Never played any Final Fantasy games - where to start?

Ok when you need to grind, get items, XP etc but once you're high level it's quite pointless. Or if it does happen should be when you walk a greater distance, say once between each town.

Like I say I never had an issue with it. It's definitely something I think a lot of people wouldn't get on with but it never really bothered me.

I remember it being worse at end-game. - this was a lot of years ago now!

I dont know what they did with 15, i'm hearing a lot of mixed reviews on it

7 was my first ff game, got to the dressing up bit or something and gave up, got 8 for xmas around when it was released, found it amazing, never got to the 4th disc, cannot face the ending and that it'll dissapoint me. I cannot bring myself to finish it GOAT game

Start with FF7, brilliant game. has got a good storyline, should definetly pick it up to play, especially with the remake on the way.
I would probably skip FF8 is a bit too easy, just blast through it without leveling and it is easy to complete.
If the graphics of 7 are not good enough for you then FF9 is an amazing game. Didn't realise that they were on offer, may have to pick this up myself
FFX is good if you are after better graphics, and you can easily get carried away in the blitzball minigame, the amount of hours i sunk into just that is crazy.

I personaly would stay away for all the 13 series, they are the only ones i can not bring myself to replay again.

7 is my fave ff game and one of the best games ive ever played, I LOVED it at the time, I'm not sure I could re play it and enjoy it as much now though as the random battles that keep popping up might do my nut in this day and age lol

it was a great game for sure though :)

Thanks again for the all suggestions guys. I think I'm leaning towards FFX as my first taste. I don't mind older graphics if the game is good - I recently played Beyond Good and Evil and loved it for example. I think FFX might be a safer bet as I don't have the nostalgia factor when considering FF7 - does the story, gameplay and general experience still hold up today if you knew nothing about it and had never played it before do you think? If I like it FFX though, no doubt I'll go back and play the older ones. Also I need to factor in that I've never played any JRPGs and wasn't a fan of older style RPGs as a kid although I do enjoy more modern RPGs such as Skyrim, Fallout & The Witcher. I do get slightly apprehensive with more 'pure' RPG games because of the strategic combat although I think I can take some comfort in the fact that it's turn based in FF. I recently played Dragon Age Origins and was completely useless at the strategic combat, even on the easy settings I kept dying and ended up giving up. Combat and strategy doesn't seem to work so well with me. Anyway, I really like the style and presentation of the characters in Anime so fancy trying a good looking JRPG. I see that God Eater 2 is reduced from £40 to £16 for the next few days on Humble Bumble so might pick that one up along with a FF as well...

I think ff7 is the easiest of them all to play as well, not played 10 but 7 was eaiser than 9 for me, story etc was amazing from what I can remember, I did play and complete it but havnt played it since it was released on the ps1

6 though has probably the greatest villain of all FF games, Kefka. The story and character of him are just superb, totally unhinged and just a loony.

THat's why I rate him higher than Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine. He's my Idol. If I believed in reincarnation I would come back as Kefka:)

8 is an absolutely phenomenal game. It really is my favourite of all time, and I am lucky to have played it before 7. I've noticed a theme with people who play 8 after 7, in that they think "oh, why didn't they keep it that way? I wish it could be more like 7", yet I didn't have any such feelings with playing 7 after 8. Maybe it's the fact that it was released before 8, so the expectation can't work in reverse like that. I'm confident that if I played 7 first, I would have concreted my idea of "What FF should be", and then not understood why 8 was so good.

In my opinion you should do yourself a favor and play 8 first, if you don't, it's likely the experience of 7 will ruin it for you. 7 can wait, and it will still be absolutely great, no matter what others you have played before it.

:edit: Like has been said, be careful about the version you get if you do on PC. The audio - dependent on the version - can be quite different, enough to make/break the entire experience :p

:edit2: absolutely don't play IX or X first! IX is an acquired taste, much better to experience it after already knowing where it has come from with reference to 7 and 8. As for X, it is missing a pretty major - killer - feature of the more traditional FFs, the explorable world map.

There's a sound pack for FF8 on PC called Roses & Wine which puts in the proper cd quality audio. I imagine any other ones which suffer the midi music nonsense will have something similar.

Another vote for 8 from me... and I agree with the above; I played 8 first and although I really enjoyed 7 as well I think I prefer 8 too... I never played 9 but did play 10 and enjoyed it (Tidus is annoying-ness notwithstanding)
