Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Well thought seeing as the weather had cleared up ie nice sunny and bright. I thought I'd take my mavic out for a bit of a flyabout at some flats we have close to where I live.

Wasn't that windy today but when I got to the place it was quite gusty. Anyhow took my mavic up to about 100feet and was getting messages on my phone saying high wind velocity and could see my mavic flapping about so decided to bring it closer to the ground.

After about 10mins I thought I'd give it a miss as it was just too windy. Kinda ruined the day but missus was happy to sit on the grass and we ended up spending the day enjoying the nice but windy weather.

I put the sun hood on my mavic but meh pile of rubbish as when I was panning the camera around, you could see the side of the hood.

Hoping later this week I get my taco rc filters so at least I can get some better video. At the moment, it's just looking too washed out when I view my footage on the dji editor.

Hopefully the wind will die down by next weekend so I can properly fly it about without having to worry about the winds taking it away lol.

I'm in Suffolk, and it was pretty gusty today. Probably not enough to prevent reasonable photography, but certainly enough to give some uncertainty about returning to home if the battery got low, so I didn't fly. Don't worry too much if you get wind warnings though - they're mostly on gusts. You will soon learn about what's safe when flying through different conditions, irrespective of what the app tells you. If you're worried, always try and make sure you're flying with the wind to return.

The sun hood works much better for stills than video But if you're still washed out with it on, then you need to adjust your position and understand the limitations of the camera. It simply won't work well with light washed across the side of the lens. A filter won't change that either.

You can pick a Phantom 3 advanced for around £300 these days, it's still a decent piece of kit.

Oh definitely, my. Mate has a p3 adv and it's more than adequate.

It's more because I have no money and wanted to do it on 'the cheap' to see if I could make anything decent.

Thing is nowadays it's almost always better to buy a photography drone RTF unless you want something very specific :(

Yeah, I really wouldn't bother. There is pretty much no good reason to build your own for photography if you are playing in the <£10k space or unless you need to lift something like a RED.
I fly an Inspire 1 Pro and it is way better than I am. TBH I'd probably be fine with a Mavic.
I've built my own photography platforms including an F550, an S800, and an S900. Sold them all due to the ease of deployment of the Inspire.
If I was getting in to this now I would buy a P3 Advanced or Pro on the used market.

Aye it may be something I do, for the time being I'm happy with my racers. :)

Friend said I could photo / video at his wedding..... If he wants a blur

Well i took my Mavic down to the beach in the wind today and had no issues in the blustery wind! This thing doesn't fail to amaze me. I also took her a mile away (1639m) for the first time with 3 bars of signal left on the controller. (*she was still in LOS with Cree© LED lights ;))

If you don't mind me asking where did you buy your led lights from??

If you can provide a link that would be great as I'm after a couple for my mavic.

I was thinking of buying the DJI Phantom 3 standard for £417 as it seems like a great deal compared to the current model Phantom. Is there any reason I shouldn't?

None at all. It's a great little thing that takes decent video and stills. Long flight time and it's robust if you crash.

It was good, quite enjoyed the evening but probably won't do it again if the format remains the same.

Was interesting to see the demographics of the crowd, not at all what I expected

The more I use the Mavic, the more I love it. Working late at home tonight, looked out the window and saw the sunset. 6 minutes later, I'm plugging the memory card into my iMac and editing in Lightroom. Just so accessible.

Stunning picture Abyss

Hopefully this weekend will be slightly calmer for me so I can take my mavic out. Planning to fly it without beginner mode, probably try sport mode as well.

Still waiting on my taco rc filters. Should have paid extra for next delivery lol. Got my landing gear extenders though. So at least my gimbal isn't stuck in the grass.

Just be really careful on Sports mode. You will need a wide open space, as all the flying aids are turned off. With a little bit of favourable wind it'll be flying at twice the speed under GPS mode.

Nothing to stop you getting up and taking pictures without the filters. You don't need them for stills at all - I've stopped using them as all it does is just put another layer of cheap-isa glass. I still use them for some video though, if conditions are very bright.

Yep where I'm planning to fly this weekend has huge open spaces.

Everytime I take a pic up high, the colours seem very washed out and details are lost. I've played with the settings and can't seem to get it right. Adjusted white balance and various other settings but to no avail. So not sure if it's my camera that's a bit dodgy or something else.

Maybe I'll take it out when it's not so bright and see if it's any better. I get that the camera on the mavic isn't the best. But seems like I just get terrible shots/video.

Try dialling down the exposure more - I have mine bound to the right jog dial on the front of the controller (other one works the gimbal) so it is nice and easy. Shooting into or away from the sun is pretty easy - it is when the sun is going across the lens at an acute angle that you can get the washed out look, but a lens hood soon solves that. The hood isn't so good for video though, as depending on which one you get it may well come into the camera frame if you're manoeuvring hard with the Mavic.
