Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I'm loving my mavic. Had a couple of flights today and beginning to feel braver, took it up to 120m and about 400m away! Had a weird reaction flying back though tonight, it was just after sunset so still light, I was flying towards the sunset to my home position at 120m and I kept getting a warning saying mavic was braking to avoid collision. There was nothing there as it was in sight. Kept braking every couple of seconds. Can only assume the light was confusing it?

Yes, it is a known problem with the forward sensors, flying into bright sunlight. Just adjust your angle slightly and it'll be fine.

Couple from yesterday.

What photo settings do you use? I can get some really good ones but some poor ones too... im not expert when it comes to photography.

This may have been discussed, but I've not had a chance to dive through the thread properly yet, hopefully will do later.

I'm interested in just getting something pretty basic to play with, nothing fancy. Is there anything half decent for around £100(ish) with usable video (preferably live feed to a phone?)?

yeah the default aerial on the transmitter is tiny, replaced it with a 9 or 12db wifi aerial and its much better :)
I did the mod to my x5c wire mod for the trasmitter and it boosted range abit, but yeah it cuts out at height in the park and im often unsure if ill get it back, it usually sits and hovers until its batteries begin to die and then comes slowly down on dying motors or drops.

At the minute it is completely stock (auto). I've not had chance to play with anything yet due to work and staff ringing in sick :-(. I was looking forward to my first session tomorrow but I have to work again!
I've been catching 5 minutes here and there when I can after work but That's it.
I need to look for some filters I think. Going to get the polar pro ones.

incase you didnt know, aerial works best at 90degrees to drone, so if you "point" the aerial at the drone thats its weakest broadcast, and you can also extend the antenna in the drone too i think

Yeah, it confuses me as theres so many youtube videos of folks getting them hundred of meters in air if not more. Yet i can't get it 40m away from me without it bailing out the sky

you could well have a short aerial, i also use non rechargable AA's in transmitter as they are 1.5v, rechargeables are normally 1.2v at the start i think

Any other mavic owners noticed that they have a gimbal tilted horizon issue??

I haven't noticed it till today when I went out to a big field to properly fly my mavic ie take it out of beginner mode.

Anyway went up and started recording some footage. All went well and enjoyed flying the drone around. Had an audience too lol.

Anyhow when I went to look over my recorded footage I noticed the horizon was tilted to the left a bit, not a lot but enough to see it.

Been doing some reading and it seems like it is a common issue which can be solved with a gimbal calibration. But I always everytime I take my mavic out, do a gimbal calibration.

So may have to send it back to the place I bought it from and get them to have a look at it.

I get it every now and then, but it take seconds to correct so I'm not too bothered.
How do you correct it?? In flight or when on the ground??

Saw a YouTube video showing how to fix it by holding the c2 button and using the right hand wheel to correct the tilt.

Mine seems fine, only calibrated before first flight and it's been level since.
Flicked mine into sports mode for the first time earlier and practiced a bit of manoevering in the 5 minutes I had to play. Looks like I've got to wait yet another week to have a proper play with my mavic without rushing. Still, the extra wages will help recoup the cost of the mavic so swings and roundabouts lol.

Definitely unrelated to you totalling a TV with it... :o
Oh give it a rest will you, yeh I destroyed my tv with it. Ended up costing me a new tv as I didn't claim on my insurance as didn't feel it was the right thing to do.

Meh **** happens, get over it...I'm over it now.

Been doing some more reading and it seems like the wind has something to do with it. When I've taken it out before, there wasn't much wind but today when I took it out for a proper fly about in a big open field near where I live, it was pretty windy. Not windy to cause it any issues as it hovered well and wasn't drifting as much as I thought it would.

Could be that the wind causes the gimbal to go a bit wonky. Going to try again tomorrow, I've re-calibrated the gimbal and adjusted the tilt so will have a look and see if it is still tilting.

I might try sport mode tomorrow myself, the place I flew it today was absolutely brilliant. Wide open spaces and hardly any trees or obstacles.

Enjoyed my first proper flight today and taking it out of beginner mode for the first time.

Now I just got to get some filters and figure out the settings for the best video and photo.
