My fiesta is being plagued by a problem which was resolved about 2 years ago and despite it being a good runner, the 142k on the clock has taken its toll.

Looking to replace it but not sure if to go Petrol or Diesel. I do about 7k miles per year for work and add another 7-8k for pleasure so we'll say 15k a year.

So Petrol/Diesel?

Depends on the car really. 15k is enough to consider a diesel. In fact I chose a diesel for my daily workhorse and I do roughly the same mileage.

What is the budget and what kind of cars are you looking at?

Fuel wouldn't be the first consideration I had, what do you actually like and for what kind of budget?

My initial idea is to make a solid choice on fuel, then I can narrow down the list of cars.

As it happens, the wife and I are very keep on the 1.4T Meriva and in terms of budget, no more than 6.5k, 7k at a push but it'd have to be the right car at the top end of the budget!

I should also point out this will be a family car and needs to last the same amount of time as my fiesta, 5-6 years.

My son is starting school next year and with the addition of friends, clubs and after school activities, we've also discussed a 7 seater - there may also be a benefit to this with a disabled family member but again, petrol/diesel.

Petrol is the safer choice really, but you'll likely have a wider selection of cars if you go diesel so I wouldn't rule it out.

The Meriva is a pretty horrible little car tbh, something like an Octavia not appeal? The C Max is a reasonable car too and gives you the jacked up looks etc

What makes you say that?

Need something with good visibility and is child friendly. The reason we like the Meriva is the design of the doors.

How many of your miles will be motorway/dual carriageway?

Unsure really. There maybe a few (3-4) times a year we'll head north (b'ham/Manchester) and maybe couple times a month we'll head to Cribbs Causway, about 30-40 mins down the M4.

Reason I ask is that if it was me, I'd need to do lots of motorway miles to consider a diesel. And that's the main reason why the car I got 5 weeks ago is a petrol.

Plus diesels have extra (expensive) things on them that can, and do go wrong, when compared to petrols.

A na 1.4 or tdci clearly isn't the equivalent of a petrol 1.4t.....it'll be more in line with a 2 litre non blown car.

A car with 200bhp is clearly going to be quicker than the same size and weight of car with 140bhp which in turn clearly quicker than one with 90bhp, the engine size or fuel type is largely irrelevant
