Looking to build a computer for around £400-£450 excluding operating system.

What do you think of this? Will all the components work together? Also is this motherboard too basic and should i get a bigger one with more PCI-slots etc. If yes can you recommend one which will work with that processor.

have a look in this thread I believe the poster required an OS there, so scoop out the Graphics card in the post, and replace with an X1950 Pro connect 256MB.

Look at the Conroe specs BTW, Lazy-boy and or Furnaces springs to mind.

it says SKT775 and the processor is 775 too? Is this combination not possible???

Lay-z-Boy and Furnace are the names of two posters who suggested specs in the linked thread. ;)

Conroe is the codename used internally by Intel while developing the Core 2 Duo line of CPUs.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about Socket 775. Yes, both the socket on the motherboard and CPU both need to be the same design, in this case they're both LGA775.
 
looked at the spec by furnace but i dont want that processor . i prefer this pentium d 945 3.4ghz

so that conroe motherboard will work with the processor right :confused:

Clockspeed is not the end-all be-all of processors. That E4300 with a healthy overclock will absolutely destroy the Pentium D in terms of performance. It'll use less power as well. :)

You'd have to be mad to buy a Pentium D right now. ;)
 
Compared to the core 2 duo 4300 @ 1.8 its a rubbish cpu

compared to the core 2 duo 4300 overclocked @ 2.8 its a waste of money

I did prepare a post for you I thought i had added it but obviously not.

I did a setup for you with a 775 motherboard and found that i could get it at 429 inc vat.

So for an extra 30 pound you got a better graphics card in a 7600gs and a better cpu in the core2duo 4300

I think the Pentium 4 D at 4.2Ghz (super overclock) is only 66% as fast as the Core 2 Duo (3GHz, a medium overclock) in Super Pi (a quick benchmark).

It is also cooler.

Hence the price difference!
 
Here it is, its got a bog standard PSU and case though I do like the look of them White Zens...

Also for the record the x1600 is really really pants.. especially compared to the 7600gs

Why not an Antec NK4400 (which comes with solid PSU) and a Gigabyte S3?

The uATX PSU and case are more expensive than the Antecs 380w PSU in a good case. Savings will get you the very reliable S3 (10 cheaper than the DS3) rather than the asrock.
 
mattpj nice spec there, but STOP including that PSU! Its very very very old spec, ATX 1.x vs. ATX 2.xx of newer mobos requirements! & the Watts are way below what the manufacture specifies these days, think its 350W :)

Just to know how old it is, when I joined (look to the left under avatar) OcUK it was in the shops!
 
Curses, rumbled again.

DJSKYLINE get a 350watt minimum psu, the one i have specced is way off the mark, i actually thought it was a 350watt
