Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

New motor should be arriving tomorrow. Also waiting to see if my fpv gear has been caught in customs

New main frame plate should arrive tomorrow :(

4s Check...

So thinking in getting a few 4s batteries to give a go on the 250. Just want to check I can just plug these in right?

Afro 12s ESCs are rated for 4S
Lots of people running the SunnySkys on 4S
FC is getting voltage from the ESC BEC so that is OK
Rx is getting power from the FC so that should also be OK
FPV Tx (immersionRc 200mw) is rated for 4S so that should be OK
FPV Camera is powered from the FPV Tx so that should be OK
Small LED strip is 12V but should be OK, if it blows it blows...

What about the FC voltage meter connection on the Naze will it be happy measuring a 4s battery? I assume so?

I'm not missing anything am I, I can just plug a 4S battery straight in, no BECs required?

Should be fine as long as the vtx outputs a regulated voltage to the camera and doesn't just pass it through?

Yeh looks ok, not sure on the immersion gear as I use a bec for my vtx but everything else is as you say, including the naze32 telemetry input.

That must have been a fairly hefty impact? I've broken 2 arms and both times I think it was a straight drop from about eighty feet up!

yeh, about 60 feet up, gust of wind hit it, the think twisted on its side at throttle and span out, I couldn't recover it. To be fair it didn't look bad, it obviously was and it cost me £40 posted for the new part :(

I can't be too annoyed, I have been flying it like a loon and crashing in a appropriate way given my lack of flying skills.

Just stripped the thing down and it isn't as much fun as building them I can tell you.

Ok, I'm looking to build a decent quality quad 250 sized or above.

How much am I looking plus recommendations please?

I already have radio.

Thanks.

(I fly CP helicopters so advanced isn't a problem)

What type of money are you looking to spend? You can vary from £100+ to 3 or 400.

I'm looking for advice on best bang per buck.
I am a traditional LoSer (haha!)

(I have set up flybarless helis so not a noob in the hobby)

I will listen to any advice given, thanks.

Standard OcUK recommended kit is:

250 carbon or "carbon" frame.
Simonk ESCs (Afros or similar).
DYS 1806 or similar Motors.
KK2.1.5 or Naze32 Acro control board.
1000mah to 1800mah 3S batteries.
5x3 2 blade props.

Under £200 all in should be easily doable.

Think im going to use some foam packaging to make a phone camera mount, just cut the shape of the phone as a slit in the foam, so I can slide it in, then put a little camera hole

Just for now

Word of warning if you are thinking in flying your phone ... :)

Albeit this was FPV, full pelt, mobius vs. goalpost :)

Carbon Frame - Would suggest ZMR 250 as you can buy replacement arms fairly easily and it's also cheap enough to buy a new frame should the worst happen

Motors DYS 1806 2300kv. You could probably just about scrape 4s on these too when you need moar powa!

Props Some cheapish plastic 5030 props to start (breakable/disposable) then either 5040 or 6030 HQ carbon composite ones. The latter are stronger but more brittle. I've personally never gotten on with Gemfans but some people swear by them.

Flight Controller Naze32/Flip32/Dragonfly/Mullet - all capable of running cleanflight which i would highly recommend you flash straight away. get a presoldered version unless you want to solder pins to the board, can be tricky and you will need a either a temp controlled iron or a low wattage one. If you do get a soldered one, make sure it has vertical pins as otherwise they can overhang the sides of the quad and catch props/trees/animals etc in a crash. Other options are CC3D and Taulabs but I have no experience of those.

ESC's Emax 12 or 18a BLHELI versions. This now supports oneshot pwm from the FC as well as active braking. If money no object look at eh KISS 12 & 18a ESC's as they are also great. ESC's with SimonK firmware are ok but if it it's not the correct version, it can cause sync problems with some motors.

RX Dependant on your radio but you will need 5 channels minimum

Batteries As above the nanotech 3s 35c 1500mah are around the sweet spot. 4s for more power.

Other stuff If you want to fly FPV then that will add another 2-300 onto the price for goggles or monitor/vtx/mobius/Flycam etc. If you're planning on flying LOS, I'd consider getting some LED's to help with orientation. Tiny quads are quite hard to orientate any distance away as they look the same from most angles compared to helis.

Plenty of good info in this thread.

On a build recommendation, I really like the 250 pro full carbon frames from makeitbuild it, light, great finish and so far seems bomb proof. They sell spare arms too.

They also currently have a full build kit on offer, google "250 PRO Quadcopter Pure Carbon Fibre DYS NAZE32 Combo" for £120.
