My new car

As long as you're happy with the purchase then its all good. No nessisarily the best way to do it, going out without researching the going price but you say you've landed lucky and not paid over the odds.

A friend of mine had an '06 116, just before the warranty ran out some sort of hydraulic failed in the car.. had it of been out of warranty it would have been over £1,000 to put right. Hopefully that's a one off but it wasn't half a shock to us both.

He's now chopped the car in question in for a 2009 116Msport Diesel in championship white and seems pleased with it, thought I'm not sure it was really the right thing as he's gone from a 1.6 petrol to a 1.6 diesel with the addition of a lights pack and a funny engine which cuts out when its in neutral and the handbrake is on :p... around 8k to change too! But he's happy :-)

The 116d is a 2 litre diesel but its detuned to produce no horsepower at all in order to appeal to people who know nothing about cars except that it says BMW on the front and is the least tax on the company car list.

Your mate is insane.

Well I've just had an e-mail to say it's ready to be collected this evening

So I think Fox is right, they whacked a battery in and probably didn't even look at the ABS warnings. So hopefully it's as someone said and just a low battery causing problems doing the startup routine

Otherwise it will be back in pronto

Hi Toby

******* ******** did diagnostics on the car and it all relates to the battery, as it is only 23% efficient, this will have an adverse effect on certain componants, we are, as we speak putting a new one in. I will email you to let you know all is 100% ok.

Does that sound right or is he just fobbing me off so they can get away with sticking a new battery in and nothing else?

Still hitting the car with a hammer every morning to start it? ;)

A hammer is a bit OTT, it did need the odd thump to unseize it but that was becoming tiresome and since the car is going for it's MOT, it would be unwise to 'hope' the car starts for the MOT tester.

Anyway, back OT. It definitely sounds like the battery and hopefully you can go back to enjoying it soon :)

Low battery can cause the ABS pump to take a while to prime.

The warning light comes on when the ABS system isn't ready as well as when it has a fault IIRC. Last time I saw mine lit was after a major emergency brake from @70 mph on the Motorway ;)

I know... its ever so, ever so slightly faster to 60... according to him - but then that might just be a biased comment.

Other than getting a newer car i cant see the benefit. For the money he paid he could have bought a very nice A3 or 3 Series. He's 22 so i guess insurance was his concern.

When he mentioned that it was awesome that the road tax was only £35 or something i really had to try not to jump on that bait and ask him how many years it would take his £135 a year saving on something like my 1.6 civic to re-coop the £8-10k extra he spent on the car. Making that a major factor in the car purchase for a private buyer, in my own opinion, isn't sound thinking.

I wonder if there is potential to get the car remapped to make the most of the 2.0 litre lump that's sat there detuned? Doubt he'd warm to that idea on a car with 30 months warranty remaining though!

Anyway, cant argue with him as he swears blind it was the right move for him...

Like i said, i think it will just be a low battery. Low batteries can cause a host of strange electrical problems - let's hope that's why the ABS light took a while to go out!

Second trip into the garage today, booo! But luckily this was a minor problem

Just had a brand new BMW Professional HU ordered for me by the garage under warranty. The lower half of the screen had a couple of lines going across it which got quite annoying when text wasn't clear because of it

So they agreed to replace it and buy a brand new one for me! Noice!

Other than that....

Loving the car still

It's a little more thirsty than I was expecting given it is a diesel, £40 will only do about 350-380 miles, I was expecting slightly more than that, and I'm not even that heavy footed anymore (well sometimes :p)

But I still smile after a good drive in it so that's good

That seems a bit crap to me.

I was getting nearly 350 miles from a petrol 2.0 Focus for around £45.

Why do people quote how many miles they get to an amount of money, it sounds ***** and means nothing as petrol prices are constantly changing :(

What?

I was just stating what I get out of £40 saying it was lower than expected! Wasn't complaining.

I average 38-39mpg so it's pretty normal (Im guessing), I just thought diesel goes a little way longer than that that's all

Because it gives a ball park feel for the economy and doesn't require nerdy excel spreadsheets :p

That economy sounds rubbish. I would be disappointed with that unless I was doing no mileage at all and several cold starts a day. Only 6 mpg better than my Octavia which I don't hang about in.

It does seem normal though

As poor as it may seem, on babybmw 120d's get anywhere from 400-550 (depending on driving/journeys) out of a full tank which is about £50-52. So 350-380 out of £40 is about right.

I'm sure it is inline with other 120d's it just seems miles away from the quoted figure. My last 2 cars have been within 3mpg of the quoted combined figure for comparison.

I accepted it would be a lot more in running costs when I bought it though so I'm certainly not complaining. And I've never been one to think about fuel costs before getting in the car, if I want to drive or need to get somewhere, then I'll just drive and when I need to fill up, I'll do it.

My wallet does the crying for the both of us :p
