upgrade from my Hubsan X4, love the little thing but feel I want something bigger! can anyone recommend something? hoping to spend within £100 budget

Boom - new quadcopter build authorised for christmas!

Wife asked me today what I wanted and jokingly said "don't need anything - but fancy building a quadcopter" and she was like - ok fine - just buy the stuff and I'll wrap it and put in under the tree from santa!!!

So expect plently of stupid questions and lists of stuff etc.

Love that Hex Cyclone. In fact, I love it so much I've ordered one. I'll move the bits over from my FPV250 so it only cost me the frame and 2 motors and ESCs.

Yep, thats what I did. Im going to take it apart though and rebuild it.

There's a 5mm gap at the bottom that I want to make bigger so I can hide the esc's in there. The wiring is so bad at the moment. I just wanted to get it flying so I just whacked it all in there and tied it up :)

I need to mess about with the settings of the Naze as its so sensitive on the sticks. My setup isnt all that but its a bit of a beast.

I had to order from the HK international warehouse so I doubt I'll see it before Christmas. A good project for the new year though.

Not sure I'll see that before Christmas either. Apparently there is a delay and shipments aren't due until mid December now. I hope I get it before the 17th as I'm off to Poland then.

Yeah I read that. The Inspire is looking like a really nice machine. The videos that are out look really smooth and they are only 'beta' models.

Starting to look and here is initial build thoughts.

I am going to self build, potentially strap on a go pro for now and maybe in the future add a gimbal underneath (will obviously need landing gear etc for that)

No FPV to start with.

List is generally taken from some recommendations from Krisboats a few pages back.

Q450 Ghost Edition LED Night Quad-Copter Frame (KIT)

NTM Prop Drive Series 28-26 1100kv / 252w

Afro ESC 30Amp Multi-rotor Motor Speed Controller (SimonK Firmware) (UK Warehouse)

Hobbyking KK2.1.5 Multi-rotor LCD Flight Control Board With 6050MPU And Atmel 644PA (UK Warehouse)

FrSky DJT 2.4Ghz Combo Pack for JR w/ Telemetry Module & V8FR-II RX

Turnigy 9XR PRO Radio Transmitter Mode 2 (without module)

Right idiot question time now

  • So I need propellers - how do I know what size ??
  • Obviously will need a soldering iron - Solderpro70 seems to get a decent right up.
  • Batteries seem a mine field - also chargers for them?
  • General bits of wiring, heat shrink etc

Anything else obvious that i've missed?

166(3) The person in charge of a SUA must maintain direct, unaided visual contact with the aircraft sufficient to monitor its flight path in relation to other aircraft, persons, vehicles, vessels and structures for the purpose of avoiding collisions.

Doesn't that bit ban FPV goggles, in the same way the FAA did in the US?

Pretty much that really.

And it will carry on until somebody gets seriously injured by someone flying FPV, or some other multi-rotor tragedy. Then things will change again, and not for the better.

The problem is that the technology and popularity of multicopters is changing and increasing faster than the CAA can make regulations to control it.
To be honest, I foresee a time when the CAA ban them entirely unless flown by a licensed pilot.
