My Quest for a cooler xbox360

I'm just hoping Elrein doesn't stop there, now the warranty is well and truly void it's a good chance to make some nice mods to his 360.

I expect weekly progress reports on your modding! ;)

The disk doesnt spin when you are on the dashboard, or playing the live arcade, watching downloaded trailers etc. I dont know about anyone else, but i can clearly hear the fans. Its rather stating the obvious that it wont effect the DVD drive noise and anyway that bears no relation to what i was asking about. It was obviously done to try and cool the 360 a little better, but the fans may run a little quieter due to unrestricting the airflow. I just wanted to know if the OP had noticed this. Im not going to be trying it myself.

My fans are certainly loud, I have my 360 in a tv cabinet with doors closed and I can still hear the fans whilst watching mpg movies etc.

Congrats to the OP for having the balls to attack his 360. I may swap the fans over in mine for some quiter ones when I have seen what it runs like in the summer.

Even if his does break down its not the end of the world is it after all most shops seem to have regular stock now.

Erm? I have mine next to my shuttle, it's pretty damn quiet except when the DVD drive is going full pelt. Not in denail.

And I've just realised DoA4 doesn't appear to be spinning the drive up much, can't hear it.

Nah it's not that. If you'd painted it I doubt anyone would care, but it's out of the ordinary. Taking a dremel to it for no particular gain, now that's something completely different.

Either way, so long as you don't come near mine I couldn't care less what you do :D
 
Looks ghetto, I hope theres something more you can do to make it more worthwhile. Is there not a DVD drive replacement mod where a quieter drive can be used.

You might as well do the sponge pad mod to the drive so it doesnt eat disks so easily.


You havent actually harmed the console just its looks, obviously they could never retail it like that and also it'll let more dust in now. Has it been any more reliable since the mod?
 
Sorry to say it, but that looks horrendous!

EDIT: Also, you've made extra exhaust space, but no extra intake - the fans can only push out as much air as is currently inside the machine so i'd wager that there will be no real difference to temperatures unless the intake vents were modified too.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I cut a gaping hole in the back of my Xbox 360 the first think I'd do WOULDN'T be to show myself up on a forum, I'd probably try psychiatric help first to determine where my destructive tendancies come from.
 
The fact that so many people are complaining and saying it's foolish because the warranty is void just goes to show that this console is an unreliable heap right now.
I never hear anyone saying, "OMG, you overclocked your Opteron to 3ghz, there goes your warranty..."

The fact is someone has cut away the grill in the quest to improve the cooling of their 360 and hopefully guarantee it doesn't break like so many other have... Don;t know why people are complaining about this, not as if it affects their lives in any way.

Good for you I say, more Xbox 360 madness is now required!!

The mod will hardly effect temperatures, if at all. Even if there is a slight decrease, I dont think it would be enough to make the difference between the console dieing or not.

It's not the same at all. A direct comparison would be if someone had just bought a complete PC and decided to cut away part of the case, for little or no benefit. They'd have voided the warranty and be left with a PC they could never sell in that state. In fact what the OP has done is worse, because at least PCs are easy to fix yourself - a 360 is not.

What he's done is pretty stupid I'm afraid. He must have more money than sense :)
