Netflix is now in the UK

I'm confused as to how exactly this particular unblocking service knows you're a paying customer? I mean, they just hand out DNS addresses on the "How to set up" page?

If you configure your router to use those addresses, how on earth do they know that you've paid?

Seems potentially fishy to me.

Because it asks for your email address when you try to access any websites through that dns.

Can you not achieve the same by changing your hosts file tho?

Just went ahead and did it... only updated the DNS settings in the router, and haven't been asked for anything after restarting browser.

Similarly, deleted and re-downloaded Netflix for the Xbox 360, and have access to the full US catalogue now.

The saving grace of the US one is the staggering wealth of Anime. Wow!

Other than that, I assume it would be great if you don't watch many movies but I've seen 95% of anything that appears even remotely interesting. Was hoping for some more horror flicks on the US app, but there ends up being only 1 I haven't seen, as opposed to 2 on the UK one!

Well it seems that unblock-us is actually a proxy, changing the DNS to their servers means they have control over how the name is resolved. That's how it works and thats why they charge money for it.

You enter your email address on their website, so I assume by doing this they now have your IP address of your ISP, they can then only allow access to their proxy or whatever it is if you setup a account with the email address you used and pay the $5.99 a month. Im no expert, far from it. Same sort of thing if you used Open DNS paid for services, even the free open dns if you use it can do content filtering, all based on your IP address.
I didnt change my router dns as i didnt want everything going through their dns, just on the box I trying this out on.

But what you are doing is no better than torrenting it, they don't have the rights to show it over here, they're not doing it out of spite.

Indeed, that's what I was trying to imply.

Netflix is having to negotiate with the Studios for streaming services on a country basis, thus some of what they have in the US catalogue isn't currently, or perhaps never will be, allowed to be shown in this country, or visa-versa.

A loophole like that by not locking down accounts by country, means that they could be in trouble if the Studios get wind of it, as they've breached their contract. This kind of thing is likely to be of far more importance to them and their legal team than if they loose or annoy some subscribers, as it could mean total loss of service from the Studio or big fines.

I'd also add that it seems kind of strange that they haven't locked accounts by country, which is what most online companies these days do.

It's very odd. All I've done is manually set the DNS settings as per their website on the PS3 section. No email supplied. No need to change Netflix or reinstall the app. I've now got US Netflix and can't fathom how they will be able to a) detect I've used 7 days up in a week b) contact me to inform me of this fact.

Yep I'm quite confused as to what will happen. The selection though is much much better. It's a big saving overall. I was going to import Breaking Bad blurays and many other things. Very very happy with the service atm, would be even better if we didn't have to go through this hassle though to get the US content.

Has anyone managed to get unblock-us DNS working on the Wii? It works on my Xbox just fine but with the Wii it's unable to connect to Netflix after the change.

Also what the heck are The Secrets of Nimh and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang doing in the Sci-Fi section?!

Flying car not sci-fi enough for you :p Only kidding - I'm not a moron. *Looks around* :p

This US Netflix is sounds quite good... Anyone able to screenshot the latest releases for the US version?

Can't do the screenies but the latest films I can see are

The Fighter
Troll Hunter
Ip Man 2
Senna
Insidious
Limitless

Basically films which came out about a year ago. Yes you can complain there are obvious omissions but this isn't a national library of films. There is still an awful lot I haven't watched and I'm sure plenty of other people. I have my hands full for months. I didn't have access to Lost when it moved to Sky, so great opportunity for me to finish it amongst other things.
