Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

JJRC also do a few.

Best bet for a quad with a camera will be the second hand market.

You could look at the H11D or something equivalent, but you're looking at £60 or so for that..... otherwise you need to go down the route of buying a cheap quad, small camera that transmits then a monitor to receiver the video.....but that'll be £100 nearly

Just google 'quadcopter with camera' and it will bring up a bunch of £30/40 quads with cameras and screens, you'll need to do some reading to see what they're like.

Wooooo, parts have arrived! I got a shed tonne of props simply to try out different brands and specs. See what works best for me and these motors.

I'll update my build log tonight with decent pictures and link. But here is some happy unboxing pics :D

This is not all the props! Just one box's worth. To me, straight away the Lum's feel the best quality, by a LONGGG shot. Also, excuse my lunch :D

Still a fair few things to arrive. But I hope to be up and flying by the end of next week.

This sounds super daft, how on earth do people tighten props up with nylon lock bolts? I can't get a decent grip on the motor bell to tighten it all up!

Just hold the bell a bit tighter. Use a rubber band if you have one for better grip.

I noticed some gem fan props I think in your picture. They are not very good.

No, they are awful, terrible build quality! I've got 3 'popular' brands so I can see for my self, glad I did.

I've taken a few snaps of test fitting and stuff, seems I'm missing 4 arm screws from the ZMR frame which is annoying.

I've only setup the arms as in screwing the motors into place (yet to loctite the screws) and stick the ESC's down with double sided 3M tape. I don't want to solder until I have my PDB which I've yet to decide on lol.

?

Hold the prop and turn the whatever it is you're using to tighten the nut :p I'd make sure that you don't need spacers on your nuts, might be the shaft on the motor is mega long or something

Just be careful with the loctite on the motors, don't want it going into the motors

I started using DYS 5040x3 and find they are very very good but nearly impossible to get. Stopped using the Dal indestructible's as they are more likely to damage the motors in a crash.

Pretty sure the screws are M4's so you can grab them at pretty much any hardware store.

The Diatone v2 PDB is the best I have used on the ZMR250 frame, Make sure its the v2 as the v1 doesn't fit so good.

Cool, thanks for the input. With props being so cheap, I really don't mind testing a few out and the same goes for motors, at £10 a pop. You can't go wrong!

As for the screws, I'm more annoyed than out of luck and out of pocket.

There is a shop called Drews in Reading, they sell every single size and shape, nut, bolt, etc etc, you name it. And the best part is you take all your loose coppers as they cost about 3 pence per item!!! Awesome place.

Props are only cheap until you start flying! If you break two or three in every crash, then it soon mounts up. And if you aren't crashing, you aren't learning!

I found the DAL unbreakable ones to be great, I use them on my acro LOS quad and they haven't caused any damage to the motors yet, touch wood. And that quad has been lawn-darted pretty damn hard. I think the flex in the props help protect them.

Question for you guys, I bought motors that are one pair CW and the other pair CCW...

Does this mean for the CCW motors, I don't have to cross the wires?

No, it just means that the thread for the pop nuts will be left hand on one set and right hand on the other set.

Yes, because you want the motors to turn opposite to their thread rotation so the nuts self tighten against the force of rotation. You will need to solder one up to test the rotation on uncrossed motors.

It's a really fun thought experiment trying to work it out in yer head btw.

If you have ESC's with blheli it doesn't matter as you can change to motor rotation in blheli suite.

If you don't have ESC's with blheli, you should probably look at flashing them, if possible. It will help massively.

I think it's all pointless to be honest. I've never lost a nut off a normal motor, and I've been flying for several years now. Nylocs don't tend to come unthreaded, that's the whole point of them.
