Netflix here we go again.

Physical product, commercial property rents, staff costs, utility costs, distribution, etc etc etc.

It just doesn't make sense that streaming costs as much as it does.

I would like new tier based on how much you use the service - say, a cheaper tier for up to 40 hours of content per month, then up to 100, then an unlimited. Thing is, that helps the consumer, not the business.
Bandwidth and storage isn't cheap, they still have building and staff costs, they also pay for their own productions. I'd say combined those costs well outstrip the costs of just needing buildings full of VHS/DVDs other companies paid to make.

I'm not saying I agree with all these price hikes but I don't think it's a simple comparison to the old days

I'd happily get rid of it... Not sure I'll win that fight with the wife and little one so might just knock it down to the ad plan

Agree with this, there must be some pretty heavy costs involved to deliver content on the scale somebody like Netflix does

Every company post Covid has realised we’ll pay whatever they demand.

Yea but who's paying?

I'm not.

I've gotten to the point, not just with Netflix, but anything like this, if I feel the price has to go the point where they are starting to take the **** I simply stop buying/paying.

I don't feel like I'm missing out in life either, if anything the opposite.

Wonder how much they’d save if they moved away from AWS. I’m sure they have volume discounts but would probably still save a couple million going self-hosted (effort aside).

I get it through Sky, is it going up that way as I can’t find anything astound that, I don’t really watch much but the other half does, might make her pay for it

They likely spend several million a year just on researching alternatives to AWS. The reason they are still with AWS is almost certainly because it ends up cheaper in the end.

I run a product powered by AWS and we spend around $25million a year and growing 60% y/y. We've spent a lot of money in both reducing costs and looking at internally hosted solutions.

Beyond cost it is the support and risks that are hard to account for.

Thought I'd try watching a film tonight on Netflix before it's cancelled.. Terminator dark fate.
Well, Netflix can't provide the subs for the Spanish in the film.
The first dodgy copy I've found.. Perfect subtitles.

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

Cancelled yesterday along with Disney+ so we just have Prime now. Wifey has been whining that she wants Sky again but I said over my dead body so don't be surprised if I vanish from the forums!! I got rid of Sky years ago and have never missed it. I don't know why she kicks up such a fuss as the TV is on but she's not watching it because she's always on her phone playing pointless Facebook games.

We subscribed to Peacock for £15 quid for the year that seems to have most of whats on Sky, although you do have to factor in the cost of your VPN and resign yourself to even more ads (normally for medical products that all have a disclaimer at the end 'may cause cancer'). Although we watched Conclave all the way through ad free last night so maybe movies are ad-free.

Most of the 3pm kick offs on a Saturday are on it too

Just get now TV entertainment on an offer then cancel it (as they always offer a big discount)

Literally had now TV entertainment for the past year+ for £2.99 a month.

Basically has most of the SKY stuff (without movies and sports) .

I'm going to go against the trend here but its still incredible value for money.

I can only think the people complaining aren't old enough to remember having to go to a video store, pay what would be in todays money about £5-6 for a film for one night.
You would then need to drop it back the next day.

Age isn't a factor, you can still easily rent a new release film digitally. Unlike some other services, Netflix isn't really in the business of getting the big releases these days unless they've made it themselves so I don't really see a comparison here. The higher up the tiers you go the worse value for money it becomes; £19 just to be able to watch in (relatively unimpressive bitrate) 4K is poor especially when you know you're subsidising their ventures into sports and gaming whether you want them or not.

Wish they all did similar, but wishful thinking. I had now tv as well last year really cheap, but like most streaming services, it soon becomes another one to cancel once you have watched what you want.
I think HBO/max is coming to UK soon, I think that will be a good one as I presume it will have movies as well, but I guess it will be pricey.

Had the email today. They seem to think they are doing me a favour.

'We hope you’re enjoying everything Netflix has to offer. We’re updating your monthly price to £12.99 on 12 March 2025'
