My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

@ slap_ed

Glad I could help mate! If you could post pics that'd be a help for me.

Any eye for an eye I say ;)

I've just had a spooky thought - will this monitor accept a 1080i component signal from the Xbox 360? I've not seen anything anywhere that says what kind of devices you can connect to this screen. Thanks.

plays 1080i xbox games fine like draghons lair ( not great game but well its 1080i) and i watch my stuff thri xbmc upscaled to 1080i ( not sure if this counts)

and as far as im aware 720p is what most games will support at the begining

Aye, the games will be in 720p but I'm thinking the X360 will scale up to 1080 better than the Dell. Also, the Xbox Live Arcade and the Guide stuff will run at 1080.

sorry mate i have no way of doing that just at moment, but will do soon ! :o

I'm seriously considering splahing out on this Dell for my new setup, but I'm a bit wary about the whole ghosting issue.

I'm a photographer by trade and need something that'll give me a lot of screen to work with in Photoshop and allow me to multitask and have a few folder/IE/whatever windows open at the same time. So far so good, right?

Now, I'm not much of a gamer. All I ever play (if I do indeed play at all) is Enemy Territory, and I'm used to playing this on a 15.1" SXGA+ TFT laptop screen at 1280*1024. Coming from a screen like this, am I likely to notice any of this ghosting you fellas are talking about?

I had also considered the Viewsonic VP930, but the Dell... well, it's just got so much more to offer. I'm also wondering about the graphics card. I won't need anything really meaty to run ET well, but will I need something reasonably hardcore to run the Dell at its native resolution?

PS. I'm impressed by the dedication shown by certain members of the forum. I've only really browsed around this folder, but I'm amazed (and heartened) by the effort that some of you lot put in to your topics.

Glitch:

I was really worried before I got it as I use it for games mainly. I haven't had the problems some have had, but I do think with this monitor its all down to the individual. Some people are seeing issues, so they must be there, but I haven't noticed myself.

After having mine for a couple of weeks now, I am slightly disappointed with the "black" factor. Previously I only had a 17" TFT so the backlight was not really a problem. Areas in Doom 3, for example, did look very dark on the ADi A715. I couldn't see the monsters in areas where the lights have gone off. But with this Dell, no matter what I do, I can't get that same feeling. If you lower the brightness/gamma down all you do is darken the area so the backlight shines through as a kind of shimmering purple/blue colour. I don't think it's a problem with my particular screen, it's probably just the panel in general.

The thing that made it more noticeable was after playing the Xbox 360 on its 23" Samsung TV. Those blacks really did look black. And beautiful!

Anyway, it's not really a mega issue. There are far more benefits from the screen than problems. I enjoyed playing "Perimeter" yesterday at 1600x1200 without stretching, which itself is like playing on a 21" screen.

Burumbar; I think I agree with you there.

I guess a 'fault' can be found with everything if you look hard enough, but it all depends on who is doing the looking and why.

Oh well, there's always the Eizo FlexScan S2110W. Slightly smaller but similar specs. Shame it's a similar price though!

quick question: If you were offered this monitor in stock at £575 fully inc with 0 dead pixel policy and next day delivery - would you go for it? (it has 3 year dell guarentee on it as per). Am just wondering whether to go for it or hold out for something better?

Yes, I went for mine straight away when I saw the OcUK special offer at £610. Dell currently sells this screen for £950-odd!!

Ah, that's the $64,000 question, Alty. If that were your binding philosophy you would never buy anything technological. Things change all the time and very quickly.

Seriously, I don't know of anyone else who even makes big panels like this, except Apple. And we know they charge more for less features. I don't think Dell will be changing this display anytime soon unless they do introduce a 2560x1600 model to rival Apple at 30".

Aye, I can appreciate the comments - I was just wondering if anyone knew of any specific models that would rival this one any time soon as £575 is a lot to spend on a monitor! :)

Catastrophic! I hope that this doesn't apply to the newer August A01 revision. Some folks are saying they are running HD digital TV boxes off it at 1080i though.

Otherwise, I guess it's VGA cable time - all is not lost yet.

Have just paid £575 for one of these mommas n its getting delivered later tonight - 9pm Wish me luck!!! Even with the bad news about no HD Xbox 360 thru components, I decided I may as well go for it as VGA is still available. I am dreading the fearful ghosting :(

Alty, remember to not throw away the box or any packaging if you have any concerns that way you can always fall back on the distance selling act:), if your not entirely happy.

I wouldn't worry about ghosting, I doubt you will have any issues with picture quality or responsiveness with this display, especially with the DVI input. There is a slight haze of afterglow, but its only really noticeable at colour temperatures that contrast extremely with the chosen brightness setting. The result giving a similar effect to that of Far cry using the "cold" rendering HDR setting, but on a much lesser degree.

anyhow thats just my experiance with the two that were sent to me, hope this elps :)

Great gaming displays imo .
