Need for Speed: Shift 2: Unleashed

Hate shift. They call it a sim but its not and never will be. They had the sense of speed and dramatics but the driving was poor otherwise. Couldn't get used to it at all.

This will be another rushed out crappy game. They should sell off the visual aspects to the likes of Simbin or iRacing and let them do the rest.

rushed out? its been in development for ages almost since shift was released so it will have over a years development time and the majority of the work (graphics engine etc will no doubt be shift1 but with updated visuals) which is a lot of time saved

How can any racing GAME ever be described as a sim?? I never get how people go on about the physics not being realistic and whatever but it is a computer game with gameplay that has to be enjoyed by people of all ages and skills. FGS you can't even begin to describe iracing or whatever as a sim. Shift was a lot more "sim" than any previous NFS GAME and the physics never were and are never gonna be "perfect" as it's probably not possible. There are tons of config variables and wotnot that could very well have been "dumbed-down" at the last minute when they decided that 99% of the buying public might be put off by it being too hard to control or something.

You think it's possible that they spent all that development time and money creating simulation physics just to turn it off last minute because they didn't understand their own audience up until that point? Would it not make sense to just leave it in as a 'hardcore mode'?

I'll make it clear, Shift never had decent simulation physics, ever. It's not that the physics are dumbed down, it's that they don't accurately reflect reality.

There is a lot you can learn about motor racing using a real sim. Sims never will be perfect, nobody said they were, but the idea with a sim is that they simulate the physics of the real world as best they can given the hardware.

Shift tried to make a motor racing game dressed up like a sim, the intention was never to attempt to replicate what happens in the real world but to give people a sense of what it is to be part of it all. An admirable design philosophy, I have no problem with somebody designing a game to be played by all skill types, it would just be nice if Shift catered for the simmers and not just the more casual gamers.

First game was amazing with x360pad, totally loved it on my PC and actually finished it (seen credits and all) !
Cannot say that about many racing games.

Looking forward to this - holy hell you will actually see the helmet. Man, immersion +10

The trouble was, Shift managed neither.

It didn't have arcade physics, it just had crap physics. GRID is a brilliant example of arcade physics done well. It's easy to play but the cars still feel like you're steering them from the front wheels, even if they do seem to have infinite grip sometimes.

Shift never felt like you were steering at all, it felt like you were pivoting the car around the middle. Just rubbish. It was vaguely playable from the interior view but only because that view made it harder to notice the way the cars handled.

Pff Shift was boring just any other racing game with fancy gfx. Would love to see a proper brisca f1 game come out. Only thing that came out was a mod for nascar heat years ago.

your boring me please move along :D

seriously though with how popular the ocuk lap competitions were i can see shift 2 beeing a lot of fun especially now it has the autoblog thing sharing best laptimes etc from within the game

I can't wait for this!

I hope it has a better multiplayer system though. Need lobbies/browser at least!

It looks good, just like the last game.

I just hope the handling isn't as 'arcadey' as the first. Taking hairpins at 100mph or whatever speeds you can do it, is just not fun imo!

people saying that video looks touched up forget just how good shift still looks for a game of its age

yea i did 1 drift race and avoided any more :D

sounds like they want to go a bit more sim like anyway and the game has dropped the NFS title to go it alone which hopefully means crap like drifting is gone and they are trying to be more like forza

Wasn't there a video interview where Shift's producer Patrick Soderlund stated that's what happened ?

Whether you want to believe him is up for debate though...

Anyway, isn't there an arcade & so-called sim (Elite) mode in Shift 2 ?

Just realised what track those cars where on in the trailer. Its Bathurst, one of the greatest racing tracks ever!
