Never played any Final Fantasy games - where to start?

Because the games aren't linked through storyline maybe picking by choosing a setting you like would be a good place to start.

VII is futuristic with steam punk vibe
VIII is futuristic
IX is medieval style (also Steiner is just a lovable idiot :D)
XIII is also futuristic but as most people have mentioned here, best probably to start with the most noteworthy 3

Also arent really linked through graphical style, 7 & 9 are pretty chibi, 8 & 10 more 'adult' (if final fantasy could ever get 'adult' lol)

FFVII - Great world, great story and probably the most acclaimed of the FF games. Its aged poorly imo but is still highly recommended.
FFVIII - Great world & story but not quite as good as VII. Still a great game and worth a play.
FFIX - I only put a few hours into this one so can't really comment. It just didnt grab me though
FFX - Great game and one of my favourites. Its more liniar then the earlir games but the story really keeps you involved in the world. Highly recommended.
FFXI - MMO, avoid unless thats what you are looking for. (not played it myself)
FFXII - Same as IX for me. Only played a few hours of it and wasn't pulled in.
FFXIII - Avoid this one IMO. Its kind of like X in that it is linear but the story/world just fell flat for me. Didnt enjoy it as much.
FFXIV - Another MMO. (not played it)
FFXV - The current gen game on the PS4. Looks pretty good but i don't have a PS4 so can't comment.

TLDR: FFVII & X are the standouts and are my favourites. VIII was also really really good

I'm thinking of getting XIII in the sale (great time to get into FF games btw!)

Is it really that bad? I mean compared to the rest it might not be as good, but ive played 8/9/10. I was thinking of getting the X hd remaster to play again and the XIII trilogy (£15!)

I've heard better things about the 3rd part in the tale

when you get towards the end game in 13 it is actually pretty fun. I enjoyed the levelling system as you cant overgrind, you are limited to certain levels and this makes the boss fights a little more tactical. I didn't touch 13-2 or lightning returns, but I enjoyed 13 for what it was.

10 would be a great place to start in the series, it has plenty to do in the game to keep you occupied and the storyline is quite good too.

however as said above by nearly everyone... 7 holds a special place in my heart, 1997 - 10 years old and getting lost in that fantasy world, incredible.

What's there to think about it? GET IT!!! I've sunk way to many hours into this game, via the original on PS2, not so much on the PS3 version as my original phat PS3 died :'(, quite a bit on PS4 and now that most FFs are on steam (I'm mostly on PC) I have sunk way too many hours into it.

I can replay FFX sooo many times, no idea why I just enjoy the game.

If you're looking to get into the stories of the games, on the re releases on steam you do get a....sort of a cheat system they've implemented, such as Infinite health, no encounters, 9999 damage, 2x speed etc. If you're not up for grinding for XP and stuff then its a good way to keep you from getting bored with the games. So far I know FF7, FF9 and FF10 have it.

I use some of the features such as 2x for FF9 since I don't fancy the looooong grind sesh, I just want to know the story of the game.

Played 7 to death on the PS1 but then discovered Vagrant story, parasite eve and Chrono cross...and i have never gone back to FF, there are better games in the genre. Im currently playing through Disagea on the PC which i would recommend.

Anyone on here got ff14? i've never played an MMO before and i fancy it now its 50% too, just wondering if im too late to the party...

While i am enjoying it, I really dont know why they chose a character like Tidus as the main. He is so annoying, whiney, idiotic & childish to the point I want to punch him

100%... I think it's almost entirely down to the voice-actor (reminds me of "Chance" from Disney's Homeward Bound)... To be honest I prefer the dialogue being written rather than spoken - Squall or Cloud could easily have come across as whiny and irritating too had they been voiced. It's kind of interesting that a feature which is intended to make the game more immersive almost has the opposite effect (for me at least)... when the dialogue is all written I never have a problem imagining voices for the characters - in some sense I always felt as if that made my play-through of the game more uniquely mine. Not only that but poorly written/translated dialogue comes across far less badly that way (it's almost as if you filter-out the awkwardness of it, which is hard to do when you've just heard it out loud)

Also, i never watch english anime. I know the flow of japanese pretty well & some simple words, plus it never sounds as cheesy if in (because I is clever & different?) foreign language.

So when he opened his mouth it was an 'oh no, need to switch to jap audio & subtitles' moment, and there isnt. I know there was a supposed fix, but there were virus reports or something & I just stayed away

Back when story games were on another level :) now its just pumping out the same old open world crap

I'm currently playing XV on the PS4 and I can't believe how much potential this game had and how they ruined it all with a disjointed story, bad fetchquests and a closed world full of invisible barriers...

I'm still enjoying it because the combat is very lively and visually impressive and you actually feel like you're on a roadtrip with all the camping, banter, Ignis cooking meals etc.

The world is beautiful but if it actually was as big as they promised (spanning three continents), more open and less empty with better sidequests, this could have been a hell of a game. It would really feel like a massive journey. It's unbelievable how much landmass they've cut.

8 for me, the 7 and then 10. Wasn't really into 9 and haven't played any of the others now.

Would love to see 7 & 8 have a true 4K remaster with atmos sound added and all tat just to live in the nostalgia in honesty.

If you want to play Final Fantasy, play IX. It's quintessential Final Fantasy. Everything else mentioned here are fantastic games in their own right, but IX takes everything that represents Final Fantasy and perfects it.
