Need for Speed: Shift 2: Unleashed

I didn't read it that way. I took it that he's using 'GT5' & 'your favorite PC sim' as something to grade the handling against.

At least it still gives us an idea of what to expect, and what not to.

Still, Dirt 2 isn't sim-like, esp when compared to RBR, but it's great fun to drive with a wheel regardless.

Hopefully Shift 2 will be as well once the modders do their stuff, and should keep me going until GTR 3 or rFactor 2 makes an appearance.

Seems the terrible central pivot oversteering is still in the game, but 'Elite Mode' shown in the second video looks very promising and seems to eradicate it.

It's definitely still there, it just looks like that car is set up for loads of understeer, but that pivot still makes an appearance. Shame, if they had bothered to correct a few fundamental flaws with the original game they could have catered for the simmers looking for a little light hearted pick up and race gaming as well as the casuals.

That reviewer named GT5 as a sim experience. Anything he said after that wasn't worth reading.
He said that some may consider GT5 as full on sim and that PC gamers expect even more, but Shift doesn't even challenge either Forza or GT5.

Also:
There’s a lot of eyes on Shift 2 after the series’ first title, billed as a realistic simulator, was highly criticized by “sim racers” for its too-friendly physics. According to EA’s marketing, these issues have been addressed, going so far as to call it “the most realistic racer ever”.
Utter nonsense. I wish EA would just come clean and stop with this ridiculous masquerade. Cleary what they mean by a realistic racer is that it's intended to be immersive, they need to stop hiding behind this claim every time physics are brought up, as if they are one and the same.

im happy with something as GOOD as Forza.

The hardcore sims in PC are great but they dont offer the "experince" of playing a game imo.

GT and FORZA are very immerversive with the carear modes. If shift is at least on par with forza handling wise im happy. If its below i will cancel my order

I can be as sniffy about sims as anyone else... and I love iRacing (well it's cars, not the service) and NKPro. But my favourite and most satisfying sim racing experience ever is currently lapping GT5's Nordschleife in some of the better cars. It really is a sim, and a very satisfying one at times. It's just that they buried that satisfaction under a heap of annoying superficial gameplay in order to meet the franchise's mainstream expectations.

Whether you agree with that or not, GT5's overall driving model is much more satisfying than Shift1's, and although I like a lot of Shift2's features (eg night racing) I'm definitely not paying full price for it.

Well, probably. Steam means it only takes a moment of weakness and optimism to overcome pessimistic reality. :-)

Didnt take long to be on torrents. Saw it showing as being on last night.

Still. I dont think the game will be that good. Shift was terrible and the menus and advancement was badly done imo.

Not at the moment. It's on other download services like Direct2Drive, GamesPlanet, etc... though

If you want to mod it, you'd be better buying the disc version.

And going by the people over at NoGrip that already have their copy, it's going to need modded to get the best from it, just like the first one.

GT5s driving model isn't even close to how a real car handles.

As long as this game is fun I couldn't give a monkeys if the 'feel' isn't 100% accurate, give me a decent race decent gfx and a plethora of options and I'll be happy. The game cost just over £20 from EA Store+Voucher+Discount and I'm 99% sure it will provide a lot of value for money, look forward to some OcUK race malarkay like with F1.

Looked at some comparison shots between Shift 1 and 2 on PC and Shift 2 looks noticeably worse. Which is worrying.

Can you post a link to them ?

The screens here don't look any worse than Shift 1. It is only 4 of them though. :

If anything they look a bit better, close to what a modded Shift 1 looks like.

Although the cars' paintwork is far too reflective at acute angles / fresnel effect's too strong imho.

Still looks good though.

Not too much difference between the track pics. If anything the 2nd one looks like Shift 1 with the 'no bling' mod applied. Not a bad thing imho, but everyone's different.

The cockpit shot is pretty poor though. Although again the 2nd image looks like how I remember stock Shift 1 looked & the 1st image is how it would look after being modded.

Where did you find the pics ?
