MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Got my first MX5 yesterday, need a new sig now!

Not taken any pictures of my own, here at the ones from the advert:

Its a 2008 2.0 Sport, so 6 speed manual, bilstein dampers, bose stereo, heated leather, climate, lsd etc. Done just over 25k miles with full Mazda service history, Potenza RE050As all round, generally a very well looked after car. Really like it so far, not that fast but quick enough, engine seems pretty torquey low down, makes for a very lazy drive compared to the Hondas I had. This car is also in fantastic condition, its been garaged its whole life .

The last owner has done a lot to it, seems a proper enthusiast, what he's done are generally the things I've had sorted out had I bought a standard car.

Here's the text from the advert:

MX5 True Red

Full Black leather
Climate control A/C
Electric Windows / Mirrors
Alarm / Central Locking
Steering wheel with Audio controls
Heated Seats
Piano black dash
Stainless scuff plates
upgraded Bose Speaker/Amplifier system
MX5 Carpet mats
Wind deflector

In Addition to the above I’ve added the following :

Wheels finished in Gloss Black
Bluetooth Phone connectivity module
USB / iPhone Audio playback module
Eibach suspension lowering kit (Mazda approved)
Suspension optimised by WIM in Amersham (alignment/geo setup)
Tinted glass
Reverse Parking sensors (colour coded)
Windscreen wiper intermittent wipe function
IL Motorsport Rear exhaust box (not boomy)

First little things I will do, get some black wheel nuts, paint the brake calipers, get a stubby aerial, and it may need new brakes within the next few months as well...but overall very happy with it 'as is'.

Looks lovely - I do like the MK3's :D

Got one too now, a 61-plate 2.0-litre Sport Tech Roadster Coupe.

Seems OK so far, just lacks a little verve and interest at lower speeds.

Will be getting the geo done soon, then go from there. Looking forward to spending some time with it.

That looks in great condition fella. Is that a provate plate then as that looks like a mk2.5 interior.

Wonder if you could sell it to a Volvo owner!

Hi there

That's my private plate - I couldn't sell it as it was a gift from my OH :D

The car is indeed a MK2.5 - it's the 1.8L sport with the 6 speed box. I only bought it a few weeks ago, it's had one previous owner and has full Mazda service history throughout it's 69K mileage. :)

Had a busy day, once I finished work started on a few minor modifications.

So far.

Headlamps replaced with DRL/Xenon bulbs - clear.

Front lights LED to replace bog standard defaults.

All reflectors replaced with clear/chrome edged.

High level brake light replaced with LED.

Rear light units totally replaced with LED.

Wipers replaced with stainless steel ones.

Engine painted & roll bar painted black.

Front DRL/fog lamps installed.

Gearstick replaced.

Still to go....

Front grill (I'll have to cut out some pieces due to the fog lamps).
Replace old indicator bulbs with LED yellows
Strip out seats & replace with either buckets or leather....

Good little machine to learn on, only made one stupid mistake so far (not bad considering going from knowing absolutely nothing to being able to replace all of the above in a few days :) .... (Which was locking my keys in the boot..., thankfully I was able to do a trick to get into the car without causing any damage & pop the boot! (hurray) .

Couple of pics of mine:

Very nice!.

Rear lights and high level brake light now clear?
Rear lights black, high level brake light clear.

I've ordered the clear front side-lights/indicators from Germany as MX5 parts are out of stock!.

How about some outside shots elmarko?

:D

^ ^ yeah, I'll get some pics during the day over the weekend, the back looks much nicer with brakes applied (looks like a volcano) - still working on it so it's under cover at the mo (not sealed yet).

I do like that one in the dark grey, you should definitely get one - such an amazingly fun car to drive & mod, it appeals to my old PC modding side I think....

I put a couple in the "show us your motors thread", I'll pop a couple on here (this was last week after my first attempt at a clean & polish).

Not keen on those lights at all.
Ay, I might switch out the front lights again, may convert the lot to light blue LED - not sure yet.

I'm happy with the back end & clear/chromed reflectors - but unsure about the front light combination as it is.

I'm going for the black, chrome & LED look on the Eunos (trying to see how "modern" I can make a 20 year old car look :D

Should be my last night of MX5 ownership tonight. After work tomorrow, I'm due to head straight to a Toyota dealer and part exchange it for a GT86.

It's been fun :)

More like how crap you can make it look ;)

Harsh... but I do agree.

With the exception of clear front indicator clusters and clear replacements for the headlights (Raybrigg etc.) I'm not a fan of light mods on the MX5. LEDs especially tend to look really out of place.

That said you do what you like to your motor, that's all part of the ownership experience.

Oh and MX5 ownership is not sweet here. I got up yesterday to find the back of my car covered in cat hair. As I jumped in the car I looked in the rear view mirror and it looks like a cat has totally gone to town on my rear window. It must have a hundred or more claw marks in it. I'm going to try cleaning it and using some Meguires Plast-X on it but I think its ******

Ahh, almost got the sidelight/indicators fitted tonight - will have to finish tomorrow - it seems my side-light connector was duff & the only spare one I have is a different size.

EQHcIfu.jpg

Had to get the dremel out to resize the connector slot in the new light unit, then oven bake it, open it & clean it out - reseal it - another 30mins in the over to dry, then tomorrow I'll fit them in :/.

I'm hoping the silver coloured orange glow bulbs from Halfords be bright enough with the clear sidelight unit, otherwise I'll have to wire in some off-set holders for the strong orange bulbs I have (german format)...

Then it's the grill next....

It's amazing how much you can learn by doing it all yourself mind - great fun either way.

On a side note, what bulbs would you guys recommend (orange/amber ones) with standard opposing pin format with high brightness (LED or standard) - as I've got a feeling these silver coated ones are going to suck.
