MX-5 Project log thread

I did have a look at that thread, this may sound lazy but I really can't be faffed with reading through 30 pages of chatter. I think if I was to do it that way I'd wait until there were some definitive instructions/details :)

I looked at this to, I have all the drawings, but I have decided against the m45 because there is nowhere to go after 200bhp really. I'd like to know I 'could' go higher if I decided I wanted to. its looking like a begi turbo for me, or a mp62 moss kit.

If you have no access to the tooling required to make the parts for the nutz drawings, it going to cost money to get them made, and A LOT of time faffing aroung getting it together, then you still have to buy management. Something I'd like to do, but don't have time for

Decided to get it right the first time!

Thats not to say I wont be changing my mind again by the time I'm upto that stage! :-)

I'm doing the brakes first anyway, 1.8 carriers and disks and some Axxis Ultimate pads :)

let me know how the axxis are, not sure on them or yellowstuffs at the moment. my brakes arent bad at the mo though. 1.8 with mazda oe pads

I can understand this, but for me 200BHP is plenty, I plan to only run mine at 160-170, I dont think it is in the character of the car to make it stupid fast, it is fun having to work the engine - gears to get the most out of it!

Also, past that the upgrades etc will cost a fortune, may aswell buy a Lotus Elise or something? :p

I am/will be enjoying the journey that comes with these types of projects and thats part of the fun for me :)

I also work for an engineering company with its own machine shop ;)

This is the attitude I share too

But I don't have any engineering facilities or knowledge which doesn't help :)

I feel a bit of an outcast reading some of this thread!

I did consider some form of FI build for my car, but now I really just want to race a (in engine terms) near stock one around, spending the money on that. I also think I'll put all the charger/turbo money towards an elise. I think there will always be some kind of '5 in my life though :)

In your position I would have already done it by now! get a move on! ;)

For me it would cost, still not as much as the turbo kits I have been looking at, but close enough to not make it worth it in my eyes! with spanner work, myself, but all the parts in front of me, I should see 230-250bhp for 2kish, (just for the turbo etc... not for the suspension brakes etc it would need also..., and thats cheap, involves making my own cooler etc... Time will tell wether I start at 180ish then upgrade (£1300 ish) or jump straight in. probably the first option.

To do the mini 45 kit, knowing nothing about electronics to DIY a msq, I'd have to spend £500 on that, £200 on the charger, then get the parts fabbed and buy the other bits. There is no change from £1000 there at a bear minimum.

You should get the whole thing done for about £500 making it awsome, and I'm very jealous!!

Good luck, and it should be awsome when its finished! :-)

Atomic.. How's yours doing?! Haven't heard much about it!

Slooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I only get time to work on it at the weekend, and each time something happens that requires a tool I don't have. Latest bit of fun, I snapped a bolt putting the water pump back on, so I've got to drill that out and try again.. as well as get some more gaskets :(

Once the water pump is back on, got new timing belt, idler/tensioners to go on (may well while I'm here). And then fire it up and hope that it doesn't make the same awful noise it was making last time. If it does... well I don't want to think about that yet :P

What about the body?

OK so I'm pretty much decided that I'm going to go down much the same route as Pete_Diffey  Except with the Emanage Blue instead. Sounds like it could be a good project, even if I am going to be pretty much relying on the forums etc for info.. Greater sense of accomplishment :)

Arrggghhh why did I click on this thread, I have a nice bonus coming my way, and I was meant to save it all, stuff in this thread is making me have all the wrong thoughts:p

Did the oil on mine, with mobile 1 0-40, for a few days it was quite clattery (tappets) but now its smooth as anything, Ive also done the turret oil and thats made quite a difference. This car just keeps on surprising me with how much of a well balanced car it is.

As an aside, any of you lot in the Midlands? I'd like to go in a few other MX5's to see how my std one compares (and what needs doing to it lol!).

I'm in Surrey with some well set up suspension :p It's not that far :p

I need to do the various oils in mine too. Can I have some of your bonus please? I need forced induction
