Never played any Final Fantasy games - where to start?

yes FF7 had story but you could date...other people lol. 8 just bored me with constant romantic story quest, like nothing else there. Then you have to go to the ball in 8. yawn.

In 7 you have Clouds back story, in fact stories for all of the characters.

I love both, I just don't think you're right with the romantic story being the overarching theme of the game. I personally found the gameplay better and for me, it was more fun to play.

Started playing 9 few days ago as i've never played it, really enjoying it so far.

Honestly, I would start from 7 and work your way up.

12 is not on steam, but soon they're releasing a remaster for it on PS4, It will most likely come to steam eventually as they brought X/X-2 Remaster to steam when it was only on PS3/4.

I would go for 8, but if I remember when they released on PC they mucked the audio up. I think there is an addon called Iron and Wine that improves the audio and makes it playable. 8 is one of my favourite ever games.

FF7 is the better game. FF8 had more realistic graphics, but the story was pretty boring. Emo character with his girlfriend and a evil black dressed witch type...yawn.

8 was catered to girls, Square wanted wider appeal from female gamers.
Ah, i didnt know they were trying to appeal to a wider audience. I know 7 is rated as one of the best JPRG games, no idea why I never got round to playing it

FF 7, 8, 9 and 10. After that it started to lose the plot.

XIII is just horrible. Want to play XV, but on PC.

You could say that with how different FF7 was to all preceding games, that it was the one trying to appeal to the wider audience. Regardless of anything though, 7-10 are all excellent games and well worth playing.

I'd say start with 7 as well.

Happy memories of buying a PS1 just to play this.

Awesome.

Use to be a longtime FInal fantasy fan. Started playing before 7 came out on the PS1. THere are a few notable ones which really stood out for me.

Final Fantasy 3 on the Nes (or famicom in the US or Japan), FF6 on the SNES (Super Famicom), FF7 on the PS1 and FF10 on the PS2. And I would really be hard pushed to pick one out as a favourite as these are the ones I spent the most time playing. Strangely enough After I finished FF10 I haven't enjoyed an RPG since then.

FF7 is the arguably the most popular but is certainly the most famous of the FF games. I feel 7 brought the JRPG to the masses and made the genre popular like in much more before any RPG that came out before it. But like a previous poster has said it is very dated so lets see what the remake brings. Although recently I did buy FF 10 remake for the ps4 and the pc. I did play 8 and even though the sound and graphics were a huge improvement over 7 I just didn't get on with it. And for some reason I can't even remember 9. 10 literally blew me away. I enjoyed it so much. I think 10 would be a better starting point than 7 as it doesn't look or sound dated compared to 7 if it not a big deal to the OP then going with 7 would be equally as good.

I also use to collect the Final Fantasy stuff.

But I feel the series is a shadow of it former self and the nostalgia within me from playing all those games keeps the former games on a fonder memory than the latest incarnations.

I have never played 7! did a lot of time with 8 & 10, my mate had them and we used to game into the night with those. Looking forward to the remake of 7 - i'm guessing it will be a PS4 exclusive for a while before PC version though.

It won't be a remake of 7 as was in 1997, it's a remake of 7 but in a new way not just updated graphics. I'll still play it though.

7 Was awesome however I feel it's more of a nostalgia thing. If you're new to the series I'd say play 10. My favourite of them all and still holds up really well.

Currently having a bash at 15 and liking it so far. Nothing like the rest of them though as it's no longer turn based, still has a decent story so far.

20 Years as of 31st January. I didn't Google, honestly,

Agree with the nostalgia thing, I got my gf to try it when 7 was released on the PS Store and she didn't even finish Midgar, sad times.

Will add that 7 is too my fav by far but 6 is also very good.

How do adults play games like FFS VII? I loved it on release and sank 160 hours into the first play through and yes, played through a second time... barely have time for a round of CSS these days :(

Took a while to play Witcher 3, Fall Out series, Oblivion, Skyrim etc..usually a few hours a night, or mostly if not doing a work shift.

Totally agree with 7 being the best and definitely a good place to start. I'm surprised more people don't speak highly of 9, I thought it was right up there with 7. 10 also very very good, but i'm not really a big fan of Tidus.

6 though has probably the greatest villain of all FF games, Kefka. The story and character of him are just superb, totally unhinged and just a loony.

9 was very good but I had some issues with it. The final boss was a bit stupid and tacked on and Kuja himself wasn't a great bad guy either in my opinion. The rest of the story though was really good, I loved how the Eidolons(summons) were part of the actual story.

I wouldn't bother with it, 7 was ok and the other main games are pretty trash. The storys are pretty awful too so there isn't even the incentive to play for that, it's just one giant camp weeb mess. The MMO is good though I have heard, you could look into that if you are interested in the 'theme' FF has.

It's easy to recommend 7 however imo the combat style just hasn't aged well making a playthrough today quite tough mentally. With the 7 remake on the way maybe look to that though I doubt it will be completely faithful to the original.

I enjoyed 10 quite a lot. Still an older style of ten based battle system but there's a hd version on steam so may be worth a look. I believe they also added options to take out some of the old day frustrations like chose if you have random encounters or not etc just to speed it up a bit

I'd rather have the turn based combat and random encounters any day compared to the combat and encounters in FF15.
