Need a new car....

He's not - you are.

Sorry, but that's not the point at all - he's totally missed it and your post ads no value!

My 1.4tdci drives well. I enjoy driving it and its not missed a beat. What I'm not going to do it swap it for a ****** 1.4i engine which doesn't drive the same. I'm not going to loose out on the torque/acceleration.

I've driven both a 1.4i and 1.6i engine and they're flat, sluggish and not what I'm looking for. The reference to the 1.4T engine is that it would be a better, quicker and nicer drive than a 1.4/1.6 and the only option if looking to move from a diesel.

If I can't find a nice petrol, diesel will simply have to do.

Thoughts on this one?

I'd consider obvious options like a ford mondeo estate or toyota avensis estate. Your son & his stuff (bikes etc) are only going to grow larger during the 6 years, and the Meriva may well start to feel a little cramped by the time you swap. Since you do only have one child (from what I can see in this thread), I can't see the point in buying a 7 seater.

The bonus to a 7 seater is a disabled family member, its a complicated situation but there could well be a use for it later on. Mother-in-law's eyes are getting worse which may warrant its purpose!

The Toyota isn't a bad idea actually, one I'd not considered!

Maybe a stupid question, but how would the two extra seats help her?

I'm not sure how I can be clearer than I already have been.

My sole point is/was that you should be focusing on the power output of the engine and not the size of the thing. It matters not whether it's a 1.0t, a 2.0na, 2.0t, petrol or diesel the only thing that actually matters is how much power it has.

Anyway. The tourans are pretty decent, but that's a fairly old car compared to what you'll be able to buy in budget from other manufacturers. You also need to check what output that 1.4t has, if it's the turbocharged version it'll only have circa 120bhp which isn't really very much to lug around a car of that size so you'd need to drive the thing to see how it felt. If it's the twincharged, 160/170bhp version then I just wouldn't touch it.

toyota verso s (i think its called) and the yaris verso are really roomy and easy to get into and get out of. not quite a 7 seater but loads of space.

Pretty horrific cars all round.

If you were going to consider something of the likes of that you'd be better off with a Chevy cruze, they're borderline tolerable, good value and of reasonable size

The captiva or trax arent the worst cars in the world either (just vauxhalls in a dress), think the smaller trax is too new for your budget though

The vauxhalls at this price will be junk.

Do you really really need 7 seats? So much so that it wouldn't be easier just to hire one every now and again. It'll severely limit your options.

Maybe but the 1.4Ts I've been look at don't seem to be basic specs.

Diesel S-Max?

Are diesels still worth buying considering the government's U Turn on their "diesels are better" comments? I'd personally prefer a diesel but dont want to be stuck if they get penalised!

Couldn't comment on the risk of buying a diesel. The reason I said diesel is because the petrol variants are the 2.0 or 2.5t. Both will be bad on fuel in a car that size for 15k per year

Honestly can't find anything appealing apart from the 1.4T Meriva and the 1.8TDCi C-Max. Looks like I'm getting another diesel!

Why the 1.8TDCI? I believe the 2.0TDCI is a newer better engine. Also in the C-Max the 2.0 petrol won't be bad. I had it in a standard 2005 Focus and it was reasonably quick and returned 40mpg on mainly A-roads and motorway driving. It wasn't abysmal in town either.

The 1.8 tdcI is a rough but fafairly reliable thing. Honestly at least have a look at the Chevrolet's, they theare cheap but aacceptable
