Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

What iron are you using? The looks like when you solder with an iron that's not up to the job, or you use crappy solder.

Got a solder kit from the range and 17gn think 40 tin 60 lead or something

They seem to be OK, not moving anywhere, just thought they would make it a bit more less messy and annoying, does this mean I'm going to have to resolder?

When heated the solder went to a shiney silver, most of the positive wires went on OK, then set and cooled, found for some reason the negative wires dispite the solder heating OK, wouldn't sit properly but eventually got them soldered

Did you flux? I use a green Brillo pad to clean the pad of oxersiaztion, then fluxed and tinned the pad.

Yep, from a clean pad I used flux, then I pretinned the pad so it had a nice silver blob, pretinned the wire

Then heated up the pad, then wire and together , some were harder than others!

If I ever wanted to resolder what could I use to clean all the crap off the board? I'm sure its OK, I have tested each solder joint for durability

What's this stuff to secure and stop them connection with other connections ? I'm videos they just say use electrical tape

do people still flux these days?

do you have a desolder pump?

tin the wires first. drop a blob of solder on the board then while hot introduce the 2. remove the heat and let it set.

Pretty much what I was doing, yep I have a desolder pump and using a 30w soldering iron

Not sure what I should do about them, leave as is or clean the board with something and do it all again, potentially with the same result

Do people clean the board after soldering?

Going to get another soldering iron and solder.

Can anyone reccomend a cheap but will the job right soldering iron slash kit? And also the reccomended solder to use for this?

I dont want to be spending lot

May have a look on maplins as there is one by me, although if they are on the bay cheaper i will get from there but dont want to run in to this issue again

The soldering iron im using is the 48W LCD Soldering Station from Maplin. I think it was 39.99.

300oC has been fine for the ESCs, but for the large gauge battery wires, i cranked it up to 400-450oC to get the solder to flow, particularly when soldering on the XT60s. Just make sure you dont hold it on the board for ages or you might damage it.

I dont have a lot of spare time at the moment, so just managed to solder a couple more ESCs on tonight, now looks as below (big pictures);

I've been having a gander at this. Seems pretty cheap but don't know how effective it will be. http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/pro-iroda-solder-pro-70-gas-soldering-iron-n95ap It was £18 a few days ago. Don't know if it will go back down or not.

Id expect to be able to pick them up cheaper on the bay as it saus 34 now. Im already paying enoigh for this hobby as it is

I will keep a look out tomorrow for gas solder. Im wanting more than the 40w i got at the moment then

The wires out of the motor. They are erm... fly-speck gauge.

Won't be a lot of amps going down them, should be ok, surely?

Nice solid fix, came with the screen fixing bolt.

Does that fix under the antenna mount as well as on the metal bar? I can't see how it would not just rotate round otherwise? Looks like a good solution though.

On the subject of soldering.....

I use one of these for soldering pins on boards, esc's, joining wires etc. I like the fine tip.

I had a cheap gas one that I used for the PDB and XT60 connectors as it had a slightly chunkier tip. Sadly, the tip went and it seems you cant buy replacements so it just get used as a blowtorch now for heatshrink shrinking duties!

I suspect this will be purchased at the end of the month for my future soldering needs.

I'd love a proper Weller station but a bit pricey for the amount I'd use it.

That kit from amazon is a bit too much for what I want to pay really, but looks good.

The first link you posted, looks good but only 15w, probably not enough for what I need.

I was looking at this, I will only be using it the odd few times, im not going to be soldering much

Just don't fly it into a girl's hair. It's like an automatic dreadlock machine.

Haha, the landlord nearly flew it into a stacked pile of glasses behind the bar - could have ended badly! :D

Still getting my head around sorting out the drift. Shimming with pieces of paper works but it's annoying having to do that absolutely everywhere because you rarely have a completely level surface...

Let us know how you get on with it, especially interested if the iron cable is silicone. I already have the 50W Maplin solder station and while it's served me well and has done everything I've asked of it, the tips aren't all that great, the tip retaining collar is always coming loose and the iron cable is so stiff I'm always fighting it.
