I notice on Steam the Final Fantasy games are all reduced. I've never played any of Final Fantasy games but quite fancy the look of some of the more recent ones. Which one would you recommend to try out for the first time?

VII. VIII is pretty awful, but sort of game ok if you're fairer sex (too much romance story line in that game) I had FF on PS3 forget which and it was bloody awful.

VII is probably one my fav games ever.

Final Fantasy 7 best game ever made for me
Final Fantasy 8 really is second favourite
Final Fantasy 9 some amazing moments and just great.
Final Fantasy 10 great game
Final Fantasy 6 if you can look past the very dated graphics and can enjoy the story and gameplay then your in for a treat

Don't start with 7, it hasn't aged well IMO. It IS my favourite final fantasy by far, but I think he'd be better off waiting for the remake and playing that. FF8-FF10 were all pretty solid. I'd start with 8.

Thanks for the advice guys. What's the deal with the different versions of 8? Steam is listing XIII, XIII-2 and XIII Lightening Returns - are the latter 2 DLCs or what?

So what's the deal with 11 & 12 - Steam says 11 requires a monthly subscription to play and no 12 listed at all?

I can't quite get my head around the general time line for these games. Can anyone tell me when 7 was released and when the most recent one was released?

FF7 came out when the Playstation 1 was out. So without checking, I'd say maybe closeish to 20 years ago. Easily 15.

I have never played 7! did a lot of time with 8 & 10, my mate had them and we used to game into the night with those. Looking forward to the remake of 7 - i'm guessing it will be a PS4 exclusive for a while before PC version though.

7 Was awesome however I feel it's more of a nostalgia thing. If you're new to the series I'd say play 10. My favourite of them all and still holds up really well.

Currently having a bash at 15 and liking it so far. Nothing like the rest of them though as it's no longer turn based, still has a decent story so far.

20 Years as of 31st January. I didn't Google, honestly,

FF7 is the better game. FF8 had more realistic graphics, but the story was pretty boring. Emo character with his girlfriend and a evil black dressed witch type...yawn.

8 was catered to girls, Square wanted wider appeal from female gamers.

I don't agree with this other than Squall being a bit whiney and annoying. It's not like 7 didn't have a love story in it and cloud was pretty whiney and annoying too.

Plus I loved the battle system and the junctioning system.
