New and shocking footage of British troops torturing Iraqis...

Throwing stones one day, roadside bombs the next.
I wonder why that might be?

What chance is there of getting the locals on your side when all you do is beat them? Surely a "Hearts and Minds" approach has to be more beneficial for the long term safety of our troops.

I wouldn't like to say what I'd do in their situation. I don't know a great deal about being in the military and I don't know any current serving members. But it just seems totally the wrong way to go about getting people on your side :/

I find a majority of the people on this thread are finding a way to condone this sort of behaviour, that is fine no problems.

Not so quick to condone suicide bombers though, I will say after watching videos liek this I can totally understand why the a person would carry out such bombings.

Question? does anyone here think that because Saddam's regime was brutal that gives us a license to be as bad?

NO - GB is just a playing the role of a damn yes man to USA, USA would not support us if it was not in their interest (OIL) to do so, so why should we.

What a silly thing to say..

and its extremely insulting to those who do resort to suicide bombing...You think they would give up their lives because some kids got beaten up? Youre having a laugh..

Its the killings of their families that recruit suicide bombers..If you think a beating would spur someone on to blowing themselves up, you dont know much about people.

Suicide bombers don't go out for revenge after some squaddie beats the living crap out of a rioter, they do it because they want to change the face of the world and blowing themselves up seems to do that for them, fighting for a cause which they will never reap the benefits of.

tbh, I think the little buggers deserved it, if I was there and some people started trying to kill me, I'd give them a right good beating too.

How so?

You dont think having your family killed would be more likely to turn you into a nutjob than seeing some kids beaten up on a video?

Sorry, I misunderstood context... hence have deleted my comment

i agree that events such as this alone are not likely to increase the likelihood of suicide bombing - but I don't think that suicide bombers are motivated by the death of family members - i believe that is what most mujahadeen would like us to think but more likely they are the weakest dregs of society

Well clearly it is impossible to change the opinions of others. It would be interesting to see a poll on the matter (expecting people against the soldiers).

I'd expect people against the beating of prisoners, so in effect we'd be against the soldiers in the video. I am far from against the soldiers in general, and you seem to think now the forum somehow has it in for all soldiers.
You claimed that the beating of the prisoners was necessary for the maintaining of disclipine among the Iraqi populace? I sure as hell hope you aren't going for a commission in the RM.

Yes a beating would, do you think suicide bombers react after one event, there will be a number of things they see or live through to result in them making that decision...and yes this beating could be the straw that breaks the camels back.....

What they did was wrong...no matter what the situation - they abused/assaulted people (even if they were being stoned at by them) - they should have arrested them and placed them in prison - end of story. Soldiers that go on like this are a disgrace to this country and are in no way similar to professional men who fight for what is right.

The troops that are running to scatter the target, what happens if the target doesn't scatter? Would you be happy with the use of sticks or batons to get a point across? What happens if the target doesn't scatter after a single strike?
