so I went and bought a shiney new router with USB adaptor.

from OCUK:
Netgear DG834N 270Mbps ADSL2+ Modem/Router & WN121T Wireless Networking Bundle.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-130-NG&groupid=46&catid=116&subcat=143

got it into my lovely new (old) house. to save me running cables everywhere I thought this would be a good solution.

now. I setup the router using a temp cable.
but when I use the wireless adaptor I get a problem.

I connect the adaptor.
I scan for a network. it finds the network.
I click connect.
it asks for my password.
i enter said WPA+xxyz+zaabbcc encryprtion passkey (or whatever the security type is, silly names honsetly!!!)
it tries to connect.
then the network I could see dissapears. and it doesnt connect.

I tried using the windows xp built in wireless. didnt like it.
I tried using purely netgear software. didnt like it.

I tried disabling the onboard network port, so no interferrence. didnt work.

not sure what the problem is really. all works fine with a cable attached.

anyone got any ideas?

that would be a good idea :)

will try it in 2 hours when I get home.

in all honesty I might have tried that. but will post back with results soon.

edit:

ultimately, why would the encryption be getting in the way?

Did you add the device name & MAC address in the trusted wireless stations under the wireless access list ??

Like in this pic

hmm. I didnt do that.

I thought it automatically recognised the fact.

I will also look into that. and will post my findings (hopefully via brain cooking Ntype transmissions! :) )

Mine will show them in the available wireless stations list...But i need to add them to the trusted list myself most of the time to be able to connect....

so far it isnt working.

I added the mac address of my wireless adaptor to the router "wireless station access list"
the mac address is stuck on a little label on the back of the wireless receiver.
that all worked fine.

I can connect to the router with the wireless adaptor now. full signal strength. great! and full security (hopefully)

however I cant seem to connect to the net at all no matter what I do in windows. i am connected to the router, but nothing seems to get in or out to the internet.

I will continue playing this afternoon and see what happens.

other than that thanks for your help so far guys!

I'm having a little trouble with this very same adapter...

I can connect ok but i have a slight stuttering problem sometimes. It happens quite a lot when gaming.

I tried to update drivers but they don't even install.

I'm using Version 2.0. It's up to version 5.0 now.

Anyone know how to solve the stuttering??

I'm still getting my average 480kbps download speed and a latency of 5 on CS:S.

It's not a connection drop like my old linksys but its a small stutter. Which affects music aswell.

Is your router contected to the internet OK ??

Go to router status and then connection status and you see a screen the same as below..

chaparral,

with a cable, I can connect to the internet fine (and it is quite fast as well)

just with wireless it wont do anything.
think it is a windows setup problem.

It's strange that your connected to your router by wireless ok, but you have no internet access...
Try rebooting the router ..

(i be at work till about 6pm...)

Jive it looks like may have the same problem as this guy in this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17760388&highlight=netgear

Are you using the USB adaptor when you get this stuttering ???

Yes it's connected by usb. I bought the netgear 300mbs gigabit edition router aswell which is exellent but the adapter isn't what i imagined it would be.

Perhaps the pci adapter would work better? Thats another £40+ but i'm not sure they'll let me return this.
