My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

Alty, I noticed a bit of ghosting when playing full-screen games, but now I don't. My visual cortex must be compensating for it. Oooh-la-la.

Anyway - I've been searching like mad on Google about this component-only-at-480i thing and it does seem a load of tosh. People everywhere are talking about how they've ran GT4 at 1080i on their PS2 and plugged in HD set top boxes and got 1080i pictures. I think we may be able to breathe again now.

until i see it myself i will take it with a pinch of salt - the eternal pessimist me :p

Alty, wonder if you got yours from the place I got mine from, similar price...

Mines going back due to several dark spots on the screen, that appear to make any pixels under them darker, which does get awfully annoying when they show through your lovely wallpaper etc! Plus even my old phones VGA camera could pick them up. So off it goes, back to where it came from :( Back to my 19" CRT 1600x1200 @ 85Hz while I wait for another deal on one here :)

Hi there,

I received a brand new 2405FPW yesterday and I have to say it's a fantastic monitor and there are no dead pixels although there is one small problem that is bugging me.

Upon warming up of the monitor (let's say running it for about 2-3 hours or so) there is a high pitched noise and the noise seems to vary in volume depending on what sort of colours are represented on the screen.

I've read the large thread on the dell forums and a previous one posted on here and i'm contemplating whether I should get Dell to send me a replacement or not. I'm a bit worried that I might get a refurbished one or a worse monitor than the one I currently have.

Details of my monitor are the following: Made In Hungary, Produced in August 2005 and is revision A01.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks In Advance.

Well mine was dead on arrival so dell said they would send me a new one.

That was last wednesday, I phoned them back today and they said it would be another 3 or 4 working days. They could send me a refurb in a day but a new one takes time. You should get a new one if the original order number refers to a dell order that is less than 28 days old.

What happened to the next-business day onsite warranty thing? I would expect a courier to bring a new one within 24 hours. The cheek!

Mine was supposed to be £600 but i managed to persuade them to gimme free same day delivery as I lived within 10 miles of them and discount for payin cash. The company I got it from have a 0 dead pixel guarantee and are all checked before sent out unless you specifically ask for an unopened box. All with the standard 3 year next day warranty from Dell makes me a happy bunny.

I played NS on it last night in widescreen - you can deffo tell the motion blurring but it dont detract from the gaming.

CSS played well as did DoD Source.

Not played BF2 yet, have gotta re-install it on this machine.

Playback of DVDs (Batman Begins) was excellent but animation such as Family Guy wasnt too impressive at all in stretched or enlarged ratios. In a smaller box tho was fine.

Playback of Divxs was a mixed bag and solely depended on the quality of rip.

Its all currently at factory spec and will try n understand how to do PiP n something about gridlines that has been mentioned earlier. Its deffo quite "dull" in brightness compared to my 19" Sony TFT but you get used to it i spose.

So far so good, but hopefully with a lil tinkering I can get this momma ROCKING :D

Anyone got any suggestions for colour/brightness settings?

Hmmm, mine was similar, checked every panel before sending unless requested an unopened box, but shipping was free. They managed to send me two faulty monitors, first one had several stuck red pixels, second one had black dots and a tiny scratch in the corner, not impressed. My 19" Iiyama looks so small now! Never mind, will have another 2405FPW as soon as refund comes through :)

Somewhere in this thread, is a small table showing the colour settings that he/she uses, near the beginning I think :)

If the 2405 is "dull" compared to your Sony TFT, then I don't know what this Iiyama CRT, its really dull compared to my 2405! But then, it is playing up (screen gets darker the lighter the picture) So want a 2405 ASAP! :mad:

My beloved Sony is the HDM94SP and is a bloomin amazin TFT. Comes with the X-Brite techno that tbh seriously kicks ass imho. If only all TFTs had it :(

Dude. if you have had not one but TWO dodgy monitors from a company then I would seriously consider takin your money elsewhere!!!

I must admit that I am enjoying it so far.... surely this is too good to be true tho!

Yep, 2nd one taken away today, refund due to arrive after they inspect it tomorrow. Not sure where I will get another from, probably here, but I will probably miss the current 2405 offer :(

I thought the 2405 was bright enough, so I'd guess that Sony you got could burn retina's!

Speaking of dullness.... I must admit that I am getting eyeache after about 5 hours use :( I deffo gotta sort out the settings. I usually spend 9-12 hours in front of the PC if I aint at uni or got other plans etc! Damn PC games for being sooooooo good lol :p

i found these good for VGA:

Contrast = 60
Brightness = 5
Pixel Clock = 50
Phase = 14

on DVI i have brightness at 35, and contrast is fixed. I've turned gamma down a little to a level of 1.8 though in my graphics card

these colour settings seemed very popular across a few forums:

Red = 36 / Green = 33 / Blue = 32

its known problem that, its rare in the latest batch but dell will replace it for you

I used monitor calibration wizard 1.0 (think its in the sticky) and it made a world of difference, colours are excellent now with a tuned profile. Have the monitor brightness at 10 and then calibrated it with the prog.

Right, sorry if this has been asked before but what will a 7800gt be like on this monitor if playing a games like FEAR, CSS and the Lost Coast demo. Might pick myself up one after xmas, thats if the optys will be in stock b4 then.
I also want this monitor to replace my tv in my room because it takes up too much desk room.

Next business day guarantee gives you a refurb, because the order date was within 28 days they wanted to send me a brand new one. Brand new ones take a week or so. I'm still waiting!

man......I can't decided wether to get one or not.

PROS = Its BIG and looks Badass

CONS = Some people mentioning the ghosting effect, dullness, possibilty of a newer version of the screen coming out in Feb with more features and fully HDTV compaible

You guys rave about them so much, and I so could do with a LCD panel bigger than my Samsung Syncmaster 17".

Not sure what to do now......
