Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

This weekend is the first free weekend I've had for months so I was looking forward to getting my first FPV flights on. But my compitent observer is buggering off so I can't :(

If you can literally get out to the middle of nowhere (no buildings/people) then you could still have a play low and close. Not that I'm suggesting you should, of course.

Saying that, even right out of the way my spotter mate saved my quadcopter from being savaged by a random dog that came out of nowhere. :D

Also, out of interest, does anyone here fly a Phantom 2 or similar with a Zenmuse H4-3D gimbal?

Just looked at the H4-3D - they STILL have that crap connector on the side!?

Also don't understand why they don't flip the whole design around to put the lens in the centre.

Yeah, if you get somewhere remote enough you can safely fly without an observer if you use common sense. I've never really flown with an observer apart from when the person I'm flying with has landed and taken off their goggles to change a battery or fettle.

Also I'm guessing your VTx is over 25mW? why worry about breaking other rules if you're already breaking one ;)

Really don't get the point of the H4-3D as from what I can tell it has no additional benefits over the H3-3D and yet a number of places I've seen with stock are asking £300 odd for one!!!

Also that's a very good point about the lens not being centered with the current design!

The field I fly in is popular with dog walkers so I'd rather not risk it. Plus, my GF pointed out that someone could pinch all my stuff while I'm sat there with goggles on :p.

I need to fiddle around with the settings as I've applied new firmware to the KK and added a lot of weight with the FPV kit, so I'll do that LOS on my own, and then possibly do a quick test of FPV if its quiet enough.

Its a shame my nearest good field is miles away now I've moved :(. I don't suppose anyone knows good spots near Leatherhead?

I presumed from their description that only the H4-3D was capable of carrying a Hero4? In which case that's the point :p

I've been using my Hero 4 black in an H3-3D for a few months without issue although I know some people took to grinding back a tiny bit of the gimbal surface near the menu button on the side as it was pressing the button when not wanted.

I guess people will just buy the H4-3D to go with their Hero 4 yeah - no point my upgrading though frankly!

Have an explore on Google maps! just look around for something that is relatively open and not farmland or forest.

This place looks interesting just down the road from you...

The trouble with Google Maps is that you can't tell who owns the land, or if its flat :p.

Good find though, I'll check it out.

This is my current favourate spot:

I've been to Headley Heath before - for some astro-photography with mates and it's National Trust land around there so I don't think you'd be too welcome :/

As you say it's hard to know who owns the land if you just look purely using satellite maps!

It's always easier to ask forgiveness than permission. ;)

Just be an considerate flyer, find a quiet space on a quiet day and if anyone does ask you to stop apologise, be friendly and leave. The NT doesn't allow flying anyway, it's not like your actions will affect other flyers, they can't double ban flying on their land.

Dartmoor NPA doesn't allow flying either but I've always done it somewhere quiet and out of the way and never had a problem.

The National Trust do allow non-powered flights. Just sayin' :) but yeah you'll be fine if you have a sprinkling of common sense.

National Trust own almost everything around me :(

They are one of our customers :p I have good contacts :D I wonder

Weather is looking good for a bit of flying this weekend, may find a wider space, have some potential good locations, have a nice one right by the coast by the river severn but it will be no good until go pro is a go go

I had an email from GoPro notifying me of an update for my Hero 4 which now allows 240fps @ 720p and 2.7k @ 60fps (was max of 50 before I think).

Might have to give that a go sometime!

Agreed though on just having some common sense when flying and you should be fine wherever you choose (within reason).

Just went out now as it was getting dark, mounted the only camera I had on a non-stabalised mount, 4pm camera only.

Took it pretty high, higher than I have been on previous ones

Checking out the footage now, if its any good I will upload

Damn, you, I need some camera upgrades :p

Next on my list is the landing skids, and start getting go pro mount etc ready, then to buy a go pro.
