*NEW* 150Gb Raptors

the reason the competition don;t make the high performance drives like the raptor is because they will eat into their scsi market. WD does not make any scsi market so its raptor drives will not take any money away from their scsi market. other companies like segate etc have scsi drives and a raptor like product will cut down the sales of the scsi drives.

Problem is programs are getting bigger, meaning drives have to be bigger, 74gb is NOT big enough by today's standards.

My computer here has a 36Gb raptor.

Sure programs will cause sizes to go up but the main driver for harddisc capacity increases is multimedia storage.

isnt amazing that after all of these YEARS of these drives being out and despite their relatively small size, western digital has been able to sustain these high prices. for just a few dollars more than a 74gb drive u
can get a 400gb drive

Your missing the point - the majority of servers run with small drives because at the end of the day it's about speed and reliability.
Remember the raptor was designed as a server hard disc.

ill be happy with just 1 raptor 74gig as the windows and programs drive and my 250gig seagate can be relegated to secondary storage of multimedia files etc. best way to do things.

than again the WD 400gig raid edition drive is also a very good performer and not too bad on the cost.

I have decided to treat myself to a 74gb Raptor.... however I will be a tad annoyed if they upgrade the 74gb version with 16mb of cache and NCQ a few weeks after I've bought 1. Can anyone shed any light on the rumours that this may happen? I'm prepared to wait if thats the case...

Cheers

P.S Don't really want to pay for the 150gb version as I want the raptor as a boot and program drive - Got a 250gb Maxtor for storage.

As far as I know, the 36GB raptor will go end of life and stock will eventually dissapear. 74GB will stay as it is but at what price is unknown. The 150GB will be the new high-end model and pricing is also unknown at the moment. It shouldn't be double the cost of the 74GB raptor though.

Cheers Adam. Do you have any ideas when it will be available to reviews, if there will be an NDA and when that will expire, and when it'll be available to buy?

Also, will you be doing preorders on it, or just on sale when it arrives?

This'll teach you answer one question, there's always tons more asked :)

As soon as we have pricing they can go on the site. :) We should be looking this month though.

Lol, before reading that review, i was thinking of just getting a Atlas II/MAU SCSI drive. Now i think i'll just wait and get the new raptor :)

Ive just read that review. The new Raptor looks interesting. Seems they have managed to increase single user performance quite considerably. Personally I still think 150gb is too big for a high performance system drive. What do you guys think would provide better performance; 1x150gb raptor with 2 partitions containing Windows and Programs or 2x74gb raptors With windows on one drive and the programs on the other?

Edit: adwhitworth, can we expect the 36gb and 74gb versions to fall in price after the release of the 150gb versions, if so, by how much do you estimate?

It is unlikely that the 74GB will drop as it is already at a promotion price done by WD before Christmas. The 36GB is unlikely to drop either but I'll try to find out.

The price of the 150GB is still pretty good. It is less than if you purchased two 74GB Raptors.
