need new car fed up of this one

More assumptions!

TFSI engines, apart from some consuming oil are relatively trouble free. They're belt driven so need the belt replaced at correct intervals. There's a timing chain connecting the 2 cams, which does have a tensioner - this can get a bit rattly at startup as the oil pressure comes onto the tensioner, but failures are very rare.

The TSI is chain driven and has a well known, catastrophic, potential for failure of the tensioner. There is however a revised tensioner - if I was buying a TSI I'd budget for a replacement as a peace of mind warranty.

The TSI seems to suffer a bit more with oil consumption than the earlier TFSI. There are plenty of early TFSIs with bad oil consumption but this is often rectified by something as simple as a PCV valve replacement. My TFSI used only a tiny amount but others (mccarf, are you here?) use tons. Subjectively though, I hear more complaints about the TSI engines.

Please, if you dont *know* from experience then just dont post it - all these assumptions posted as well meaning advice dont help anyone.

Hah. Oddly enough I just wrote in the other spec me thread about my dislike for this engine so I'll just link the post rather than write out the same thing twice. Even mentioned you in that post too. Weird.

That's enough for me to write them off then. shame as there are some nice looking cars with those engines in.

I'm swaying away from a focus quite a lot as they are so common

struggling to find anything better than a civic type R Fn2 for the money and mileages that wont potentially explode.

anyone with more info on the astra VXR please step forward and speak up

Anything specific you want to know?
I owned mine from 16,000 to roughly 55,000 miles.

Nothing went wrong with it in that time, just normal servicing etc.
I did let the turbo warm up and cool down as I believe you should with these kind of things.

Took it to central france camping and it was brilliant for that.

I just found it a fun car, very point and squirt, not as involving as the MX5 or S2000 but enjoyable the same.

I had the 19" option wheels and like good tyres so that was circa £130 a corner at the time.
Obviously servicing is reasonable being a Vauxhall.

Can try www.vxronline.co.uk for info which is what I used to be on and was good at the time.

Point and squirt is fine with me, I don't get much back road fun these days!

I have heard the gear boxes can be abit un reliable?
any known problems? I had the 1.9 diesel which just fell apart and left me abit afraid of vauxhalls

I shall have a browse on that forum

Cooper S, just put your bags on the back seat

I would love one, but getting in and out of one is a pain in the arse.

I struggle getting my legs under the steering wheel. I would look past the space issue because they are awesome fun to drive

Spoke to the mrs last night who is also car hunting. we have both been driving sheds for 2 years whilst buying houses/saving for wedding which is all done now.

the new plan is......

I can have a fun more silly car, practicality isn't needed as she is going to get a smaller engine practical car.

so looking at something I can zoom around in.

was thinking maybe an audi tt, mx5 , 350z something fun (RX-8 maybe after some research on engine rebuilds/cost)

got my car valued for PX only worth around 2k

looking to finance 3-4k on top

will still be used for commuting but I am used to a hard/noisy ride so don't worry about that

With your budget, get an MX5. It'll be the best condition car for £5-6k, it won't cost much to run and fun is in its DNA.

Having a look now, I worry it wont have enough POWA, but i am sure the actual ride of it will make up for that.

There's a decent looking one 2 miles from my work so may pop in at lunch and have a browse

The EP3 is currently causing me problems. I don't wish to use it as a daily driver now. I've done 45k miles in it. Going to retire it for weekends and do it up.

If I didn't like it so much, it would make a new car purchase much easier. I have to run two cars because I don't want to get rid. 1st world problems :)

Out of the new options an MX-5 will definately be the cheapest/easiest to maintain and probably the most reliable. They aren't fast in a straight line, but they handle well and are a lot of fun. Especially the mk1. You can also supercharge them for not a huge amount of money. Then they are fast :P

I'd avoid an rx-8 tbh. FAR to much hassle for what they are.

Audi TT is ok, but not exactly exciting.
