NASCAR 2013 Sprint Cup season (other series discussion welcome!)

True enough, though the actions of MWR allowed for Logano to overtake Gordon in the points, and thus knock him out of the chase. I agree though that this season he's not exactly performed well enough to justify being included. I just think it a shame that if MWR had not acted the way they did, Logano wouldn't have had the points. MWR get penalised for their actions, but the ripple is not followed as Nascar only look at the incident, and not the effects.

Second wild-card would have put him in the Chase regardless, at the expense of Ryan Newman. I don't like Joey Logano (he's an arrogant brat and wrecked Hamlin at Fontana, putting him out for several races) but I have to give him credit for running up front in the second half of the season to secure a Chase spot. This time his win was straight-up, no rainout, no moving someone out of the way; and his average finishing position is much better (reflected by the eight top-5 finishes). I expected the opposite to happen based on what I've seen of Logano in the past.

Ty Norris ordered Brian Vickers to pit, allowing Logano to get the points needed to qualify for the chase on points, and for truex to get the second wildcard.

After coming back from two laps down, Gordon raced his way back into the top 10 in points until Vickers pitted. Ultimately, Gordon finished 11th in points, just one point behind Logano. Had Gordon finished 10th in points, he'd be in the Chase; instead he's out. In making the penalty ruling, NASCAR President Mike Helton said Gordon's situation was not taken into account. "We simply look at the incident and react to the incident, and whatever our reaction may create that has a ripple effect to it, as well, is what it is," said Helton when asked why Gordon wasn't reinstated into the Chase. "But our focus is around the incident and what we were going to do to react around it, not the ripple effect of the incident or the ripple effect of our reaction." Clearly, that explanation didn't sit well with Gordon or his fans.

The thing is, that kind of "team order" has happened numerous times without penalty in Nascar. Logano had the Michigan win anyway which would have decided the tiebreaker with Gordon had they finished with equal points. Anything more than that is speculation, just like figuring out the race outcome without some of the yellows.

More cheating uncovered at Richmond International Raceway. This time it involves Joey Logano and the No. 22 team and could result in another shakeup to the Chase.

New should be announced, in about an hour I think..

Hmm, that might explain how he gained places at the end despite being on old tyres...

From what I understand, it is "inappropriate communication between David Gilliland's No. 38 team and Joey Logano's No. 22 team that helped Logano earn final spot in Chase for Sprint Cup."

Looks like Jeff Gordon is in thanks to the above investigation, so the Chase will consist of 13 drivers for the first time. Logano starts from pole position at Chicagoland Speedway.

Matt Kenseth won the Chicagoland chase opener, with his Gibbs teammate Kyle Busch finishing second - they are now 1-2 in the championship. Busch narrowly missed a weekend sweep of all 3 Nascar touring series, having won the Nationwide and Truck races decisively.

Points standings:

1) Matt Kenseth 2063
2) Kyle Busch 2055
3) Jimmie Johnson 2052
4) Kevin Harvick 2048
5) Carl Edwards 2040
6) Kurt Busch 2040
7) Jeff Gordon 2039
8) Ryan Newman 2035
9) Clint Bowyer 2035
10) Kasey Kahne 2032
11) Greg Biffle 2032
12) Joey Logano 2011
13) Dale Earnhardt Jr 2010

End of an era. Never thought I'd see the day that NAPA and Mikey Waltrip would part ways.

So, how long before the latest addition to the NASCAR rulebook gets ignored?

"NASCAR requires its competitors to race at 100 percent of their ability with the goal of achieving their best possible finishing position in an event."

If NASCAR think that multi-car teams are going to send their drivers out with orders to only help themselves and not each other then they're puddled. Hell, I remember times under the older points system (Winston Cup era) where a team would field a start-and-park car in the final round because their championship leading driver only needed something like a 39th place finish to win the title, and that meant one car was immediately out of the equation.

Truck series regular Ryan Blaney took his first Nationwide win at Kentucky, while Austin Dillon gained a few points on Sam Hornish Jr for the championship. Matt Kenseth took his second successive Sprint Cup victory (his seventh of the year) at New Hampshire, closely trailed by his JGR teammate Kyle Busch. The pair remain first and second in the points standings.

Jimmie Johnson took his fifth Sprint Cup victory of the year at Dover, moving him to third in the standings. Joey Logano picked up his fourth consecutive Dover Nationwide series win, dominating the race (at one point, only he and Kyle Larson were on the lead lap).

Well, Kansas once again turned into a caution-fest. Kevin Harvick (who won the race) complained about the track surface.

http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-me...urface-as-source-of-tire-issues-goodyear.html

"I think the issue is the pavement and the things they keep repaving these race tracks with that put Goodyear in a box," race-winner Kevin Harvick said.

"It's not Goodyear's fault; they have to make a tire that's not going to blow out. So when you're running an average of 187 or 185, whatever the average speed is, they have to make the tire durable."

Four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon called the racing surfaces on newly paved tracks "too smooth."

"We don't want bumps," Gordon said. "I'm not talking about bumps. I'm talking about the abrasiveness of the race track. It doesn't dissipate heat, doesn't wear the tires … all it does is cause friction and heat and failures and then Goodyear has to build a very hard, durable tire."

Sprint Cup standings: Kenseth 2183, Johnson 2180, Harvick 2158, Gordon 2151, Kyle Busch 2148, Greg Biffle 2139, Kurt Busch 2136, Dale Earnhardt Jr 2129, Clint Bowyer 2128, Joey Logano 2124, Carl Edwards 2123, Ryan Newman 2110, Kasey Kahne 2100.

The Nascar Nationwide event was won by Matt Kenseth.

I was rather amused by Kyle Busch's comment when his spotter informed him that the caution was out "yeah right".. kinda stating the obvious really..

Brad Keselowski made up for his poor 2013 Cup season by snatching a win in the closing stages of the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte. Title contenders Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson finished 3rd/4th respectively, meaning that Kenseth's advantage is 4 points going into Talladega.

In the Nationwide series (also at Charlotte), Austin Dillon maintained an 8 point lead over Sam Hornish Jr, by finishing second to Kyle Busch in the Dollar General 300. Dillon has yet to win a race this year, despite taking seven pole positions.

Jamie McMurray took his first win since 2010 at Talladega, with Kyle Busch being the highest-placed Chase driver in 5th. Jimmie Johnson (2254 points) holds a 4 point lead in the standings over Matt Kenseth. Kyle Busch is a further 22 points back.

Brian Vickers will sit out the remainder of the Sprint Cup season due to injury, Elliott Sadler was chosen to replace to him at MWR for the remaining races. (http://www.sbnation.com/nascar/2013...t-sadler-michael-waltrip-racing-brian-vickers)
