Netflix to cut streaming quality in Europe for 30 days

What (exactly) will the youtube reduction be ... is this applied on standard 720/1080 videos, and moreover their sound, that are only 126Kb/s anyway ?

Has netflix announced and reduction in productions too ... like the uk soap operas ?

Just received an email from BT tonight which states....

"We’ll keep the UK connected and running

We’re constantly monitoring our broadband network, and have built in more than 10 times the capacity needed for everyday use. We have more than enough to handle the increase in people working from home, and the extra calls people will be making too."

I've still not seen an ISP complain about bandwidth availability.

Imagine people getting annoyed about watching in 1080p instead of 4k while a pandemic is going on around them.

Some seriously stupid and entitled people about :p

That's pretty much the state of far too much of the population these days though unfortunately :(

I watch a lot of YouTube, wouldnt care if it was limited to 480p tbh.

I have a server full of media though, doing my bit to ease stress in the network I guess? :p

So they are really saying is that most of the EUs internet is old\crap.

Being an early adopter has a downside when it comes to infrastructure. What was amazingly advanced at the time sucks donkey balls a few decades later but the upgrade costs for infrastructure already in place can be either too expensive, too unpopular/disruptive or both. Then there's always the issue of the existing system still working so there isn't enough selection pressure to drive an upgrade. It's about profit rather than breeding, but some of the basic concepts of evolution still apply.

Or maybe I am drunk and talking nonsense. I am drunk, so I can't tell if I'm talking nonsense :) It's not good beer, but it's adequate beer.

I like beer.

I heard someone say tonight, completely seriously, that basic precautions don't matter because if you're going to get infected you're going to get infected. These people are dangerous. They're also internally inconsistent because they do things such as looking for oncoming traffic before crossing a road. If they really believed that everything was predetermined and unchangeable, they wouldn't do that.

Companies dont really need video chat, it's nice but I bet most could just use audio instead to save bandwidth.

Might be better actually as then you can work from home in your undies which we all know is the dream.

But you'd need video to confirm to customers that you really wore the undies that you're selling as worn undies!

[magnolia] Not selling your used undies to buy toilet roll? Noob. [/magnolia]

I got that email too good to know I won't be losing my stupendous 33Mb d/l speed anytime soon.

then again ,i can imagine people who still have to work been put out a little ,so on the way back home the shelves are empty at the shops ,then when they get home their streaming is compromised by tens of thousands of deadwood *working*from home :)

edited for spelling ,really need one of those keyboard lights

It's not about that, reducing the quality fine but not reducing the monthly fee to reflect that.

That's the problem.

It could be argued that the price is now justified because people will be consuming more content than ever. The cost of binge watchers was probably offset by people who watch very little. Now the spread of consumption will be greater.

(I wouldn't mind a cut in fees tho)

Amazon now (potentially) following suit.

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.p...agrees-to-reduce-video-streaming-quality.html

Just cancelled my Netflix subscription. What's the betting they hope people forget about them lowering the quality and make it permanent while still charging the same prices.

Of course, just encouraging them to do other things thinking everyone will turn a blind eye.

Netflix is great but they are slow starting to increase their prices and looking whats on there now. Dumping all sorts of crap just to fill their library against the up coming competition.

Pretty much this. It sets a dangerous precedent.

Fair enough if they have to drop quality so the networks can cope. But they should also compensate their customers much like sky are willing to do.

Not everyone just watches Netflix there are alternatives available.

YouTube, amazon, sky, music, gaming, hobbies, etc.

I pay for prime, I also pay for youtube premium too. I have the full sky package in 2 rooms, uhd sky q, sports and cinema. So if they were all to cut their price by say even 10% it all adds up to compensate for the reduction in service.

Sky is the only one that has done so.

Asda today donated £5 million to charity. I wouldn't mind if Netflix done the same rather than pocket it.

Are you comparing this to the lack of content available on sky sports? It's not the same at all.

What would you say is the percentage drop in visual quality as a result of this and what reduction do you think you should be offered?

Read the thread before posting, it's a good way to avoid looking foolish.

Nobody is complaining about them reducing the quality of the premium service for a month due to the pandemic, in fact most are saying it's a good idea and rightly so. The complaint is that they aren't reducing the price of the premium service for said month.

To use an analogy: If the milk man tells me he can only bring me 3/4 as much milk this month due to increased demand for deliveries I'd be fine with that as I'm sure more people are needing to have it delivered right now, but if he tried to charge me the regular price for only 3/4 I'd refuse to pay it. That's effectively what Netflix are doing here, it's just because they charge a month in advance nobody can refuse to pay regular price for 3/4.
