The Asus 280X at £320 - Im guessing that even the cheapest 290 will have some distance between the most expensive 280X? Otherwise not really sure who whould buy an overpriced 280X when a 290 is not much more? Worries me that the 290 price could end up being close to £400.....

That is an ROG Matrix Platinum card, they are always hugely more expensive.

The R280X should be £240 -£280 :)

Anyone else sick of the same old crappy cooler designs?

Please do me a favor and try to get some reference cooler 280's in... they look far better than the same old MSI and Asus coolers. You could show me any of the MSI nvidia 5/6/7 series or AMD series and I wouldn't be able to tell you what card it was. They all look pretty much identical.

Rant over, I'm pleased with the price of the R9 280 to be honest, looking forward to seeing the 290.

That's what the 270X is (actually slightly faster out of the box than a 7950 boost) hence its pricing starting just over £150 being awesome :D.

The only downside is 256bit bus and 2gb of vram. However expecting 384 bit and 3gb at that low price (£150) is asking too much. To get an equivalent 384bit 3gb card from Nvidia you're looking at £500.

Hi there

We have the new R9 270X/280X in stock now along with R7 240/250/260X also in stock, to help you understand these new cards:-

  • R280X is HD 7970GHz re-badged with various different OC's, performance is identical to HD 7970GHz on same drivers / clock speeds.
  • R270X varies in clock speeds a lot, to some being heavily tuned and highly overclocked 7870 XT's, expect stock 7950 performance more or less from an overclocked out the box R270X, of course a HD 7950 overclocked will outperform this card.
  • R260X performance sits around HD 7790 levels but it has the new True HD Audio feature and is a brand new card.
  • R240/R250 series are very low power cards at a great price point

Nice, honest and clear opener there Gibbo :)

Since you have the 290/290x in for testing purposes - Can you confirm if the reference cooler pushes hot air back in to the case or vents it out the back?

Ideally i'd need it to be the latter if it's going to go in the Mini ITX system I have planned.

Out the back on reference cooler design.
