My Quest for a cooler xbox360

Once ive had my fun with DOA4 im going to open it up and start working on cleaning up the exhust and create some proper inlets, window the side and "decal girl" the rest.
Cooling was my 1 and only reason for getting out the cutters and now it DOES pump out a lot more of that nasty hot air so id call that a good start. To say if ive noticed any improvements with stability or temps im sorry but i just cant tell as it was 100% before the mod. Last year it got quite hot in this little room so i just want to give it a little helping hand through those summer months.

If you want to critisize <--spelling? go for it, it bothers me not. I just thought i would post something that mabye someone might take an interest in as i could have easily done it silent and just posted the end product but where is the fun in that. One thing for sure is that i didnt post it to say hey look at me cutting up £207 ??? now that would be crazy

All i want is an xbox360 that i can call my own :D

I never hear anyone saying, "OMG, you overclocked your Opteron to 3ghz, there goes your warranty..."

I can't believe you're comparing the two. AMD won't know you've had 1.8v through your opty. I think MS might notice two ruddy great holes though.

It does seem a bit of a daft thing to do, you said you havent had any problems, so why do it? Surely microsoft have designed the thing to work in summer months as well, if it didnt, cutting some holes in the case isnt going to miraculously stop that. Now, if you had said "my quest for a quieter xbox 360", im sure everyone would be all ears :) )

Case is fully dismantled now, taking the cover into work tomorrow to start the window and intake mod. So far so good.

The cpu cooler looks way smaller than i expected

The hardest thing so far was unclipping the outer shells

Im going to put a small grilled intake just infont of the cpu cooler, should sort out any intake problems illl have from the bigger exhaust flow. Dont really want to start spinning off too much metal, im scared enough as it is hoping i dont spark something and ruin the project.

Not sure about the DVD drive, ill take a look at it but thats probably about it.

Should have it assembled by the end of this w/e if everything goes to plan then all ill have to do is decal girl the exterior if i can find something suitable.

Erm? I have mine next to my shuttle, it's pretty damn quiet except when the DVD drive is going full pelt. Not in denail.

And I've just realised DoA4 doesn't appear to be spinning the drive up much, can't hear it.

Shuttles aren't quiet. Correction, most shuttles aren't quiet.

However, I doubt the 360 is paticularly noisy in an average house.

As for the grill cutting - I don't see anything wrong with it. OK they're fairly rare right now, but they're not paticularly hard to get hold of within a couple of days. He also hasn't broken it, destroyed it, or otherwise rendered it inoperable. Even if he had - its not THAT expensive.

I am concerned that some people think its OK to abuse someone for modifying something THEY own. Its like saying 'you fool, you just put a window in the side of your PC case, whose STUPID enough to do that'. Its HIS item to do with as he pleases.

Some people once said some other people were stupid for getting in ships and sailing the oceans. Wonder who the stupid people are now.

Whilst I agree with the point, I don't think windowed 360s are going to change the map any time soon ;)

You never know... it could be the right shape to distort some light coming from the DVD drive's laser making it go faster than the speed of light, which over the course of a few decades results in a new age of space exploration :)

Or not ;)

It's under warranty, if it overheats and dies he get's a free replacement or repair, now he's cut the grill out of the back he doesn't, surely it'd be better to wait until the warranty expires before butchering it? As he's posted it on a public forum I'd also say that people are perfectly entitled to express their opinion, I don't think it's your place to tell people what they can and can't pass comment on.

If I go sky diving I know I could severely injure myself (possibly die) and that my life insurance (warranty) won't cover me. Its still my decision. I would expect people to voice concerns, but not outright insult me (you idiot, moron, etc.).

Edit:

Actually extending that further. I'm sure after the sky dive people would be rather congratulatory 'well done', 'that must have been fun' etc. Sky diving could result in death - yet you get (potentially) grats. You modify a small object with no sentience, and suddenly get abuse from people. Funny how the world works eh?

Good job when my warranty runs out ill be doing the same by this time next year they will only be £150 so if it breaks ill buy a new one.

Good job can’t wait to see the finished project.

Plus its your 360 and I love the way you don’t care what others think and rather then people criticising about the warranty and stuff they should think about when they cut holes on the cases add windows and lights some people have water cooling they don’t mention if it leaks there PC will be well knackered. A hole in the back of a plastic case will help ventilation and cooling good modding my friend. I’m sure you will be able to buy a now case in the not so distant future.
