neeeeeeeext? :p

i must admit - i cant see what all the fuss is about, they might have marketed it as a 'sim', but it says NFS on the box - lets face it, its hardly going to be the motoring equivalent of FSX now is it?

marked on its own, its an ok game - its got a bit to do and i am enjoying it so far.
im not really into ultra realistic sims, i would prefer going round a corner sideways at 125mph because, that makes you feel 100 times better than ending up in the tyres because you misjudged a corner

i hate to say it though - i still prefer GRID

Ok, this is going to be my last post on this, as clearly people are missing the point of what I'm saying.

Look, there's nothing wrong with a driving game not being realistic, I like arcade driving games when they are done well. I'm currently loving DIRT 2, it's unashamedly arcade but it feels fantastic, good slidey fun with responsive controls and a great feel to the cars.

Shift fails at being a sim because the physics are crap, which would be fine if it had fun arcadey handling. But it doesn't, it has frustrating controls and a physics model that is difficult to get to grips with not through accuracy or realism but through simply being crap.

The game does have it's good points, I love the cockpit effects, it looks pretty, the sounds are great, and sometimes when it all goes right you can have a genuinely enjoyable race. But that all goes out the window when the physics engine behaves in an utterly bizarre way for no reason whatsoever, and I feel like throwing my controller through the nearest wall.

Roll on Forza 3.

I found the handling a joke, although i changed my settings to those posted previously in here somewhere and has improved it a great deal. Much prefer GRID but this has that certain NFS feel that i've grown to like :D haha.

One thing i have found is that it doesn't quite use SLI properly which is a shame but makes no difference to me and i'm sure will be corrected with a patch/new drivers soon enough.

here's the settings i'm using, it feels more sim than hovercraft arcade type to me.

the driver animations in places seem about 1/4sec slow and the wheel
rotation animation don't match how much i'm turning mine. hopefully
EA will fix those in a patch.

I'd be interested in seeing some videos from the people who reckon they've got the controls sorted and the handling model is fine.

Me driving poorly at The Ring. Fortunately the AI drive even worse, so I don't look too bad. ;-)

I'd spent a lot of time messing about with the Elise just to try and find a control sweet spot. It's not perfect, but it's good enough now that I don't have to worry about it. The car pretty much does what I ask it to now (highly customised G25 and car settings).

There isn't a sim out there I haven't tried, and Shift certainly isn't the best for pure hardcore physics & feedback. But it is the best for dragging me into my monitor by the scruff of the neck and convincing me I'm not sat at a desk.

I think what it does best, thanks to the high level of detail all around the car and track, is give you a genuine sense of speed. Even iRacing, which I have a lot of respect for, fails to manage that (IMO anyway).

i think i'm done with this game now. i've got no chance of beating it by skill alone. it's seems to be a demolition derby now that i'm trying tier5. even with the AI on easy, they just ram you off the track and once you're in the dirt it takes ages to get back on track again and you're way behind. so the chances of getting through the whole field and in contention is nil for someone as crap as me. :D

Some points I would make of the game so far:

1) It doesn't seem to have been well beta tested, loads of people having technical issues with the game itself. Mine has a habit of hardlocking my entire PC.
2) Loading times are quite long when you join/leave a race.
3) For hardcore racing gamers it seems that the controls are a bit off with steering wheel controllers. I personally use my XBOX 360 controller and find it's not too bad with it.
4) Sounds/Visuals imo are great however
5) I like the mix of modes and invitationals etc, and it's nice to be able to customise your cat looks/equipment/configs

I think it will be a much better game after some patches have come out for it.

letting the drivers do the small amount of 2xAA
through nHancer util. once i find a bfg 260 oc2 in stock
any where it's mine! :)

Thanks bud.

When you say letting the drivers do small amountof 2XAA does that mean you have it set to 2XAA in your graphics drivers (display properties)?
Doesnt setting it to 2XAA in the game default it to that setting?
Or am I missing something?

Noticed you're playing at 1680. Presumably thats the native of your monitor?

yeah native. with the nHancer util it says it over-rides any in game AA settings so it uses the drivers own way of doing it rather than letting the game engine do it. or something like that. to me it feels a little smoother while looking the same.

One thing i have found is that it doesn't quite use SLI properly which is a shame but makes no difference to me and i'm sure will be corrected with a patch/new drivers soon enough.

What problems - I take it you're using the GTX295 in your sig?

I had a couple of bluescreens with it yesterday - I'd created my own custom profile for it. But since I set the drivers to let the application decide it's been fine since - though I'm noticing a bit of slowdown now at the start with a 10+ grid now

Is this what you've been seeing?

oh dear

Attempted the tier 2 - mixed series - time attack event and at the 3rd race, my R34 was bouncing all around the track as the stage 2 suspension upgrade I fitted lowered it 1.5 inches. The circuit was quite bumpy and obviously it was bottoming out so i couldnt post a fast time and ultimatly lost the series!

This game could be so good, but the controls just make it to unplayable.
I hope they sort it out as it could be a really good fun racer

im upgrading to a 5850 or 5870 soon, this better smoke it because i hear it has bad performance issues (im still waiting for the game to arrive).
