New 120Hz/"240Hz" VA monitor for gamers (Eizo Foris FG2421)

No I didnt but then that doesn't have any bearing on the result compared with a CRT which has been achieved by various reliable sources and using various reliable methods in fact. There isn't a lag of 33ms on the Eizo (13 + 20ms) I'm sure of that and I wouldn't be out of by one random video personally

Unless that video is deliberately misrepresentative, it definitely lags the XL2410T by 15ms or more, though ... that combined with others reporting significant input lag suggests something is up.

More likely something up with the setup / config / system in that video I would have thought. Every proper measurement I've seen from reliable sources (TFTCentral, prad, Overclockers.ru, blurbusters) has confirmed lag around the 13-14ms mark in 120Hz mode. And that's from a variety of decent testing methods too including SMTT 2 and several different oscilloscope methods

Well, like I say, something appears to be amiss. I would assume that the person who set up the equipment for that video knew what they were doing.

Possibly but I wouldn't dismiss the readings and measurements of many popular and specialised websites using advanced testing methods over something like that. Like I say, I don't think the lag on the FG2421 is particularly bad

How close to IPS quality should this monitor be?

VA will give you deeper blacks and for gaming and movies, images will look more vibrant and lush (because of the deeper blacks). The better contrast ratio will also help.

I own pretty much every type of screen technology. IMO, plasma is best, followed by VA LCD, followed by IPS LCD.

The problem with VA, for gaming, I believe is the slower refresh rate - so this is something you would need to investigate yourself.

Finally got mine today and have only had a couple of hours to play with it so i'm sure i'll find more pros/cons as the days go on. No dead or stuck pixels and no backlight bleed to speak of.

Initial thoughts are very positive; I cannot believe how deep the blacks are! Colours look nice and the whole thing is a world away from the 2411, although to be fair, it is twice the price.

Not noticed any more input lag than the Benq, (KD's stayed the same) and the motion looks excellent in 240hz mode, i'd say as good as the Lightboost hack I was running previously. Like I said, early days but very happy so far.

When I first got my VA monitor (some 5 yrs back), I was amazed how close its image quality was, compared with my Sony Trinitron CRT monitor.

Years later, I bought a DELL IPS monitor and in terms of colour reproduction, it was terrible. The main reason for this was the black levels. This is why I say, once you have seen a good CRT, a plasma or VA monitor, you will realise just how poor an IPS monitor is, when it comes to displaying graphics/video. The black levels are what bring out the colours.

Apparently OLED monitors which should be affordable soon, offer the contrast ratio of a plasma, while offering the power usage levels of an LED backlit LCD screen. So, best of both Worlds.

I had to send mine back there was light coming through the edges left and right side, top to bottom about 10mm wide. didn't notice it at first, can only see it on dark games ie dead space and the metro series.
Prob gonna wait and get another one hopefully off a new batch, as the monitor is great.
thanks

If I turn on the high contrast theme in windows (the black one) and stare at the desktop I get some faint bleed in the corners, with a normal desktop and during games I can't see any at all.

I've got a Gretag i1 calibrator but the Match software for it isn't supported any more (Win 8.1) so i'm unable to do a proper job on it, anyone any ideas what I can do? Any third party apps I can use with it?

I've used the TFTCentral settings for now, though i'm finding the 6500k settings a little yellow.

6500k is meant to be sort of yellow though? Give it time you only notice the yellow now as you just switched from probably a red predominant picture. I have seen this written somewhere before about 6400k and a slight yellow. Maybe you went a little low to 6000k.

If hes just switched from the BenQ most of the gaming BenQs out the box are closer to 6900-7200K or so and very blue :| and its quite noticeable going straight to a properly calibrated 6500K (that they are much warmer colored).

One of the things I liked about the old Samsung 2233rz was the blacks - even though if you looked closely you could tell it was 6bit w/ FRC properly calibrated the blacks were deep and gorgeous and made up for a lot of the other image quality shortcomings of TN.

I never really understand calibration equipment and using others settings, and then saying it looks to yellow, blue, bright etc, surely just set it to what YOU like and be done with it.

Some of the "pro" gaming presets look awful and just makes me think, what the .... You spend £400+ on a 24" screen and you want it to look like that, no thank you.

Got mine set just the way i like it and its perfect, for me.

Nickolp1974 I agreed with you 100%.
All settings on my screens are to MY taste, not to someone elses.
This is why my own calibration equipment (ie. my own eyes) are what I use to calibrate my screens.

I noticed a few new reviews of the Eizo FG2421 were released recently. I decided to take a look and compile all of the professional reviews and their closing thoughts.

Sweclockers.com: Seal of approval: Eizo Foris FG2421 is an outstanding gaming screen that does not compromise on the colors.

Flatpanelshd.com: EIZO FORIS FG2421 IS A SMALL REVOLUTION IN GAMING MONITORS, COMBINING GREAT PICTURE QUALITY WITH SPEED

Hardware.no: "Foris FG2421 is the best gaming monitor available today"

PurePc: "recommend" must be well earned, 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Prad.de: I didn't pay to read, but from what others have said they gave it high marks for gaming but lowered overall score simply for color "accuracy".

TFTCentral: "The overall gaming performance of the Eizo FG2421 was very good. There is a small additional lag or around 4ms added when Turbo 240 is enabled, but still not a huge number to worry about. Eizo and Sharp have done a great job in offering the first 120Hz compatible VA panel on the market, and it doesn't disappoint when it comes to gaming. As well as these areas, the VA panel was able to offer staggering contrast ratios which you just couldn't get from a TN Film model. The wider viewing angles add additional flexibility compared with TN Film and the screen benefited from that more rounded performance feel. The light semi-glossy AG coating, lack of PWM backlight dimming and decent connectivity options were very welcome. Gaming is obviously the key focus of the FG2421 and we felt it did very well thanks to all these factors.

I don't think I've seen such an overall highly reviewed monitor in quite some time and goes hand in hand with my experience.

What's the point in having great blacks if you get a grey smear all the way down the right side of the monitor every time you get a new one. Blacks are no longer black on darker scenes because of it.

I am on my 3rd screen and I give up now.

I am gonna wait till the new batchs Come through early next year, I don't suppose all your faulty ones were made in Germany? Think it's a bad batch don't see how they could all pass qc, mine was only bad In dark games.
