New Build

Wow, thanks for the heads up :D Do you think I have enough power to SLI these in future should I need too?

It's not something im consdering know but could be a possibility in future.

I wouldn't trust that particular Corsair model for 780 SLI. Not to say it wouldn't work out. But I wouldn't buy it knowingly for SLI.

If you do get the 300R let me know how it is - there's also a B-Grade Z87X-OC for like £80 so grab that maybe? :D

Good shout on the orange SATA cables, Altrewin, knew I was forgetting something. I left out the USB cable because I think that's a USB 2.0 and the case only has 3.0. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

And good shout on the GPU for SLI on that board.

Thanks for that Lee. Will consider it then. Do you have any pics of your cooler and mobo so I can see where it sits in comparison? Im guessing the size difference isnt a big difference from 2 to 3.

This is fitted on a Z77X-D3H Motherboard with 3570K cpu. The case is Bitfenix Raider. The fan on the cooler was touching the top of the first ram module when I first fitted it, but you can move it up by taking the clips off and then moving it up a couple of notches.

The Raider case is the same width as the 300R (210mm) so it should give you a good idea. Looking at BeQuiet's website it seems the Dark Rock 3 is 6mm shorter in height anyway.

Yes, read some reviews about that PSU before pulling the trigger. It's not ideal for high-end multi-GPU. And it's quite overpriced for some reason (compared to US where it's about $100). Its price-to-performance should be around £60-65 imo. The 3 year warranty is one giveaway. A good PSU around that price-range will be 5+ years.

It's not designed to last long, with Teapo instead of Japanese capacitors. It's made by HEC for Be Quiet!, who also produced the EVGA 600B for EVGA (which for £50 is good value), and this PSU is only slightly better (in some respects*) but it's £40 more...

The L8 730w has dual 12v rails of 30 and 25 amps, making a total of 55 amps. And the CPU will share one of those rails with one of your GPUs (if you went SLI).

* The 49 amps on the single 12v rail on the EVGA 600B actually makes it superior for a single GPU (which is all it can run as it only has two PCI-E connectors).

You'll be much better off spending £5-10 more on a far better one, and dealing with the colour theme later on. You could make a shroud for it, or have one made, for example. Black and orange, or just black. Metal and painted or acrylic with vinyl wrap.

The Seasonic psu is better, although it is out of stock atm.

The Molex to 4 x SATA power extension will connect to the back of your SSD, Hard drive and optical drive. Hopefully the cable will be long enough for all three.

You will be better off with 2 x 6+2 pci cables because you can use them with a 6 pin or 8 pin socket.

You need 3 sata cables (SSD, Hard Drive and Optical drive)

Also 4 x 2 pin I/O cables (1 for Power switch, 1 for Reset Switch, 1 for Hard drive led and 1 for Power led)

Thanks for all your help guys. With all the above in mind, please review final build before I hit buy :)

Added an sp140 for another intake at front (Will work alongside 300r standard one) and 2 sp120's, one for H60 (Swap out the existing fan so I can have colour band), the other as an exhaust at the top of the case. Plan on buying some orange spray paint for the bands to add more colour.

Swapped to the H60 so I can show off more of the mobo / orange. Added R9 for orange also.

As for the PSU i'll probably just peel the blue sticker off, If I can!

Thanks guys.

Personally I'd get the Bitfenix Ronin. The 300R has vents on the side window - not to my liking. OcUK don't have the Ronin in stock, but you can find it elsewhere.

To be clear about the fans: You want an SP120 for the cooler and AF120 and/or AF140 for intake and exhaust.

Some orange spray paint for the fan rings :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x MTN 94 Spray Paint Orange - 400ml £4.99
Total : £8.90 (includes shipping : £3.26).

EDIT: An external DVD drive will keep the build looking clean.

Yep, 120 for cooler and 120 for top exhaust and 140 for front intake.

Nice one on spray paint I didn't even bother to search OCUK thinking they wouldn't stock it.

Right, but just to make sure: you only have AF fans in your basket. You want an SP for the cooler. The SP series are optimised for use on radiators.

I didnt even notice there was a difference mate, thanks. Was just going off pics.

Looks like 1 SP120 for cpu then and 1 120AF for top exhaust. Just did a quick google and due to the case having dust filters on intake and as fan is over cages, might be best to get an SP140 for intake also instead of AF.

What do you all think of this now then? Macbook air sold on that popular auction site last night which has now raised the last bit of cash to splash out on a new desktop!

Let me know your thoughts before I hit buy now :)

Edit - Not sure what second keyboard is doing there :? ignore that ha.

Check:

Two x 2pin I/O's, not four?

The SuperFlower Leadex 750 Gold is presently available for the same price as the Seasonic. Seasonic is quality as well but the Leadex would look beastly in that case. And I know it's a bit more expensive but this Avexir RAM is better quality and would look very sexy.

Where will you be mounting the Hydro? And where is the single AF120 fan going?

And just so you know (in case you didn't), there is a cheaper 290 Tri-X now, which just needs overclocking:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-03-40G) £341.99

Hi there

Sapphire have given us a great deal, due to 290 Tri-X demand being so high and supply so poor, they said to me, look we can get you many many units if we don't pre-overclock them to save us time, if this is OK we can get you lots and much quicker!

Of course I agreed to this deal and the stock is leaving Hong Kong today, we expect the delivery Friday or Monday, so this price is PRE-ORDER ONLY.

That Superflower psu is pretty long (200mm). I don't know if it would hinder any of the case cable routing points. The max psu length is 240mm.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6055/corsair-carbide-300r-case-review-corsair-for-the-masses

Yes. Given it's designed to take a PSU of max 240 depth, I thought might as well use it to show off that gorgeous chunky Leadex. Any cables that need fitting at the bottom of the motherboard can be slipped through the appropriate routing point before placing the PSU. Don't imagine there'll be any really thick cables that absolutely need to go through that point either, so there would probably be enough room to slide the cables in (at an upwards angle) from behind, even with the PSU mounted, imo.

I've seen pics of a Corsair AX1200i (also 200mm) in a 300R build.

But hey, if it might be a headache in the slightest way, go for the Seasonic.
