NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

oooh baby

OK.... I'm SERIOUSLY impressed

It looks about twice the size of my old 17" CRT and boy, what a picture!! I fired up Firefox(!) and the bright white background was like looking at the sun

Not done any geeky tests yet, no obvious stuck clusters, bit of backlight bleed in bottom two corners but I'll give it a while to burn in as suggested.

Text is razor sharp, best I've ever seen TBH (and I've seen a few monitors in my time!) WoW was, well, wow frankly :D

Screen reflection question? Well, straight out of the box (i.e. off) looked even more reflective than my CRT (which was a bit worrying) but once turned on the picture/colours are so ******* brillant it's a plus in my book.

No funny sounds with it on - not turned it off yet !

Serial number begins 621 for all those interested.

To any doubters? Grab one, seriously, I'm one happy bunny :)

Hah I was exactly the same, congrats mate and enjoy your new monitor! :D

To answer your questions ATI...

This is the first 20" TFT I've seen in detail, seen many in retail but obviously not closey examined.

I'm a software engineer and geek so yeah, I seen/used a hundred odd TFT's I reckon! We mainly use Viewsonics at work - some good, some really quite bad IMO.

The sharpest work based TFT I'd seen before was a Philips 17" (donno model not that new) but I'd say this is even better for standard desktop Windows. Gaming? still only played WoW (trying to reach lvl 60!) - will try and do HF2/BF2 testing tommorow for you ;)

Still can't get over how crisp everything is compared to old CRT, it's like a reallly expensive pair of glasses :D

@ unclepablo

many thanks for that, please let me know how u get on with the games?

also the other main thing for me as text as i,m also a programmer so you can understand the importance of that?

how would you rate this tft for text and does it irretate your eye in anyway or long periods of time?

This is the best screen I have seen for text. There is no haze that is on every other TFT monitor I have seen and the clarity is very impressive. I program and that was one of the key reasons for buying this screen.

@kreeee

cheers for that. have you tried it with any games yet?
Yes. I have used it for various games on my 360 and on the PC:

CoD2
StarCraft ( ;) )
C&C
Counter strike source/HL2
Quake3 (an important one)
farcry
doom3
others I can't remember atm.

The monitor performed superbly. There was no noticeable ghosting unlike on the VS 2025 and in farcry the initial outdoor level looked fantastic. I highly recommend it.

Did u get a stutter at 1680 x 1050 with COD2?? I do :(

May I ask what graphics card you have?

Im running everthing @ 1680 x 1050 res now, 4xAA 16xAF, BF2 has never looked better! That's using a 7950 GX2. ;)
Im on my third panel now, 1st one had a grey blob on the screen so they repaired that and put a new panel in, only problem was they bent all the casing in the process too  so I phoned up NEC again and they sent me out a completely new monitor and this one seems ok (3rd time lucky).
Some might call me picky but when your paying £400 for a monitor I want it to be perfect.

Glad to hear, and @ £400 I'd want it perfect too ;)

BF2 is fine on my pc at max everything it's COD2 I can't play at full native res :(

Worked out that if I turn COD2 down to directX 7 I can play at 1680 x 1050 extra is set too and it plays and looks wicked :D need a new card I suppose, but thats not going to happen until DX10 around the start of next year!!

Hello, i have this morning had a major fall out with my monitor. after like 20 seconds of being on it blacked out and white dots ran up and down the screen. so i cycled the power and as anyone who own's this monitor will know the power it fussy and needs to be left off for at lest 20 min's before you try to do anything with it again. i tested it again switched it on . got to windows desktop and it did the same thing black white dots :| . ive tested it 10 times and its done it every time . there is a buzzing sound coming from the top of it when the power is on. im very disapointed and im wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

craig.

I did get the buzzing for the first couple off days of having it. Then it faded and can only just hear it from the back of the display.

Not had any problems so far other than that though. "Touches head"

Hi lads,

As we all know our NEC's have USB on the left of the panel, how do you get your pc to see them?

Trying to get a file on my 1gb usb stick via the screen but its not picking it up?

any advice?

cheers ;)

Man, what rollercoaster of a thread this is :p

I've got this monitor along with a couple of others on my shortlist to replace my old crt.....so I assume the problems encountered was because of a bad batch and it should be safe to buy now? apart from the usual risks of course

6800GT @ 415//1150
3500+ newcastle AMD64 @ 2.55Ghz
2GB RAM

Runs fine but with no AA.

Hmmm well I ended up setting DX to version 7 within the graphics option and I can now play at Native with x2 AA and video settings at 'extra' looks fantastice to me and I haven't stopped playing it all weekend now :D thanks for the answer though ;)

Oohs & ahhs

For what it's worth:

I just got back from my Clan's annual LAN & my NEC drew several 'nice monitor' favourable comments. The guy sat next to me is in the market for a new monitor & said he would pick the NEC over a Dell 24" that was also there.
