So, quite a while back at the beginning of August I posted some rubbish about buying a Silvia, soon after I did just that, waited a long time for it to sail most the way around the world before last week it landed at Southampton.

So, owing to some hooliganism at Anglesey causing some delay, I roped a friend into helping me collect it. Turned into a super long day, over 12 hours on the road, but we saw some interesting stuff.

So, arrived, spoke to a couple of people, few minutes later and she was loaded up.

There were a few other interesting motors there.

Toyota Will Vi, an unusual car.. What's that in the background though...

Another 15, a Spec-R with Origin aero. Love it, the security is so lax at the docks we could have easily loaded up that one and drove it out, bit shocking really.

You thought that Figaros were old hat and consigned to history? Apparently there are still plenty more where they came from..

Back to my car though, home and parked next to her older sister.

The nav remembered it's last known location, Port of Kanda, Japan.

The navi system is entirely in Japanese, and has no maps outside of Japan. This makes it illegible and useless, but it is a cool toy and does have some car info like fuel use, service reminders, trip computer. In traditional JDM style, Radio 2 is the only thing I can listen to :D

Today I had the chance to get it out, have a poke around, fit the wheels I bought a few weeks back and give it a wash.

It looks a bit monster trucky, desperately needs lowering and the arches will need a roll since these wheels are a pretty manly fitment. I'm not entirely sold on them, but they might work if done in gloss white and lowered.

My favourite part of it though is how immaculate it is underneath, no word of a lie it is like a brand new car, I can't believe it's 12 years old. Even the exposed threads on bolts look box fresh. I snapped a couple of quick videos while swapping the wheels to show you.

Impressions of it so far...
It's a light car, 1210kg and you can tell. Feels light on it's feet to drive. It has little in the way of noise insulation or posh trim, polar opposite to the BMW in this regard. It doesn't make a nice 'thunk' when shutting the boot or bonnet for instance.
The cabin feels small, overall dimensions not that much smaller than the e36 though, 3 or 4 inches shorter I guess. Rear visibility is good though, driving position seems strange can't quite get used to it. Maybe I'm just too used to sitting low down in a bucket seat with a deep cone wheel up in my chest. This will be getting the bucket seat and probably a Nardi deep corn, I hope to swap the Cobra/Driftworks seat for a Recaro SPG in good time.
Steering is really light, more than I would like, bit heavier with the 235/45/17 on, should be tighter still with the caster up to 7.5deg.
Diff appears to be open which really sucks, probably put a Nismo GT Pro in it.
Engine is NASP 2l so obviously is weak, goal is to put a Spec-R motor in, light tuned 325hp or so.

Will be an ongoing project for a while, a bit more interesting than my battle wagon BMW, so will try and keep this updated.

As long as there's no mention of Godzilla attack in the service history, it should be pretty hassle free

Didn't come with much history, only 1 receipt for a service 10k km ago. The oil looks fresh though, nice light golden colour although the computer keeps popping up and telling me to PIT, listing oil and filter change and tyre rotation. I like the Japanesey ness of calling it a pit stop rather than a service :p The engine purrs lovely though, and no VVT rattle at all.

It did come with the handbook though, this is not quite as amusing as the Fairlady Z one. It does have a whole page covering the car becoming stuck on a level crossing though, a bit random. Apparently franticly waving at the train driver is an ok last resort if the other options don't work, such as getting 3 blokes to push it

I have a set of Aero skirts, want the rear spats but they are mega rare and expensive, don't like the optional Aero front bumper, might do the DC2 front lip thing on the stock bumper.

FWIW Spec-S had the same Aero options, it is not exclusive to R.

The BNR32 was one of those cars you don't want to look at too closely hence I didn't. Go and take it though lol, the keys will be inside.

Looks pretty nice man.

Surprised you went for a N/A one.

I would imagine based on condition though as most turbos have probably been drifted!

To get a Spec-R in this condition would have cost a LOT more, putting a SR20DET motor in this will cost less than £1k. I would like an original Spec-R of course, but it's not worth 5k+ just for a badge on the side.

other than the motor swap, what ancillaries need to be fitted to bring your car to spec r level?

are the brakes etc the same?

Brakes are different, 2 pot instead of 4 pot callipers on the front, same size disc though, it's a sub £100 swap and going to the 296mm Skyline setup is only marginally more cost.

Chassis wise, the Spec-R has a couple of extra strengthening braces, most of which seems to focus on strengthening the boot floor. I may or may not bother with this, it's all bolt on anyway.

Transmission wise the spec-r has a 6 speed and helical lsd. The 6 speed is well known to be prone to breaking, and swapping in the 5 speed is popular, the helical diff is also known for being a bit rubbish and everyone swaps them for plated diffs. The actual diff casing and driveshafts are the same though.

Engines are relatively easy to obtain, many have been rebuilt though and I have a deep mistrust of rebuilt engines so will avoid. There's one for sale up in Buxton for a good price, I was going to leave the engine purchase until the new year but who knows I might buy that one tomorrow :p

It's not that big of a project, everything is totally compatible and simply bolts in, I've done all of this stuff before with BMWs.

Honestly the import process was no hassle.

Goes like this..

  • Find your dealer/agent in Japan and find the car you are looking for.
  • Discuss details, negotiate price and terms, pay.
  • Dealer/agent sorts out everything to do with exporting from Japan and gets it on the boat.
  • Organise a shipping agent in the UK to deal with all the red tape.
  • Wait
  • Couple of days before the ship comes in, you'll be invoiced by the shipping line and your agent, pay the bill.
  • Within a couple of days of arrival you should receive customs clearance, mine was cleared before the ship was even unloaded.
  • Collect car from docks, or your agent can arrange delivery to your door.

Then, providing it's over 10 years old, you just need to MOT it, insure it and then register it with DVLA. You will need to fit a rear fog for the MOT, and you will get 6 months tax with the registration.

A question for you guys, I need to install a rear fog light for MOT purposes.

Now, I'm absolutely not going to have one of those stupid box ones hanging under the bumper, no way. Second option is to lose one of the reversing lights and put a red bulb in, but I don't really like that option either.
The tail lights have 2 tail/brake combo bulbs either side. I was thinking that I could set up some wiring/relay business in order to use the 21w side of the inner offside bulb as the fog. It would then operate as a normal tail/brake almost all of the time but be on brightly for the fog leaving 4 other brake light bulbs still working. In fact while braking it would be lit up exactly as it would anyway.

I can't see any reason why this configuration wouldn't be legal, can you?

I'll start with the negative (Sorry). I don't understand why you didn't get a Spec-R? Unless you get some cracking prices on parts, it just seems that mid to long term you are going to come out worse. I'm talking financially not just about the badge.

I know what I'm getting into.

S15 SR20DET is more powerful than the S14's variant for a start (so S15 engine's have a premium). I assume you are going to need AT LEAST a GT28RS to get to 325bhp.

Motor is the same, extra power is just from more boost and better IC. I will have a nice turbo/FMIC/nistune anyway. Btw you don't need a disco for 325, the s15 t28r will do it. I have some plans for something more experimental though.

You'll need all the electronic gubbins as well, you might need a custom exhaust.

Zenki S14 ECU with nistune board, easily done. Exhaust I already have, but only the rear section is s15 specific.

Different diff.

Helical not really for me, it will have a clutch type diff no doubt about it.

More bracing (Drifters comment that the S15 Spec R feels like an S14 with a cage).

They are slightly delusional IMO. As I said though it's all bolt on, if I can pick up the bits I will fit them.

Better brakes.

Sumitomo 4 pots are 10 a penny, not a big deal at all.

Better gearbox (Some think the 6 speed is weaker though).

It is weaker, no doubt about it. I don't care about 6 speed nor do you need it with a torquey engine.

Has a body kit (Which also means you'd probably need a paint job)

Actually Spec-R does not come with any aero as standard, the options are exactly the same as Spec-S

Let me say here.. I LOVE S15's. I've had S13/S14a myself, a long time member of SXOC, a (probably 'ex' now lol) committee member is sitting about 15 metres away from me at the moment. Are you sure you worked out the price difference correctly?

Quite sure. Oh and I've been on SXOC, the place is a ghost town.

BTW: Look to sell the N/A engine to someone in the Primera Clubs.

Already have an interested buyer, also there are significant differences between the RWD and FWD SR's

All that aside:

I'd work on suspension first. Coils (or something milder like tein replacements), locking collars (MASSIVE difference) and possibly some ARB's.
Brakes next. Obviously you are in 300ZX circles, so that should be a nice cheap upgrade to 4 pots.
Engine last. You might actual find it's cheaper to get something like an LS1 V8 in there.

That is exactly the plan, Full adjustable arms is pretty much a requirement though, and a thirsty V8 is a no-go for what will be a daily driver. Plan/order is irrelevant though, it won't get put into use until it's fully up to spec.

Make a plan Clarkey... I've lost count of the number of years said committee member has his S15 sat in a garage undergoing work, dipping, resprays, more stripdowns, more work, quick release fronts, tubbing arches etc etc... and not to actually drive it.

Also.. pics.. I demand more sexy pics.

They will come when there is more progress.

p.s. Forgot to say, get that underside protected asap, or your investment will be looking pretty bad really quick. (I'm guessing you have done this before.. but just in case).

Waiting for my delivery from Bilt Hamber

Oh, and no RB for me. If I were going to put a boat anchor of an engine in, it would be a 1JZ. When I find a good SR20DET I will buy, they are not easy to find though.

Thanks for the advice re. the lights, I will go ahead with that plan :)

Quite. I won't lie though, I will miss the inline 6 sound. I have nothing against cross brand engine swaps though and would always choose a JZ over an RB. There is a big weight difference though, all alu 4 pot vs cast 6 pot, and the front axle is set back quite a way on an S chassis compared with a BMW for example, 6pot just doesn't really work out too favourably.

@Berger, yeah will continue to use the bmw until this is complete, there's no rush.

Fog switch arrived so will try to crack on with that tonight, expecting some more stuff to arrive today also.

Almost impulse bought a set of HSD DT last night, I have the posh monotube ones on the e36 though and it just doesn't sit right with me to have an inferior product on this car. I will hold out for a good deal on those. I want to avoid buying new tbh, did that last time and though you get 12mo warranty that way, they only start going wrong outside of that anyway.

Well, I ditched the hamburger, took ages in the end, the glue was a PITA.

What do you think?

Also did some more claying and while doing that, the delivery guy showed up with this :)

Earlier on, while fixing the battery charger, the sun was shining directly onto the front of the car. I noticed a fair bit of stone rash on it so I might send that to the paint shop and have it repainted. I need the skirts doing and want the headlight lenses clearcoated too so could be added to the list. That's one of the great things about having a black one, it isn't even metallic so I have no worries about colour match, pearl would be a nightmare.
