Nerds assemble! Raspberry pi close to launch date.

The BBC Micro (model B) is still my favourite computer, so I will find it interesting to program BASIC on an over-powered computer. I know some C as well, so will give that a gander. Although it's for schools mainly, will it be available to the general public? Not a total loss if it isn't available to us as I still have a working Beeb.

available to everyone which is the reason for the massive project potential.

People are working on a simple media os, so basically you turn it on and it iwll be like a google tv or apple tv. That would be well worth it for £25. I'm going to wait until it gets a case and has proven media playing capabilities with a decent GUI. I've always ummed and arred over AppleTV for £99 but always backed out due to the price. If a cased version of this comes out and i can get a working media os on it for less than £40 then it would be an instant buy!

Yep they are porting XBMC which is a very polished product with loads of plugins. Should be pretty damn good if it can play 1080p smooth.

once you add a case ,remote ,power cable , wireless , packaging and a warranty to the pi the $99 apple tv really is decent value for money for just media use !

certainly shows apples buying power and makes me wonder why someone like ZTE who already buy/make bargain price arm boards for their bargain smartphones hasn't made something

obviously the PI is about far more than media but it seems thats what many people on here want it for

Another option I've thought about is to install Fedora Directory Server on it and that can be my LDAP directory for use at work.

I'm not fussed about the lack of a case, if anything it could be a talking point when I'm entertaining guests.

I'm not hugely interested in the media side of it, I want it more for controlling projects and things. I want one now!

Will have to get my head around linux however...

This is a joke right? You've got guests over and you're going to show them a PCB? They won't be coming over to yours again that's for sure.

Well if we're watching a film they'll notice that under the TV and ask about it. I wasn't going to disconnect it and start a conversation on it!

It's a good talking point if they don't know about it. Spreading the word about it may mean an extra child gets one and becomes the next Bill gates :D. Talk about it as much as possible, every kid should have one.

Basically it was a big waste of time getting up and going to the websites. They went down very quickly and the people behind RasberryPi were posting misinformation all the time.

Not the foundations fault that RS and Farnell can't take warnings seriously, but some of the early tweets from the foundation said they couldn't understand why the "register your interest" pages were up and you shouldn't be getting them, then posting that Farnell had run out of them, which is wrong as they haven't even had a shipment of them (they are delayed)

In short it was a waste of time joining the bandwagon.

The foundations own website is so flaky that they took all the content off and put a static page up, promising to put the forums etc back by 6pm. Where are they now? Down the pub.
