My landlord changed my locks

I'm not in england or wales unfortunately, so I will have to check the legals in my country.

Where are you as we can't help without knowing that.

You're probably gonna get lots of advice about deposit schemes which won't apply in the crappier eastern European countries I'm guessing this is in.

While we bide the time waiting to find out where the OP lives, let's take guesses. I'm guessing he's a Scottish yes voter and thus doesn't associate himself with the rest of us.

You think you 'know your rights' then went for the cheap shot and withheld the last months rent from someone you are concerned about. it was always only going to end one way.

You didn't even give him a chance to not pay you. You should have at the most employed someone to provide an independent check out and survey and fought the deposit through legal action, now you are risking your belongings and stand even less chance of seeing the deposit again.

Rubbish.

Also you haven't considered the fact that after my with held rent he owes me about 2 grand. Also seeing that I have removed the lock off the basement and found most of my stuff there, that is not the issue.

Personally having the ball ache of all ballachaches to get 2 grand back isn't worth it, because he will claim till he is blue in the face all sort of reductions, and I can't be bothered with all that emotional expenditure for probably 1 grand. I don't have the time for it nowadays.

This thread wasn't started to get the money back, I have accepted that it is gone.

OP so what country are you in? If I came back to my home and found the locks changed and belongings moved I'd be straight on the phone to the police! Where are you even living? This thread is fishy..

you rented a flat from a coke head??????

did you know he was one before you took it?

it is near christmas and he will surely want enough money for his christmas drug binges, with holding rent will make it worse.

yeh i think your in the right but if he really is a crack head you might find him and his mates high on drugs trying to kick your door in or something for his money that he will think he is entitled too if he runs out of drugs.......

also how the hell did a druggie manage to get a lock changed wtf lol

edit: sorry for been negative im drunk and screwed in the head lol

Sorry to hear about this OP

get proper CAB advice ASAP. You should have paid your rent but they've gone way beyond what they're legally allowed to do.

Not an expert but from my experience courts are there to protect the tenant a lot more than the landlord who has really REALLY done wrong here

Northern Europe! Around 3 months rent is standard practice here. Screwing renters out of their deposits is also, I'm afraid. I'm not trying to get the deposit back, just after all his phone ranting I want to know generally what procedure would be best to protect myself given european countries tend to follow similar legalities.

He's not in this country, so CAB won't help him much :p He doesn't want the money back, isn't after legal advice... I'm not sure what he wants tbh.

No we didn't know he was when we rented the place, he came across very professional...:)

Clearly despite his outward successful appearance, the landlord was renting out his home and living out of his car due to spiraling gambling and drug debts. The debts got massively out of control and one year ago, the kingpin kidnapped the landlord's daughter and held her hostage until he satisfied his debts in full. Because you withheld the last month's rent, he was unable to make the final payment and the last he ever saw of his daughter was her being bundled into a car and driven off to the nearest port to be sold into sex slavery for the rest of her life.

The landlord, destroyed by the turn of events and racked by guilt, found his way to the nearest bar where he attempted to drown his sorrows in the bottom of a vodka bottle. As he did so, a mysterious stranger approached and sat down next to him. Slurring, the landlord explained the situation, the stranger nodding then said four simple words, "I have a plan". Out of the depths of his despair, the landlord spied a glimmer of hope, "What is it you need?"

Sobered up by the prospect of reclaiming a portion of the life he once had, the landlord proceeded to the apartment to prepare. All he needed was an empty apartment for the next few days, somewhere that the stranger could do his work, and perhaps he might see his daughter again.

Your move OP.
