It might be as simple as contaminated fuel. :)

I think he may have taken the engine out now...be a right shame and will annoy him loads if it is the fuel :p

But from what has been said, it does sound like it's an oil problem.

Quick update:

Just taken the head off, all the bores had oil in them. Cleaned everything and turned the engine over by hand and oil is collecting in the bores. Will update properly later.

Anyone have a spare 1.8 20V turbo engine? :D

A photo of that would have been interesting to see. Also just out of interest with the head off ie no compression does the engine spin freely by hand?

What I'd review is the choke mechanism, all this does sound like something that would happen on constant choke, lots of petrol doing in to the engine and not burning properly. Second will be that you haven't adjusted the valve opening timing properly or maybe it was taught so it went out of phase.

Well we shall soon see :)

thank you for reading my car noob post :o

Looks like the worst possible news then :(..

What do the bores look like? How much of a lip is there near the top of the bores?

Do you think you might be able to get away with just a new set of rings? Not really the way to go but it might be a cheap and cheerfull fix but how long it'll last is debatable..

You could just go the whole hog for a rebore/polish crank/new pistons/bearings etc, or as you say a new engine completely.

Keep on it Llyr..

OO havnt read this post, please ignore my last one as it MAY be that you've put the piston rings on upside down? forgot the spacer?

Engine spins fine by hand, picture of bores:

Inlet valves clean (ie no sign of oil)

We cleaned the bores out of oil, turned the engine over by hand a few times and there was quite a bit if oil back in the bores.

Pistons can be moved quite easily in all directions at the top of the bore.

On a plus note the doors are back on and looking good!!!

Keep on it Llyr..

The bores at 12 and 6 o clock postion had no lip at all, at 3 and 9 there was a very small lip I could just about feel with my finger nail.

Not keen on putting just rings in it, it's looking like a recon block at the mo.

Typically everywhere will be closed tomorrow so It's going to be Tuesday before I can do anything. Will carry on with the rest of the car tomorrow and get it ready for the MOT, once the engine is sorted it should be good to go.

Thanks for your input over the past few days, it's been really helpful :)

EDIT to add

The decent compression readings were probably due to the oil in the bores creating a decent seal around the rings.

heres an incentive.

As organiser of the RR day, Powerstation give me 1 free run.

If you get this car fixed, you can run your car for free.

get working ! :D

Hi Llyr. Ti'n iawn?

Bloody ironic that it's the one thing you didn't cobble together yourself that ends up letting you down.

Should have stuck with Jap motors :D

Seriously, tho, hope you get this fixed in time for the 'Ring and the RR day. We'll also have to organise a spin through the hills when she's legal. You'll be glad to hear that I still don't use my brakes!!! ;)

that is very true for thats what you do to check if its the ring or valves that are letting by , put a small amount of oil down the plug hole if reading rise the rings/pisyon/bore is duff

BTW i do not like the look of the colour at the top of the bore ( in the bore top 3/8 inch ) or the amount of rust that is in the water ways.

if oil comes to the top of the piston when turned by hand could it not be a cracked block ( cylinder to oil way )

keep up the good work nice to see someone who getts thier hand dirty, I make 5 inch G loco's from scratch just a blue print and a load of metal about a five year job for each , so i know what it takes to keep going on a long term project when thing do not go right

Was the engine sold as a good condition, running one??
Yep, was described as "excellent" in the advert.

I don't like the look of all the rust in the waterways either.

I think we all agree that the engine needs replacing, I'm goign to be phoning around tomorrow to try and get a recon block. I've found a few potential sources. If the engine is here by Thursday I should be ok. Today is going to be spent finishing the rest of the car, ready for an MOT.

I do wonder sometimes why I sold the scooby! ;)

Spin would be good, the 'ring trip should run the engine in nicely :D

As Leon says it was advertised as "excellent condition"

Priority now is to get it running and then deal with the seller.

Agreed, the engine is in a bad way for something that's done "73k". Totally OT can you email/msn me about the 5" gauge. I have some bits here that might interest you! jonesol1[at]hotmail.com

Engine is now out (again) :D

How many times have we seen this pic?!

DSCF0794.jpg

I've emailed the seller, waiting for a reply.

At least it's going to be easier to run the rear brake line now with the engine out, hopefully will get a lot done today, to try and minimise the workload during the week.

Still happy!! :D

You are simply amazing. There is no other word to describe it.

Here is me looking at the weather thinking there is a real possibility there is no way I can clean my car in time for the RR day whilst you casually post yea, as long as my new engine arrives by Thursday its all good

Serious respect

Sorry to hear you got a duff engine, I've been watching this thread from the start but haven't really posted.

I don't think you've posted anything regarding a re-map, so I'll ask you.

Are there any plans to take the engine to 220bhp or do any other tweaks etc?
