My Log Burner...

I don't think you can really install it badly.

As an update on mine. The log burner is working wonderfully. However when the chimney was being rebuilt something has gone wrong as smoke is somehow getting into the cavity wall at the back of our house when using the front room open fire. Walked into the back room and it was coming out of an air vent! No idea how it's getting in!

Isn't that a contradiction!!

That sounds like an absolute bad install.

Easy fix though. Sounds like you just need a flue liner

A friend of mine has had their install condemned, and its was a "Pro" install too. Flue is not sealed correctly. No register plate and the burner is not fixed down.

I don't think our stove is fixed down, or even has the eyelet holes/means to do so. Its certainly not budging as weighs an absolute ton.

Are registry plates even a requirement too? They don't serve much more purpose than stopping any chaff falling down chimney, unless of course you've vermiculite backfilled.

If there's been an open fire in there before you may be forever cleaning them as they tend to bleed creosote when wet. You could try something like brick acid, but be careful as it's pretty caustic stuff.

I took the easy option and just boarded out the fireplace with Hardiebacker.
Next job is to choose a log burner. I like the more modern square look of the Flavel Arundel or Dik Geurts Ivar 5.
Both seem to get good reviews, has anyone got any experience of either of these or know of anything similar looking which is decent?

The bricks in my existing fireplace are really, really filthy so before I get my log burner fitted I wanted to clean it up. What is a decent product to clean decades of soot from the bricks?

Brick acid might work....But I assume youve done it by now

Only just seen this, I've got the DG Ivar 5 and have found it very good, really easy to clean and very controllable burn. Anything in particular you want to know?

Also, don't be afraid to try and negotiate a better price on the fire. We managed to get a significant discount, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a big markup by resellers.

Looking at getting a wood burner in our planned extension. Visited a show room and see a letterbox style flush with wall style. This has changed our plans. But really like the modern/contemporary look of them.

I have an ivar 5 and haven't found any problems with it.

I've not got a burner or anything but we like to go on short breaks in the UK, many locations (self-catering cottages/huts etc) have log burners which we would use.
Having to buy wood from the locations was bit naff the last time as half was too damp and too big for the burner/pit and a mish-mash of old scrap wood etc. The fuel ran out quick early in the evening (due to half being not suitable) and we weren't in the position to source any more.

Was thinking of buying a few bags of half decent fuel to keep at home and just take with us as it would be better quality and cheaper.
Obviously not as cheaps as you lot buy by the tonne but was thinking something like
Homefire Heat Logs Bag 10kg (3 for £10 from Wickes)
Would these do and be suitable for something like a fire pit also and be small enough to fit in something like the size of burner below?

Cheers

I bought a property at the end of last year which has a stove burner. There's no flue, no vent in the bedroom above where it's been bricked up, and no cowl. So I have a quote for sorting those 3 things, my question is (after reading contradictory things on the internet), if I have a flue, is it safe to put a vent in the breast in the bedroom which is directly above where the stove is? Some places say yes, some no, but surely if the smoke and heat is all contained in the flue, there shouldn't be any issue?

Cheers - it's not exact but last load (same size) filled this and the small log store which would make it around 2.5-3.0m3

It's a mix of seasoned hard and softwood

Just need to the prunings from the big store into the medium one (for next year) so I can get this and the small store stacked :)
