MX-5 Project log thread

I'm not sure I have the patience to build a supercharger kit up from scratch :o I'll probably just buy a kit of some description :D

My stubby aerial kit arrived in the post the other day, had that on order from MX5parts for a few months!

Another arrival in the post today from the states - DIY Megasquirt :D
A little winter project for me is to supercharge with the mini cooper S M45, I suspect you may be interested in this yourself Howard?

Im going to start building the Megasquirt PCB up this weekend :D

Thought I'd reply because I'm researching the subject of supercharging at the moment and I remembered what you said... I thought the M45 from the Mini isn't suitable because it doesn't have a bypass valve, and isn't cost effective to make work?

:)

Why's that?

I'm not looking for huge power, just a nice increase. I don't think I'll be in the position to spend further thousands on uprating everything etc once it's all installed. I like the idea of a reliable solution with the possibility of reasonably priced upgrades (pulleys, management etc) in the future. Plus I prefer the power delivery of a SC :p

I prefer linear power delivery, no question about that, problem is whilst a JRCS M45 kit made the car faster it didn't make it a shed load quicker, spend the same money on a turbo and you can have something with quite abit more power.

Just my thinking on the situation, only issues with a turbo over a supercharger is the extra install problems to overcome and you would need to watch out in the wet, boost + light rear-end makes for interesting times, it was bad enough with the M45 and smaller crank and nose pullys.

Personally i think a turbo solution (if fitted correctly) will be more reliable than the supercharger.

You have more to think about with a 1.6 and supercharging so I think most people go the turbo route with those from what I've seen. Although cheap to pick up, it seems expensive to fabricate/source the right fitting kit for the M45 mini charger.

I'd love to charge mine but that won't be any time soon, but I don't think I could live with a turbo as I have a heavy right foot and a s/charger would suit my driving style I would think. Plus the other half drives my car, so I could remove the belt if I so wished to save it/her from sudden death :D

Might be worth getting on a meet with some owners and sampling either FI setup, even just from the passenger seat. I hope I can cope with the 70 less bhp than my EP3 (although it's 200kg lighter).

I'd love to experience a charged 5, in either form. Maybe I'll look at doing so before spending money. I'm hoping a bonus this christmas will go a long way towards the JRSC kit, but who knows :p

Firestar, is that tensioner necessary on all JRSC kits (i.e. brand new ones) or just older ones?

Its nice to see a few other 5 owners on here. I am in the process of starting my MX5 journey! :-)

got it a couple of months ago (may have seen the thread) its a mk1 1.8. My plan is to FI, not sure which way, keep changing my mind! In any case I need to pay for the suspension, wheels and tyres first. once the handling is sorted I'll sort the FI.

The P5 setup does appeal, but I like the look of the Driftworks HSD coilovers.the spec per £ seems pretty high, monotube with proper pillow ball topmounts.

Wheels wise I'm looking at importing some of the 949 racing wheels! but your looking at £700 by the time they are delivered and tax paid. not sure the low weight is worth the difference over some nice rota's at just over £400. deffo want 15x7 with an arch filling offset though!

Then it will be time for some proper pads, new discs fluid and lines, then some track time in before I go FI! :-)

Unless the new kit has changed the tensioner design significantly i'd get the TDR one, few reasons:

- Better Rollers
- More Adjustment
- Quicker Belt Change
- Easier to Fit

Try going in an Mx-5 with well over 300bhp and report back, now thats fast

I want to be a little scared when I drive it.... not petrified! :-)

However I can see how people go searching for more, I thaught my short geared 125whp, 140something kg 600cc race bike was slow in the end (2 years ownership, converted to track only after 6 months of that), and I remember how I thaught about it when I got it at a standard 100whp.

So by that logic, there may be annother 300hp mx5 around in a year or two....:D

Just let me get to 200hp first

Howard,

There is a small group of us on MX5nutz doing the mini M45 install, it is fairly DIY and even technical drawings of required parts have been shared, have a read of this thread:

http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=35574

It will be a steep learning curve for me, but I have already started assembling my Megasquirt PCB :D and hope to have it all finished way before next summer.

If your interested by this and didnt mind waiting for me to finish/nearly finish my install I would gladly help you out with it
