need new car fed up of this one

It's a month old! You've gone from saying no because you don't like the looks one jot to...well go on then. Your mind is as fickle as the tides :p

a lot can happen in a month, I have undergone a special brain treatment to allow more into my mind.

and the fact I'm stuck as hell on what to get my budget keeps going up and down.
and I like to get info on every eventuality before I buy

I opted for an a3 sline when in a similar position, prices can go above 6k depending on age.

what engine? hows it treating you?

Id say 350z but the boot is probably not big enough for you. It can be a bit lower on he MPG side too depending on how you drive it.

managed to find a 1.8tfsi, theres the more common 2.0tfsi so you'll find a greater selection. So far so good, just need to ensure its been serviced correctly and they're pretty solid. Mines a sTronic, with reasonable spec for the money and fits your requirements I guess.

It depends how new it is, there are two main variations, the 2.0T FSI and the newer 2.0 TSI.

I'm not sure on the specific differences though, but I assume the TSI engines are better and don't have some of the issues the (T)FSI engines had.

If Sirocco's came out when I think they did (2009ish) then they will all be the tsi. They seem to have less issues dealing with increased power through remaps etc and the cam follower problem is, iirc resolved - however they can suffer from failed chain tensioners so replacement should be considered on the early cars.

Tf/si engines also sound like clattering diesel messes at idle, which makes me sad.

I guess its a combination of cam chain rattle and injector noise. But yeah they do sound a bit ropey at idle... Engine in my car is just as bad because of the chain and clickclickclick of the injectors... :(

Ah yes, They are all TSI 1.4/2.0

sat in one at the weekend and loved it, hopefully drive one this weekend.

the 1.4 seems to be a lot cheaper for a low mileage example, from reading remap very well, but have a few known issues

More assumptions!

TFSI engines, apart from some consuming oil are relatively trouble free. They're belt driven so need the belt replaced at correct intervals. There's a timing chain connecting the 2 cams, which does have a tensioner - this can get a bit rattly at startup as the oil pressure comes onto the tensioner, but failures are very rare.

The TSI is chain driven and has a well known, catastrophic, potential for failure of the tensioner. There is however a revised tensioner - if I was buying a TSI I'd budget for a replacement as a peace of mind warranty.

The TSI seems to suffer a bit more with oil consumption than the earlier TFSI. There are plenty of early TFSIs with bad oil consumption but this is often rectified by something as simple as a PCV valve replacement. My TFSI used only a tiny amount but others (mccarf, are you here?) use tons. Subjectively though, I hear more complaints about the TSI engines.

Please, if you dont *know* from experience then just dont post it - all these assumptions posted as well meaning advice dont help anyone.

I don't think it is unreasonable to say that I assume that the newer revision of an engine would be an improvement. If anything I was openly stating that I'm not sure of the differences, and was happy for someone to come and fill in the details... I also pointed out that there is *a* difference, which answered the question about whether or not they have the same engine...

Your posts targeting me are getting more than a little tiring... I've stopped posting pointless assumptions in reply to threads because I'm bored/want more threads to keep an eye on, but it seems like you are homing in on every 'assume' I type... :p

This is the trouble I am having picking a car. My suzuki swift has no known problems

so searching for cars that have known problems just make me panic!

I don't view the tsi as a revision as its a turbo supercharged engine, the tfsi engines are still used in audis despite being current gen so they're both used.

I had the timing chain changed under warranty in my mk6, as mentioned above these are problematic with the tsi nor are they subject to recall.

Tsi reliability isn't really relevant though given the budget.

No it's not, TSI these days is a turbo

Astra VXR?

All have done a reasonable mileage at that price point but you don't spec it has to be low mileage?

I had one for 3 years or so (06 plate). Was a really good car for general use.
Everyone will tell you how much it tramlines into every field but I test drove a Civic Type R (09 plate looking to replace the VXR) and it was a very similar feeling, you just learn how to drive around it.
Civic is a very harsh ride compared to ST/VXR.

The turbo is fun and its pickup pace from any gear was good.
If you are in to modifying cars then the VXR has some well know rear arb mods if I remember correctly that help out with the handling etc.
Also remap+exhaust+inter-cooler = circa 300bhp :D
