I just took the jump and joined the club
i ordered

M1730 Smoke Grey
X9000 2.8Ghz extreme CPU
4Gb Ram
2 x 160GB in raid 0 with Freefall sensors
Wireless n
DVD +/- RW
Vista Home Premium
Backpack

just have to wait 2 weeks for it........i cant wait

I'm really thinking of getting one of these dual gpu laptops to replace my desktop.

Is this model likely to have a refresh soon?

Can you overclock the cpu/gpu's on this as well?

Hi mate the M1730 with either of the extreme x7900 or x9000 chips is CPU overclockable due to the Unlocked multiplier on these CPU's i think the X9000 max is 3.4 on the M1730 Bios. The GPU's are overclockble on any M1730 i sometimes run mine at 625/1900 :) I dont think its due for a refresh for a while as its only just had a refresh with the 8800's from the 8700's and the new penryn CPU's.

Mine has replaced my desktop, hardly any slower in games. (8800gtx sli)

It's so much quieter, cooler and smaller than a desktop and becuase it's a laptop you don't need anything else to use it.

Nothing is planned for it right now. The 8800m gtx is the fastest out there and will be for some time, centrino 2 probably won't end up in this laptop as they would have to design a new motherboard and the cost of ddr3 outweighs its small performance gains over ddr2. Though it might be updated for use with quad core mobile chips.

Unlike my first m1730 which was a total disaster, my second has done a fantastic job of taking over my desktop at home and on the go. (Brilliant for lans)

8800m GTX OC very well!

650/1000 best I could get without a voltmod...

750/950 with + 0.5v (Temps were + 3-4c on top of normal temps)

Sounds good. I think I will be getting one of these as I dont seem to use my desktop as much these days and a laptop would be more suitable for my needs as I can take it anywhere with me.

Can you power these laptops using a car charger?
 
What are these like on the lap?

I think I'm going to buy one to replace my desktop but I don't have it on a table, I sit on the couch with my laptop on my lap (such a novel concept!) and I was wondering if any of the following will happen:

1) My feet will turn black from lack of blood supply
2) The skin will be peeled from my legs due to searing heat.

Any advice appreciated :)

Providing the inverter is capable of delivering at least 250w you should be fine (300w is the next up from 150w, usually)

They are not really usable/comfotable on the lap for long periods. The 8800gtx's do not downclock on the desktop like other mobile gpu's so even at idle they vent a furious draft of 50-65c heat. The base also has 3 large fans which can be restricted in on your lap.

That said, once you get used to the mass of the machine and work out how to sit with the laptop placed so the vents aren't blocked (quite easy) it doesn't become a problem.

Though here's some food for thought, my kitchen table is an inch thick of solid marble and after 3/4 of an hour the area behind the vents on both sides of the table and nearby were very hot. :D:eek:
 
Well I ordered one anyways! Spoke to our account manager today and he knocked £400 off so I managed to snag one for £1500. Delivery in about a fortnight :D
 
I just got one off del outlet. t9300, 8800gtx, 4gb ram, vista ulti, 2x200gb drives all for £1310 inc vat/del etc. Just ordered a x9000extreme off THE 'auction' site, so will be a fast machine.

Don't care if it's not new, saved me a lot of cash, and should be as good as new.

To say im chuffed is an understatement. Ordered wed, sent today. Sadly it had to go to my parents in UK, so wont have it here til they come w/e 25th july.

Wow! x9000 have come down a lot since I last looked.

Will you be fitting the CPU yourself?

I have a x7900 atm but I might stick a x9000 in there some time in the future:)(Need more power for PS2 emulation)

Yeah I thought the same about prices, X9000 seem to be pretty cheap, compared to what Dell charge.

Roll on july 25th....
 
Well the final total for mine with a T9300 and SLI 8800's was... a shade under £1300 from an RRP of £1900 :D

It pays off having a bit of banter with your account manager. :)

All depends if they overclock aswell as the 8800m GTX:D

Depends how much more heat the extra SP's put out.

Mine manages 750mhz/950mhz with a slight voltage bump(+1.0v) or 700/950 @ 0.5v increase and barely effects temperature at load:)

Still has more in it aswell...1.15v I think I could hit 800mhz core:eek:
 
Nice overclock there sniper :D
I've replaced the thermal compound/pads on mine and at +0.5v run at 720/990 which I'm more than happy with. Could go with more voltage but it already runs everything you throw at it, even at 1920x1200!
