My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

Hi guys, I've just joined the forum, specifically due to the amount of you who have this Dell 24" , you're all a fountain of knowledge! :D

I think this monitor could do wonders for me as I will be using it primarily for video editing, photographic restoration and editing and enhancing photos for sale (as well of games playing of course!)

So I had a few questions if you guys wouldn't mind!

Video editing should be great with a wide screen due to the size of the timeline I should be able to see but...

What are they like at displaying photos? Is there an option to allow the photo to be shown in its correct proportions or will it be stretched out of proportion due to the wide screen?

I am currently using a 19" Iiyama Vision Master Pro CRT which gives fantastic blending and vividness to colours, is the Dell capable of the same type of job? (Never used a TFT before so its all new to me!)

What is Dells policy on dead pixels? I see some of you have been mentioning whining coming out of the unit, not many people mention dead pixels so that’s a good thing...do they guarantee 0 dead pixels, or 5 etc before a swap?

I would really appreciate any answers or any general help / advice you can give.
I am looking to purchase this monitor in the next couple of days as long as it is the right thing for me.

Many thanks :)

when you open pics, it opens them at the correct aspect ratio, it doesnt stretch them or anything. The desktop real estate and resolution is really nice for multi tasking side by side (see my early pics on first page) and would be good for photo editing. The colour reproduction is very good, and in general, colours are nice and vivid on TFT's and the image is so sharp and bright that they are a joy to work with. There's a MASSIVE chunk of info on the 2405FPW in the sticky too, so have a look at that for some more info and plenty of user comments.

Dell don't have a zero dead pixel policy, and i think it's around the 5-7 dead sub pixel mark before they consider the monitors faulty. Having said that, they have a good CS and returns policy and so you may be able to arrange a swap for less anyway

Hi TheBigCheese, I bought two of these LCD monitors (at the overclockers reduced price about two weeks ago, glad I did), I've had O dead pixels and had no noise from either of them. Yet have got a new PSP much smaller and one lazy pixel!

I bought them for photography use and small game use. For Photoshop they are great, on the one LCD I've put in a TV digital pci card with Freeview TV channels.

Baddass, please could you tell me how to post photos on this Forum, will then show the setup with two
2405’s

Many thanks :) :D

Thank you Brum Man (Blues man I hope!!)

Host your pics there, then take the link has the
around it and put that link into a post, it will then put the pics up.

Hi G4AJG, thanks for the info, its very reassuring to speak to so many people who have the monitors already.

I guess I've just got to take the plunge and part with the cash now, although it would be great to see pics of your setup first (although I have already seen all the other users pics).

I've just been reading more reviews and comments generally about LCD's and there are mentions of 'backlight glare'...

What is that and is it a problem in the Dell?

Also a lot has been mentioned about the brightness of the monitor (I guess old LCD's were dim?), is it too bright though, I have read that it can do proper blacks, but can it do subtle lighting as well as the ouch-I-just-looked-into-the-Sun look?

Thanks

backlight bleed is a problem on some monitors where you cna clearly see the backlight leaking around the edges / corners of the screen meaning when you're in a dark room, the backlihgting doesnt seem even. The Dell 2005FPW has been plagued by problems like this since it's release, but the 2405FPW generally doesnt suffer from these issues. The monitor is very bright, but you can easily adjust the settings to get it looking right dont worry

Oooo .. hmmm I have been looking at one of these (2005), but that has given me cause for thought.
Over £400 for a monitor, it better be pretty faultless IMO ;)

Omg that thing is huge! :D I got a couple of questions, When you play a DVD does it looks ok and use the full screen? Also what graphic cards are you guys useing?I'm getting round to buying 7800gtx just want to no if its capable of playing games at that res with all settings at max ect, I saw on a benchmark that a 7800 gtx had a hard time dealing with FEAR at max above 1280/768  .

DVDs will never use the full screen (unstretched vertically) as none are 16:10, few movies still use 16:9 even...but you'll get less letterboxing compared to a 4:3 screen on a widescreen movie.

If you turn off vertex lighting and soft shadows in FEAR you'll find a huge performance boost (and it still looks lovely). Its taken me a while to get my settings balanced perfectly, but I can get it playable at 1920x1200 on 4xAA with most things on maximum on my A64 3200+/1GB PC3200/6800GT. That said I tend to favour 1280x800 with 4xAA to keep things as fluid as possible.

I use power dvd 6, which cost me a £1. It does the stretch job for you and films playback fantastic at full screen.

I'd rather retain the correct aspect ratio and have small black borders :p
