MX-5 Project log thread

why are you doing this to me!

I have gone from m45, to m62, to begi turbo, to fm turbo, to diy turbo, and now I'm back at mini charger!

I'm not sure where I will end up, but I know one thing for sure.....

mx5's are awesome! :-)

So you have had everything going then?

Why not try n/a for a bit?

I'm just getting the wheels and suspension sorted. think I have setled on 15x7 et10 drag dr20's, and the HSD coilovers.

once they are on and working, and I have done the brake lines etc.... I'll think about FI.

honestly being a very healthy mk1 1.8 with exhaust and decat, especially in this cold weather, its no slouch. But FI still needs to happen! :-)

When I was test driving, it was definetly quicker than the other 3 I drove. wouldn't surprise me if it was fiddled with in japan before making it here or something...

Want to do a couple of track days na first before I go FI also.

Best get one booked! :-)

Brakes

Now that I have a few more ponies I thought it wise to make sure the brakes are up to scratch. The stock 1.6 ones weren't much cop!

I also decided to upgrade to 1.8 disks and pads at the same time. The calipers are the same, all you need is the caliper carriers, and some bigger disks and appropriate pads.

It's a very simple job (well, it ought to be.. more below :p ) so I won't bore you with detailed pics of the work but have a few pics anyway

You'll need these

And of course some

and maybe some

So I started work, got the fronts done nicely, then started work on the back and oh bugger..

It seems you need these for the rear in addition to the other bits, so off I drove on Tuesday to MX5parts and bought some

I could now crack on! Or.. I could, if it wasn't raining like a bugger. So today I finished them. Bit of a faff to get the rear pistons wound in with the little hex screw and trying to persuade the piston back in, but I got it just about far enough, adjusted it etc so the handbrake works without the pads binding, and there you have it.. Job's a good'un

They look a lot less 'lost' in the wheels, I'm sure you'll agree :D

Took it for a test run, enjoyed the whine of the supercharger after a week or so of not driving it, and immediately the brakes bite a LOT better. Bedding them in of course so no hard braking to a stop for 100 miles or so, so they should improve :)

Definitely a recommended upgrade for anyone with an early 1.6 with an appetite for more stopping power :)

I Think that i need an MX-5 in my life at some point, they seem like so much fun.

I have one question though. Why is it that you are using a 1.6 and not a 1.8 to mess with? Surely mods would be more fruitful on a larger capacity.

Why not? There isn't a great deal of difference between them in standard form, they both take to forced induction well. Just things like brakes and chassis bracing are inferior in the early 1.6s which I've upgraded :)

Oh and the diff and clutch.. I'm hoping they won't explode until I'm ready to change them however :D

So not much is inferior apart from the engine, chassis, brakes and drivetrain?

Looking good Howard! 'charger looks like it's a nice fitting kit with the pipe runs.

Brakes look good aswell. What's the difference in size between the old/new discs.

My rears were a complete **** to do, I couldnt get the pistons wound in on the drivers side, and I ended up winding the screw out too far and couldnt get it to go back, luckily the old man isnt as retarted as me when it comes to cars and he managed to sort it, he also cleaned the pistons up for me as they are prone to rusting if the seals get torn.

Disco Boy, one thing to note on the 1.6's is that, after 1993 or so, it was a crippled engine, so after that the 1.8 is the best one to go for.

Want to do the brakes and a wheel hub (bearing gone) on mine, but I know I'll eff it up! I take it the old G-Clamp or winder won't work on the rear pistons then?

Oh and AHEM you with that bloody charger :p

I had a bit of bother with the rears, the hex key would wind the piston back up to about 2mm from flush, so most of the way, but not *quite* enough - ended up removing the shims from the pads as I read quite a few other people did to get clearance and liberally applying copper grease, but the brakes and handbrake work and don't bind or anything so I think there's life in the old calipers left yet :D

The hex gear/scew is supposed to come out btw woohoo - they're replacable. It should just pop back in. Mine came out a couple of times.

Dup, no you mustn't use a G Clamp, you'll break something. On the fronts, yes. But not te rears :)

My problem was I couldnt get it back in and get it to wind again.Grrrr.

That was my 2nd ham fisted episode with the car, I did snap a stud when I did the rear ARB. Its been so long since I actually tinkered with cars I'd forgotten how much force not to use:p
