New build

You have the retail Core 2 Duo - it comes with a thermal transfer pad on the underside of the HSF - so you do not need to apply further. It would be a reasonable step though. However I don't see anything that would come with thermal go in your list.

is it worth getting the e6400 for £20 more. Higher FSB. i dont need to overlock that much - 3GHZ is enough. Also that motherboard i choose should do this right?

well if im right (prob not :) ) the e4300 has multiplier 9 but 1.8ghz stock and the e6400 has mutliplier 8 and 2.1ghz stock with 1066mhz bus speed

so isnt the e6400 a better processor to go for?

also you said the stock FSB doesnt matter if im going to overclock but the motherboard says max 1066mhz which is the same as the e6400 not clocked

please answer this too. can i use the e6400 with the asrock conroexfire motherboard with standard fan/heatsink to overclock to 3ghz minimum?

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 Socket 775 Onboard Audio SATA ATX

Sumvision 550W 20+4pin SATA 2x 80mm Fan PSU - Retail Box

Sony AW-G170AB2 18xDVD±RW/RAM Dual Layer Writer Black - Bare Drive

Seagate ST3160811AS 160GB 7200.9 SATA II 7200RPM Drive - OEM

all for less than £500 excluding video card

I am very suspicious of that PSU having never heard of it, and that case sounds less than ideal. Cases are personal thing though - some people just want/need a box.

EDIT TO ADD

No way on this earth I would trust those top end compenents to a £10 PSU.

You sir are having a laugh.

Skimp on the PSU and you will have endless problems!

Seconded! PSU should be given number one priority, its what feeds your (lovely) rig. I don't dispute that cheap PSU do work, problem is how & what happens when they decide to fail. On the latter, that happens very spectacularly & WILL take out the rest of the system.

Regarding how the work: There's a well known cheap PSU that claimed it could output 650W - well it could only do 498W & was drawing from the mains more than 725W for that (i.e. efficiency was very very poor) :(

Regarding a cheap case...
  • Money is spent/wasted (trying) to beautify the outside of the case as the inside suffers poor build quality making working inside difficult & the next 2 problems
  • Some components might not fit comfortably or neatly
  • AIRFLOW - as simple as it sounds this is very important. Bad airflow can make your system unstable, components live shorter, etc. As much as a new PC are power hungry, they are also air-thirsty :D
All that said, a good PSU & case will last you many upgrades. In fact you can say that, they are overall the best investments in a system ;)

Has THIS WEEK ONLY changed already ? my cart is £12 cheaper than yesterday.

Steer well clear of QTEC or... sunflower was it? for £10 your getting a grenade disguised as a PSU, never skimp on your power supply it could blow and take the rest of your system with it.

Quoted for great justice!

The Corsair will work out fine DJ. Perhaps a little anemic, but entirely suitable.

PSU

You cant grumble at the HIPER 580W for £55.21inc VAT

Or the CORSAIR 520W £20 dearer but suppose to be the biz.

I am also looking at building a new PC and this is what I have come up with so far.

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
£112.79

Asus P5B (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
£82.24

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-5400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
£111.61

BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 7600 GS 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
£71.66

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
£16.44

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-WH Zen White Case - No PSU
£30.54

Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black
£55.21

TOTAL = £480.49

not a bad system for that price is it ?
how much would the thieves in the purple shirts charge for something like this ?

Get the geil 6400C5 RAM for the same money, it runs at 800MHz (i.e. faster).

Upgrade that gfx to the 7600 GT, it is quite a bit faster than the GS.

ditch that hyper, go for a corsair, seasonic or enermax.

otherwise, great new build.

Wouldnt the C4 be better at £5 dearer than the C5 ?
