Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Just went out now as it was getting dark, mounted the only camera I had on a non-stabalised mount, 4pm camera only.

Took it pretty high, higher than I have been on previous ones

Checking out the footage now, if its any good I will upload

Have a look around for the Go pro 3 - loads of good 2nd hand ones as people upgrade to the 4. the 3 is more than enough unless you want 4k:D

Really enjoying the Nano QX.
I was stunned when I put it into agility mode in the gym, flies very well almost like a CP helicopter.

Got a charged battery this morning, I was going to go to a high point overlooking a reservoir but I think I will leave that for today. Need to get on with revision so I think I will just use my normal field closeby.

EDIT: Just got back from some good flying, managed to have a mix between some low/mid flying menovours around a field and some higher altitude. I think I am hitting my limited max altitude I set in Naza (I am going for the gradual approach) - Twice again checked out the failsafe features, both returned to home next to where I set off. Happy that is pretty routine now. Landed right next to myself with some gps atti landings from high altitude.

Confidence is certainly growing

Trying to find info on if I can just set-up RSSI warnings and telemitry (Cell alerts/Altitude etc) with just the X9D and X8R, or do I need a seperate telemetry module to plus in to reciever? This is the next thing I need to get set-up really.

What's the easiest way to test if a motor is bent or unhealthy? My quads juddering and stuttering about like it does when I damage a prop, but it's not the props as I've changed them :(. They are the DYS 1806s. I think my failed flips and rolls and a run in with a flower bed have nerfed something...

Edit: Erm... lol

It's still not perfect but its much better after tightening all those screws on all motors.

RSSI telemetry is built into the X8R, while flying you can change page on your Taranis and see the signal reading in real time. (I set a switch to give verbal readout). By default the taranis will yell if RSSI is getting low or critical... and even then it plays safe by a range factor of about 1/3 I think.

If you are planning on going the FPV route maybe hold fire on all the telemetry modules you would need for battery / altitude etc... the iOSD mini you could fit would do everything you need. (voltage / height / distance / speed / ascent decent rate / direction of home location / sat number / pitch roll / flight mode)

Cheers

Eventualy it will be fpv but not sure when. I think i get the rssi warnings at the moment (telemetry recovered, lost, rf signal critical?)

So a seperate module is needed for bat, accent, decent, alt?

Ta

Looks like I am going to have to get a FrSky Battery Voltage Sensor - to send battery telemetry to TX through the RX. Seem them for £10 on hobbyking

Or would it be worth just investing in the FPV gear, will this do it all?

One thing you may also wish to consider is balancing your props ... even brand new ones can be off balance and that alone when multiplied by 4 (or in my case 6!) can make for lots of vibrations in the craft - which could have led in part to the screws coming undone on your motors like that photo suggests!

At the rate I go through them and being as cheap as they are it hardly seems worth it.

I suppose I could sit down and balance the pile of spares I have in one session and then its done.

Had a good flying session this morning, enjoyed it, quite sunny though so had a few moments where I couldnt see.

One very stupid moment, where I dont know why (so dont ask me) I thought there was a mechanism to stop this happening, but cut the motors mid flight, managed to restart the motors but it was too late. had two legs come off, and a slight fracture in one of the legs, I had a feeling I had done something to the hex thread on the arm

Screwing the legs back on, through the plate, then through the arms were ok, although one of the white arms has a cross thread in it now.

So looks like im going to have to purchase a new white arm, and the landing gear I was looking at (and possibly get a spare set of these stock white legs

Damn it

There is two modes in naza assistant, one is intelligent cut off, which means the motors will never stop until you have landed, or immediate cut out... which means you can stop mid flight on throttle down and crash :(

Go for the intelligent mode for sure, which means you can totally throttle down and it will descend and stay level without falling from sky (though that is still way to fast to land and bird will be unstable)

Best way to come down fast is to be traveling forward or backwards while descending... this stops the quad getting upset by it's own dirty air / prop wash

Thats what I thought, I have it set to intelligent, one thing though I was in failsafe mode, so not sure if this overrides it, I didnt think anything of it, as you can stick the throttle at 0 which is what I always do, and it just comes down gently and land

So yeah i think I wont be doing that again, I am the master and coming down gently. I was a bit shocked this happened, I think i just assumed it wouldnt cut. Ah well

On the plus side had some nice flying this morning, pleased with the battery performance/flight time too.

Just looking for a spare arm, and might buy them skids I was looking at on ebay (and get a spare stock white set)

yeah it's a nice day for flying... just abit cold lol (it kills flight times and my hands after 10mins)

cannot wait till summer when the lipos work as they should

Its pretty warm here, the sun is shining and its warmed up a bit, hence why I went out :)

I think I miffed some old guy out, Was flying at the top of the field, so decided to fly down the bottom, had a little bit of altitude but not a huge deal, there was a small country road just over so I crossed over the to the next field and he was looking up and pointing and staring at his partner I assume with a bemused look on his face :p

I also scared off a massive flock of seaguls in the next field. Managed to navigate round and come back on myself. Thats the furthest radius wise I have flown it.

Ah well, 1 replacement arm *official* - £3inc VAT

HotFPV landing Skids - £17 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/2716...1=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

And a spare set of stock white legs - £5 from ebay

So Im considering getting my very 1st quadcopter and Im looking for some advice on what to buy. Now I dont want something that in a few months time I will want to upgrade so it has to be pretty decent. Im also looking at something thats easily upgraded/repared by myself. Im pretty handy with a soldering iron and electronics so that shouldnt be a problem. Im also looking for something that either has a decent camera already attached or can have a camera retro fitted. I would also like the copter to have a decent range of flight. My budget is between £50/£100. Cheers

You will need to up your budget quite a lot more than what you planned for, especially if you want video recording / FPV.
