NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

I am still getting backlight bleed on mine after 3 days of use or so,

Brilliant monitor besides the bleed, although if it doesn't correct itself soon I might be getting in touch with NEC to see if I can get a replacement in.,

Should I get in touch with them and let them know I might be wanting a replacement or should I just leave it till next week (over a week since delivery) and hope for the best on the bleed fixing itself.

cheers,

hey igors,

Great review mate. realy have made me want this monitor . im waiting on OCUK to get them back into stock. i was just wondering . if you could Prove somthing to my self . im going to be useing this monitor 80% for photoshop and flash. and the work space is the resson why im going with the wide screen models. could you have the time , could you display this picture in photoshop at 100% and take a picture.http://www.randomladders.com/img/nec_test.jpg at home i am currently on a 15 inch widescreen, its very hard to visualise this as in my office i use a 17 inch. this would help me a lot and make it worth the wait. thanks a lot .

Gaah just spoke to NEC and stock hasn't arrived yet. However the lady said it would be tommorrow or the day after and remembered that mine was to be tested for bleed so may take a day or so later.

*Patience mode, on*
One user contacted NEC (today) in order to arrange the monitor swap and it seems that he was really impressed with their support & the monitor. He has one dead pixel (top right corner) and "annoying" backlight bleed. Here is the original transcript from him:
Just got off the phone to NEC Support (08701 201160). The representative I spoke to gets a score of 12 out of 10 for helping me out; she immediatley DOA 'ed the monitor and arranged for a brand new replacement to be shipped to my business address within the next two working days. It would then be up to me to call DHL and arrange collection of the faulty monitor, at my discretion, using the reference number she provided. With service like this it just goes to show we've all made a wise choice in our purchase of this screen; whether faulty or not!
It seems that they have the stock now, so people who opted for RMA should expect their replacement shortly (hopefully by the close of this working week).

crayz-walz,
I use a 20" wide Screen LCD at work (Apple Cinema Display), if you're worried about the screen size for use in photoshop, then don't, it's fine ;). I spend all day retouching on it, if you're truely fussy about colour (pre-press for example) then you'll need a hardware calibrator.

Wow, that is a lot of space! Thanks for the great indepth review and help Igor. Not that I've asked you anything, but reading your answers to others.

Thats my next wallet breaking purchase sorted.

I bought one o these monitors last week, and to be honest I was disappointed with the amount of what I perceived to be 'backlight bleed'.

However this was only noticable in a totally dark room, and I simply cannot fault the clarity and vibrance of the image! :) Games are awesome too, and I'm playing through Half Life 2 again simply because it's so much better in widescreen!

Happily I am pleased to report that this 'backlight bleed' appears to be diminishing with every day that passes, so for those of you that receive a monitor with the aforementioned characteristic, my advice is 'give it a chance', as recommended by many others in this thread.

Now I've podded out £400+ on this screen, it'll be just my luck that it goes onto special offer this week, at a lower price! Regardless, it was money well spent.

It's arrived! Should be interesting getting it home on the train in rush hour ... :D
lol ... just don't shake the monitor box too much ;) Transport the monitor "gently".

Just noticed your signature. You have some pretty things there ;) They should complement the monitor nicely.

Well, got the NEC back last night and started to have a fiddle. Loaded the inf file and the ICC file and went from there. The ICC file quickly got dumped as it washed the screen out...far too bright. Next used the Opti-cal spyder to give it some better adjustment. This wasn't a great success as it likes to be set to 6500, as this is the native setting it greys out the RGB sliders so adjustments were very limited, in the end I gave up and set it visually, put the advanced DV on, sharpness, brightness both the 50, in gaming mode. Played a bit of Quake 4 multi to adjust the colours...it's going to take a while to adjust as it just seems too bright and saturated compared to the Iiyama CRT i've come from. Next checked for Backlight bleed....top left, top right and lower left, at this point I decided to come here for suggestions on colour etc and guess what? The monitor went dead! Tried re-booting, no go, changed DVI input, no...analog...no. Power was getting to tne monitor as the blue light comes on, the screen lights for about a second then goes again. Tried my old Iiyama and it works ok....what a PITA.

That's such a bummer :( Did you try to flick the "vacation" switch off/on while the monitor is running ?
