My first build in years - What do you think!

Oh nooo you guys are making it so hard!!!!

I like the idea of an ssd i really do but where do you guys put your games? Do you only have one going at a time?

A 64GB SSD like mine will hold the OS and about 5 games.

Also get a retail Blu-Ray player so it has some playback software.

Lol games are upwards of 15gb+ these days I would get 3 on there at best with the OS :(

Lets talk about good hdds I was just reading the review posted earlier about the spinpoint looks interesting anyone got advice on hdd's because i don't think i can commit on the ssd not yet maybe for my birthday :D and ill just have to drive my ferrari with a fiat engine for now

Im going to take masterplan1 build and do a slight alteration:)

So theres still a Gen3 board.

A Crucial SSD so you dont have an issues like OCZ are having.

And a 850W PSU included in the case to be able to do SLI etc with these cards.

Not bad at all this is keeping a little closer to my original spec and i like the 850w psu still in there for room to do sli in the future, so what problems are the ocz's having atm?

I just did a lot of reading and have been convinced on the need for a SSD, though storage capacity is still an issue! I don't think I want anythign smaller then 128gb ideally I could get 256gb for less then £1/GB but i know thats dreaming!

What are peoples recommendations on good SSDs in this range?

Hi reefbarman
Firstly i know you that you specifically wanted to spend under £1000 but i just wanted to show you what you can get if you went that little extra,

Price inc shipping.
Now i know theres some big changes from your original spec but trust me there all for the better and for just that little extra more it would be a massive improvement.
One thing you will notice is the 60gb ssd i put in there, read/write speeds of 555 MB/s and 495 MB/s makes this ssd incredibly fast.
And with the z68 board you can use the Smart Response Technology so you don't need a massive ssd to install all your games ect on.
Read this on Smart Response Technology.

things i would change on the above spec,
mobo - change to Gen3
SSD - Crucial M4 (cheaper)
PSU - OCZ Z Series 850w 80+ gold

mobo - why gen3 when no one knows if ivybridge is going to be worth upgrading yet as its way too early for all that and pcie 3.0 is useless without ivybridge and we have yet to see the new gpus.
ssd - the crucial m4 is only £27 cheaper but the ssd i spec'd is much much faster.
psu - The OCZ ZX Series 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply is £38 more expensive than the Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 850W V2 High Performance and they both have 70amps on the 12v rail.

No it was cheaper not better.

No it is better.

Gen3 motherboard.

Better closed loop water cooler.

2TB drive.

Bigger SSD and more reliable too.

You specced useless stuff like 1866mhz ram which has no effect on sandybridge performance and is a waste of money.

Has anyone had experience with the smart response technology? IS it any good do whats advertised on the box?

Its good for when you can only afford a 20-30GB SSD, with a 64GB SSD you don't need to do any caching as you can get everything (OS+games) on the SSD.

Using a SSD on its own is faster than combining a SSD with a harddrive.

No its much slower

Gen 3 ive already explained is useless right now.

The msi board has 8 Phase Power Design when compared to the gigabytes 12 Phase Power Design.

The hdd u spec'd may have more space but its a slow hdd running at 5400rpm

Bigger ssd what 4gb get real and no not more reliable at all so don't state such ridiculous things will you.

1866mhz ram has been proven to show slight improvements over 1600mhz in certain areas but that was not my main port of call.

The main reason why is because there on offer right now and at only £60 they offer more improvement over 1600mhz while being priced the same.

I also forgot to mention that when the pc i spec'd is built it will have a much more uniformed look to it as there is a nice black theme surrounding it,
Unlike your spec which seams to be all over the place and have no theme going on what so ever and when built will just look tacky.

I don't have time to be arguing on forums all night unlike some so if you have a quality point to make then will you get to please.
